After such a good article on Mike Parisi’s stuff, it was inevitable that something would befall Parisi and it did as the hated Cubs selected Parisi in the first round of the Rule 5 draft.

Now, just as a refresher, Mike has to stay on the Cubs 25 man major league roster all season or he will be sold back to the Cardinals for $25,000.

I thought they bought it for $50,000, and if they have to give him back for $25,000? Not 5,000

Clark, he probably means 5,000 euros, which now approximates $50,000.

  3. MLB.com has him going to the White Sox, not Cubs.

    Dunno…

Must be an error, steve. The draft slot (between Milwaukee and Tampa Bay) is the one occupied by the Cubs. The White Sox drafted (or would have, if they’d picked anyone — they passed in the first round) before Milwaukee, not after.

I’m not unhappy about this. It eliminates the chance that LaDuncan will do something stupid with Parisi based on the fact that he has “major-league experience.” And a Cubs roster that includes Parisi is probably worse than one without him.

  5. Thanks for the clarification Gruntosaurus.

Incidentally, I note with amusement that the Yankees lost guys in the Rule 5 named Kroenke and Texeira. Wonder if somebody decided the Yankees don’t know how to spell, and thought they were getting Greinke and Teixeira instead?…

So much for my idea of a platoon 5th starter of Parisi/Garcia.

Someone on a message board I frequent (birdsonthebat, poster s.f.) pointed out that since the Cards already outrighted Parisi off the 40-man in 2008 and he passed through waivers, that if the Cubs don’t keep he would become a free agent (so long as other Rule V stips are met).
