Pick any two games and it’s shorter than the Cardinals’ game last night. Memphis will not see any roster moves according to John Marecek of the Big 550.

Memphis 2, Oklahoma City 7

  • Jon Jay was 1-for-4. He’s started the season off with a .362/.412/.596 and the most encouraging sign appears to be the ISO.
  • Daniel Descalso was 2-for-4.
  • Ruben Gotay homered.
  • Brandon Dickson was let down by his defense (Jay 1 error, Kevin Howard 2 errors) allowing 5 runs (2 earned) in 6 innings. He walked 3 was tagged for 5 hits and struck out 3.
  • Tyler Norrick pitched a scoreless inning.
  • Fernando Salas hit a bump in the road. He allowed 2 ER on an 8th inning homerun bringing an end to his scoreless inning streak.
  • Pete Parise pitched a scoreless inning.

Springfield 6, Frisco 4

  • Adron Chambers was 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Scott Gorgen threw 5 innings striking out 4. He allowed 2 walks and 5 hits for 3 runs (1 earned). In 2 starts, he’s struck out 8 and walked 2.
  • Chuckie Fick struck out 2 and allowed 2 hits in his 2 scoreless innings.
  • Blake King pitched a walkless frame striking out 2 and allowing a hit. 6.1 IP in 2010 with 7 Ks and just 2 walks.
  • Adam Reifer picked up the save while allowing 2 hit and 1 run. He struck out 3.

Palm Beach 7, Fort Meyers 2

Quad Cities 9, Wisconsin 5

  • Niko Vasquez was 2-for-4 with a double. If you’d all like to hop off the Tommy Pham Spring Training Bandwagon, the Niko Vasquez Early Hot Start Bandwagon has seating available. He’s hitting .276/.488/.448 to start the year.
  • Ryde Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4 with a double. Billed as a slick glove, light bat shortstop, Jackson is off to a quick start in 33 ABs he’s hitting .333/.450/.394.
  • David Calhoun started the game retiring 5 via strikeout in 4.2 innings. He was tagged for 9 hits and 4 ER.
  • Keep an eye on Joe Kelly who finished off the game allowing 1 ER on 4 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 2 but had 8 of 11 in play outs on the ground. If Kelly’s health can handle starting, he might have the highest ceiling of any starting pitching prospect not named Shelby Miller.

It looks like the Springfield cardinals have “stacked” this team with pitching…..all of the pitchers seem to be poised for a good season….hope it continues and hopefully the hitting gets a little more consistent. Blake King, Gary Daley and Chuckie Fick seem to have figured out their control problems, and I hope that continues. King is un-hittable and will help the bullpen out immensely if he can harness his control.

Jeff Luhnow had a twitter post after Kelly’s first start saying he held mid-90′s velocity through the entire outing. He definitely has a power sinker, but I would like to see a few more swing and misses especially at the low-A level. As long as his arm holds up I do think it is a good idea to have him starting for now. He didn’t get many innings in college and needs the experience.

Has anyone seen Schneider pitch? Haven’t seen any scouting report on him yet. He’s dominated at every level he’s pitched at.

Last year, Niko Vasquez struggled. Now he is on a stronger team, less pressure on him, seeing the Midwest League again. He could improve a lot.

A few years ago Dennis Dove had a power sinker. But he may have been overworked and washed out as a starter. For a guy who did not pitch a lot in college, Kelly has been impressive.

I hope they keep Kelly as a starter….Good starting pitcher prospects are alot harder to develop in my mind than relievers.

I agree Kelly needs to K a few more for me to get excited. If you are throwing mid 90′s and striking out on 3 per 9IP it doesn’t bode well. He’s also not getting large amounts of groundballs.

I notice Tanner Scheppers is pitching relief for Frisco (and pitching well). Have they decided his future is in the bullpen? I thought he had more potential than that.

Whatever happened to Dennis Dove? He had shoulder surgery or something like that right? I don’t see any stats for him past 2007 so I’m wondering why he didn’t try a comeback somewhere.
