The farm system went 2-2 and Palm Beach played a team named St. Lucie, who is abbreviated STL. Boy, was that confusing.
On your mark, wait for it… go!
- Evan MacLane pitched 7 strong innings striking out 4 and walking none, allowing 1 earned run and 8 hits.
- Fernando Salas pitched a shutout inning.
- Pete Parise tried to give the game away by giving up 4 runs in the 9th, but he was able to shut the door to preserve the win.
- Amaury Cazana went 3-4 with 3 singles because the umpire didn’t see the ball go all the way around the world before landing in front of the left fielder, so he had to call them singles.
- Ruben Gotay was also 3-4, but had an actual double and HR.
- Tyler Henley continued his torrid start with 2 doubles.
- Tyler Greene had 2 hits, but also 2 errors.
- Jon Jay had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
- Shaun Garceau left after 5 and 2/3 after giving up 3 runs but striking out 4 and walking 2.
- Chuckie Fick finished up the last 2 and 1/3 allowing 1 run and striking out 5 while walking none.
- Mike Folli was the only guy with 2 hits.
- Pete Kozma, James Rapoport and Colt Sedbrook each had a double.
- Arquimedes Nieto needed more than his Claw to defend his port city today as he gave up 4 runs over 4 innings, but he did strike out 4 and only walk 2. So, there’s that.
- Kevin Thomas gave up 3 runs in his 1 inning.
- Joel Pichardo gave up 2 runs in his inning – no Ks, no walks.
- Ramon Delgado struck out 1 in his shutout inning.
- Casey Mulligan struck out the side in his no-hit inning.
- Matt Carpenter was 2-3 with a double and a walk.
- Tony Cruz was 2-5 with a double and 2 RBIs.
- Jose Garcia was 2-5 with an RBI.
- Tommy Pham was 1-3 with 2 walks and a stolen base.
- Deryk Hooker continued the QC pitching dominance *knocks on wood* by allowing 1 run over 3 innings, striking out 5 and walking 1.
- Scott Schneider one upped Hooker with 5 innings, no runs and 5 strikeouts to 0 walks.
- LaCurtis Mayes struck out 2 and walked 1 in the final 2 innings for the win.
- Jason Stidham transported a 3-3 and a double, walk and 2 stolen bases.
- Devin Shepard was 2-4 with both QCs RBIs.
- Robert Stock was 0-2, but walked twice. He also allowed 2 stolen bases, but he caught one base stealer.

Hooker once again tantalizes us with his talent. But will the Cardinals ever be able to benefit from that talent.
I think its time to take the kid gloves off. He isn’t a kid anymore, and I want to see what he can do over a full minor league season.
I am so pumped about Quad Cities pitching talent…..They have 3 STUDS! Miller, Hooker and Schneider. Schneider has been the best pitcher in our system since he was moved to QC last night. Completely dominant.
Also why is Mulligan back down at Palm Beach? Wasn’t he in Springfield last year?
@Andrew:
Don’t forget about Joe Kelly, who only allowed 1 hit in 5 scoreless innings last night.
Mulligan split last season between Palm Beach and Springfield (he appeared in 15 games for 20 innings in the latter). He was promoted to Springfield in early August when Salas was promoted to Memphis. Not sure why he’s starting the season in Palm Beach, but Springfield does seem to be pitching-heavy right now.
Does anyone know when fangraphs will start showing 2010 stats?
Mulligan started in QC last year when he should have started in PB. Not sure why they keep holding him back. None the less he jumped 2 levels during the year last year and should be able to do so again.
Folli and Fick have been two surprise standouts early for Springfield.
Ryan Jackson hit in his 4th straight game last night. However even if he hits .280 he wont OPS .700 unless he significantly ups his walk rate. The guy has no power. I dont see him as anymore than a reserve at best even if he has GG caliber defense and even making it as a bench player seems unlikely. I just cant see why some people are so high on him.
Tommy Pham-tastic with 2 walks. Swoon!
Wehere can you find early season stats. Fangraphs hasn’t updated and I was looking to see Stock’s walk total. I get the feeling that he is getting a lot of walks to start but want to see if there were any advanced stats available.
@BigJawnMize:
Minor league Splits has it:

Kozmanaut finally finding his stroke? I feel like i see his name every morning when i check the DFR.
@go birds – with xbhs no less… a glimmer of hope?
Is anyone else going to be disappointed if Cazana makes the majors and he turns out to be an actual human?
Does MinorLeagueSplits not show RBI’s???
“Infielder Mike Folli, starting at third, had two of Springfield’s five hits in a 4-2 loss Tuesday. Folli is hitting .462 to start the season. Folli was one of the young guys who arrived in spring training early, well before the start of minor-league camp, and was rewarded for the early arrival with some cage time with Cardinals’ hitting coach Mark McGwire. Folli is also the nephew and godson of Cardinals’ trainer Barry Weinberg, who helped setup Folli with McGwire.”

I see another logjam @ 3B in our future if Matt Carpenter keeps hitting. Between 3B & SS, we have Carpenter, Jackson, Kozma, Greene, Freese, and Ryan who are all players with some upside. I could see Green or Kozma being moved to 3B if Ryan can play with some consistancy and lock up the SS position for the big club. Of course if Freese plays well… Just move em to the outfield. Its been the “Cardinal Way” the last few years.
The system really has some nice position players with some upside. I hope they go pitching heavy this year in the draft.
Carpenter doesn’t excite me yet. He has always been old for his league. If he OPS’s .850 at PB I’ll pay attention ( Alan Criaig OPs’d .899 there 2 years younger). As mentioned above I’m not big on Jackson either. unless someone steps up unexpectedly, I dont see the depth you do.
Ryan will start his arb years next year. I’d say he’s gone in 2 years no matter what just do to finances (assuming we sign Pujols).
@Cario…Mulligan probably was moved to QC at the beginning of 2009 to work on things. He had just made the conversion to pitcher the season before and while he did all right in PB, he wasn’t lights out. Not sure why he’s back at Palm Beach after finishing last season in Springfield, although there are a number of relievers already in Springfield competing for the closer spot.
Although Matt Carpenter is 24 in Single A, he was just drafted last year and went through three levels in his first pro short season. The Cardinals obviously have him on a fasttrack, and if he performs, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Springfield this season. Oh, and his current OPS is .983. :-)
