I think the cardinals did rather well considering where they were picking most of those years.

Also, to really judge Lunhow you have to look at the 5 years leading up to him being put in charge. I am a huge Jockety fan, but to look at our system those last years and not admit there was a problem was inexcusable. Heck, there was one year where nobody in the first 15 rounds made it to the majors…And that was brad Thompson.

Great piece – it’s amazing the Astros didn’t have a pick til the 3rd and then didn’t sign that or their 4th round pick. Just another reminder that we are fortunate to support the Cards

It’ll be interesting to revisit these grades a few years from now. My feeling is that it’s hard to judge a baseball draft that happened two years ago.

@A1R3Z: I think it's the job of the scouting director to handle the draft, although I'm sure Jocketty has some input and I'm sure he and his assistants handle the negotiations after the player's been picked. At least that's my assumption. The Lee and Williams signings were both pretty terrible.The Astros have really sunk themselves. They did hire a new scouting director, and their last couple of drafts have been better. Their farm system is still terrible, but they'll probably be getting some really high picks over the next few years, as bad as I think they'll be.

I had no idea that the Carlos Lee signing screwed the Astros as much as it did. 111th highest pick? Ouch!

Very interesting read! I always thought we were around average-ish when it came to drafting – not terrible, but not flashy… just solid. I didn’t realize the Reds were as good at it as they were.

I believe 2008 was Jocketty’s first year at the helm of the good ship Redlegs? Did he participate in that draft? Given the… kerfuffle that went on here, I’d be interested to see the NL Central grades for 2009.
