I’m pleased to tell you that Jeff Roman and Hardcore Legend are going to be back this year to bring you DFRs on Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday, respectively. It’s a huge undertaking to compile these during the regular season on a daily basis but it’s a task we undertake with love — or the robotic equivalent of that emotion. So a preemptive thank you to the both of them.

Pitching troubles continue to plague the system this spring as the teams go 1-and-4.

Memphis 5, New Orleans 7

  • Brandon Dickson was hit hard for 5 ER in 2 innings of work. He walked 2 and allowed 5 hits.
  • Lefty Brad Furnish struck out 2 in 2.1 scoreless frames allowing 1 hit.
  • Richard Castillo pitched two perfect frames with just 14 pitches. Castillo, a righthander with average velocity, is one of the most prominent Latin American prospects in the Cardinals’ system.
  • Amaury Cazana Marti was 2-for-4.
  • Steve Hill was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Mark Shorey doubled. I’m somewhat at a loss as to what the organization’s plans are for Shorey. He’s received over 400 PAs in 2007 & 2008 (and hit for a good ~.360 wOBA) but played more of a OF utility role in 2009. He seems to be a role player at a time when there are too many of those in the high minors of the system.
  • Daryl Jones, Bryan Anderson and Donovan Solano all singled.

Springfield 12, Jacksonville 11

  • Arquimedes Nieto retired just two batters allowing 5 hits and 3 ER.
  • Yoffri Martinez struck out 5 in 3.1IP. He allowed 4 hits for 3 runs (2 earned).
  • Adam Veres was tagged for 4 ER in in 2 innings. He walked 1 with 5 hits striking out 2.
  • Matt Frevert picked up the save with a called third strike to cap a perfect frame.
  • Andrew Brown had 3 doubles.
  • Chris Swauger tripled and homered.
  • Oliver Marmol was 2-for-3 with a walk. 2009 was Marmol’s first season with an OPS over .600. His fielding at shortstop, though good, isn’t good enough to get him to the bigs with that kind of hitting.
  • Curt Smith singled and tripled.
  • Franciso Rivera had two hits including a double. He also walked.
  • Charlie Cutler doubled and walked.
  • Pete Komza and Blake Murphey both singled and walked. Kozma also made a nice defensive play deep in the hole to prevent a runner scoring from third.

Palm Beach 5, Jupiter 11

Quad Cities #1 2, Greensboro 10

  • Chris Notti was roughed up for 6 ER in 1.2 innings.
  • Deryk Hooker struck out 2 in 2 IP. He allowed 3 hits and 1 ER. Hooker remains on the radar in large part due to his rookie ball work where he struck out over 12 per 9 IP.
  • A superb outing for Tyler Lavigne who recorded 6 outs: 5 groundouts and 1 strikeout.
  • Michael Swinson was 2-for-4.
  • Travis Mitchell and CJ BEATTY both had an RBI double.
  • Ryan Jackson had a pair of singles.
  • Yorbel Alcala was 2-for-2.

Quad Cities #2 4, Marlins #5 6

  • Patrick Daughty walked 1 and allowed an unearned run in an inning of work.
  • Reynier Gonzalez, who has been in rookie ball for 3 seasons now, tossed two scoreless innings allowing a pair of hits.
  • Randy Santos allowed 2 ER in 1.2 innings, Kyle Heim 1 ER in 1.1 innings and Kevin Butler 2 ER in 1.1 innings.
  • Jason Novak retired 5 allowing 1 hit.
  • Edgar Lara was 3-for-5 with a double.
  • Romulo Ruiz was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Hector Alvarez was 2-for-4.

When do you think Pete Kozma will be in the majors?

  6. BigRob says:

tnek5- i’d say the earliest kozma makes the show would be 2012. he’s been rushed through the system and needs some time to catch up. He will probably spend the entire year at AA Springfield then next year, assuming he plays well, will spend majority of his season at AAA Memphis.

A lot of fans are hard on him because he isn’t rick porcello. I don’t think really anybody in the fan base or even organization for that matter are happy that we passed on porcello but our guys in charge obviously felt the bigger need was at SS and porcello was asking for a lot of money. He will be a Jack Wilson type SS which is alright with me. We can bat him 2nd or 8th and get solid D from him. Not a bad guy to have, but probably not what we wanted with a pick near the middle of the 1st round with higher potential guys still on the board.

    @Clark:

    absolutely

I must admit that I am down on him because he is not Porcello, but with that in mind I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Memphis this year because he seems to adjust to the level he left off at and then be moved up to struggle. 2012 sounds reasonable for me.
