In the AAA phase of the Rule 5 draft, the Cardinals select LHP Matt Meyer from the Cleveland organization.
He bounced across 3 levels in 2009, getting as high as AAA.
He has a career 9.7 K/9 rate and 4.9 BB/9 rate in the minors.
Here’s a scouting report on him from Indians Prospect Insider.
Meyer throws from a sidearm three-quarters arm slot with a fastball that has good tailing action and consistently sits at 91-92 MPH topping out as high as 93 MPH. He complements it with a deceptive slider that he has tightened up to where it is more of a power slider sitting in the 81-84 MPH range. His slider is the pitch he has the most confidence in and will throw in any count, and when he needs to reach back for a big pitch or throw a quality strike, the slider more times than not is what he relies on. In his short minor league career he has shown the ability to pile up strikeouts (career 10.2 K/9), but he also piles up the walks (career 4.9 BB/9). He has had some trouble with right-handers, but is very tough on lefties and it is why many of the Indians top decision-makers project him as a lefty specialist down the road.

I like this pick up. Much better than most AAA phase rule 5 pick ups.
If nothing else, he looks like he works at a fairly quick pace.
But in reality, this guy is probably going to be meat in the show…
He’s not heading to the Show yet, SIU guy (right?). This was in the AAA, not major-league, draft. If he can stick at Memphis for the year, then they get time to turn him into a major leaguer. The LOOGY demographic being what it is, this seems like a reasonable bit of dumpster diving to me.
I like this pick up. High reward, low risk type of guy.
My name is actually Matt Meyer so I think this pickup is awesome!!! Also, nothing wrong with a freebie LOOGY (see Trever Miller).
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a free lefty.
But what I am seeing here from the video is a delivery that is not very deceptive and looks more like the guy is pitching batting practice.
I could be wrong.
and yep… SIU alum
I like this pickup a heck of a lot better than the major league choice.
Lets face it the guy is 6-4 220 and a lefty… he is throwing more than BP here… its just the camera angle…. if you where in the box or had a better camera view it may look a little different. Good size and he will only have to stay at AAA this year. Worth the pickup!!
Here’s a link showing a short BP session of Ben Jukich…

I’m sorry to keep being a pest on this, but the more I look at this guy, the worse he looks.
Last year he was a 24 year old in AA, and he had nearly a walk an inning… plus opp hit .303 against him.
Again, this in no big deal, since the cards gave nothing to get him… I’m just saying that I don’t think this guy will be a big leaguer
Talking about the rule 5 draft….how long does a player have once he is signed before the rule 5 applies. I know that Blake king was drafted in 2005, but did not sign until 2006 after playing one year in junior college. He was 18 when drafted but 19 when signed. When will the rule 5 apply to him? Another question is that he was drafted in the 44th round, but turned down the cardinals offer and played one in in junior college where he led the nation in strikeouts. He was drafted under the “draft and follow” label and signed before the cardinals had to use another draft choice to get Blake signed. Why is Blake said to be a 44th round draft selection when he was paid closer to 4th round money?
Can’t answer all your Q’s but King will be rule 5 eligible next year if not on the 40 man roster.
blake is said to be a 44th round selection because … that’s when he was selected. They don’t re-org the draft based on bonus paid. If they did, STL would not have a “first round selection” in most drafts.
