The Cardinals’ minor league pitchers are taking a while to get started this spring. The clubs all fall to bad pitching though the Springfield offense shows some life.

Tommy Pham didn’t talk to you today. You hope he’s just hanging out with his other friends.

Memphis 1, Buffalo 7

  • The Cardinals pitchers allowed 11 hits and walked 5 batters. They only struck out 2. Charlie Zink allowed 1 ER in his two innings of work.
  • Memphis tossed 4 left handed pitchers at Buffalo: Ryan Kulik 2IP, 1ER; Nick Additon 2IP, 2ER; Justin Fiske 1IP, 2 ER; Tyler Norrick 2IP, 1 ER. For the most part those pitchers all have average or below average velocity with Norrick being the exception. Buffalo apparently likes soft-tossing lefties.
  • Mark Hamilton was 3-for-4.
  • Lost Boy Bryan Anderson singled and walked.
  • Mike Folli tripled.
  • Amaury Cazana Marti and Shane Robinson singled.

Springfield 6, Binghamton 12

  • Brian Broderick was tagged for 4 ER in 2 IP. Broderick survived by keeping the ball in the park last year and not walking anyone. He lacks strikeout stuff so he’s likely in for a rough go of it at the upper levels of the minors.
  • David Kopp allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings of work. He struck out 1 and allowed an ER.
  • Casey Mulligan failed to record an out, allowed 5 runners to reach base and was done no favors by teammates getting saddled with 5 ER. Keith Law has commented previously that Mulligan is a sleeper for becoming a decent reliever in the majors in the near future primarily due to his above average changeup.
  • Adam Reifer posted straight 1′s allowing a hit, walk and ER in an inning of work while striking out 1.
  • Blake King was perfect for an inning needing just 6 pitches.
  • Curt Smith was 2-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs.
  • Aaron Luna and Pete Kozma(naut) both had two hits.
  • Adron Chambers singled and was HBP. He also stole a base.

Palm Beach 2, St. Lucie 9

Quad Cities 4, Savannah 13

  • Joe Kelly struck out 3 in two innings of work. He allowed two hits and 1 unearned run. Kelly was selected 98th overall in the 3rd round of last year’s draft. (He and Cliff Lee probably hang out at the club with Billy Joel.)
  • Anthony Ferrara was roughed up for 4 unearned runs recording 5 outs. He allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.
  • Hector Hernandez was tagged for 5 ER in 1 inning.
  • Andres Rosales walked two and struck out 2 in an inning of work.
  • Matt Adams was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
  • Michael Swinson walked and went yard.
  • Niko Vasquez singled and recorded 3 RBIs.

Pham got hurt and taken out early.

I am glad that Blake King bounced back from his last outing. I was at the spring training games last week and watched King pitch his first game with some bad luck. The pitcher in front of King was hit by a pitch and taken out, and King had little time to warm up, and then he came in and with two outs got the batter to hit a ground ball to the shortstop which was then thrown into the dirt for an error. In the same inning there was another error. King had 2 full counts and the pitches looked awfully close to strikes to me. I hope King continues to throw strikes because he is extremely hard to hit with any power.

What should we expect out of Adron Chambers? He seems like an interesting guy to keep an eye on this year. Any good comparisons?

I agree that sometimes the results posted are not from those who have watched. I watched all pitchers yesterday AA and a few AAA and some got some bad breaks from their defense, but that works both ways for all teams. That’s the way it is, however what I have learned is that no matter what the circumstances there are no excuses.

The one thing is that this is practice, should get better as things progress and for the younger guys drafted last season, they had NO fall instruction, their being instructed now and many pitchers are making adjustments to their mechanics. Scores mean nothing.

The sad part is that there are too many to fill roster spots (especially after the AAA guys come back) in a few short weeks lots of guys will not make cuts and be released and there is not enough room for everyone to move up after putting in their time at lower level for a whole season.
