Some encouraging pitching for the Memphis squad and signs of life from a couple noteworthy position prospects. . .

And, of course, the spring fascination with Tommy Pham continues.

Kary Booher has the Springfield roster notes — highlights: Daryl Jones, Eduardo Sanchez, Adam Reifer and Pete Kozmanaut.

Memphis 4, New Orleans 6

  • Lance Lynn allowed 6 ER on 9 hits. He struck out 5 and walked no one. Without knowing the groundball rate, I still find this to be a largely encouraging outing for Lynn. He’ll give up hits in bunches at times but his livelihood is dependent on his command and his ability to keep hits in the park.
  • Adam Reifer struck out 1 in 1 inning of work. No, I don’t expect to see him in Memphis this year. He’s got a live arm but there are too many relievers bunched up at the top for someone who didn’t have a great season in A+ ball last year.
  • Eduardo Sanchez allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in his inning of work.
  • Pete Parise and Blake King each threw a perfect frame striking out 1.
  • Ruben Gotay was 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Tyler Greene doubled.
  • Amaury Cazana Marti singled (mightily).

Springfield 7, Jacksonville 4

  • Nick Additon had an excellent outing striking out 6 in 5 IP. He walked no one and allowed 2 ER on 4 hits.
  • David Kopp struck out 3 in 2 innings of work. He allowed 2 hits and 1 ER.
  • Adron Chambers had three hits including a triple.
  • Daryl Jones went yard. (A few more of these please.)
  • Andrew Brown had a pair of hits including a HR.
  • Pete Kozma(naut) doubled and tripled.

    Anyone else think that if DJ Tools, has a re-breakout year, at least by June, that the Cardinals are going to be shipping him out to San Diego for Heath Bell, or some other team looking to extort another team for their best relief pitcher?

    Big league bullpen looks, well it doesn’t look good.

    Looks like Mulligan will be back at Palm Beach. Thought for sure AA and when that roster didn’t list him hoped for Memphis.

  3. Franklin says:

    Despite the persistence of those who know better that Nick Additon is a “non-prospect” I can’t help but hold out hope for the guy. Could someone throw out a couple of minimal stuff, odds-defying comps that we can latch on to? That, or mercilessly crush all hope with some realism? Is there any projection left in his 6’3″ 170lb frame?

  4. Big Rob says:

    When I think of Nick Additon, I think of Bud Smith. Niether are very big guys, niether have great stuff, but both got a lot of outs. Could be interesting. If I recall correctly, Bud dominated minor league hitters.

    I too felt like Mulligan would be assigned to AA…..he will be there soon. I am not sure why Lance Lynn was largely encouraging to you when he gave up 6 ER’s on 9 hits…..I would expect that was his worst outing all spring. I know that Lance is one of the best pitchers in the Cardinal organization, and I am quite sure that he will have a stellar year, but not yesterday. I still feel like the break out years will come from King, Mulligan. Cutler and Ottavino. Cutler, King and Ottavino had outstanding springs and Mulligan will follow suit very soon.

  6. pitch and hit says:

    Addition is good, young, I believe he has the abiltity to advance, most likely his best chance might be as a reliever someday.

    A big part of a relievers job is to hold the score and not advance any runners to score or produce walks in the few they face. That is what has to happen to have a breakout year. There are only a few relievers in most systems that will ever make any ML roster. Starters not finding a place on a MLB roster become the relief guys.

  7. azruavatar says:

    @kelley: I’m less concerned about the # of hits Lynn gives up than what his command looks like.

  8. pitch and hit says:

    @azruavatar:

    I am with you on this one, he walked no one, which means he has command.

  9. Gruntosaurus says:

    @Big Rob: Of course, Bud Smith also had one of the nastiest changeups around, at least until he got broken. How’s Additon’s off-speed stuff? I’ve never seen him pitch.

  10. Franklin says:

    @pitch and hit:

    So I guess this is true of a Brad Thompsonesque long reliever (which sounds dreadfully realistic), but I’m wondering if Additon doesn’t have a little more upside. Lazily looking at the numbers it’s not hard to see a mid-rotation candidate clawing his way through the ranks, but I really want to hear more from those who’ve seen his stuff and can dispell any notion of a good control okay/egh stuff starter made big. Could he learn a new pitch or gain something on his fast stuff? Or, does his increased walk rate in AA only back the idea that his lack of “stuff” forced him to pitch around the higher level of competition?

  11. pitch and hit says:

    @Franklin:

    As I stated, he is young, so he does show projection, and the best place for him is working with Denis Martinez in Springfield. The Texas League seperates those pitchers that can and from those that can’t, will be interesting to watch him mature and grow.

  12. Franklin says:

    @pitch and hit:

    That’s a good point. It’ll be interesting to see if those extra walks catch up to him in a full Texas League season. Surprisingly, his H/9 hasn’t been jumping up with each promotion. I’m looking forward to how both he and Castillo handle the transition.

  13. cariocacardinal says:

    looks like you are going to have to wait on Castillo. the resurgence of Daley and Garceau has left Castillo with out a starting spot in Springfield and it looks like he’ll start the year in PB again.
