How does Chuckie Fick get left out of fast starts, when his stats and some of the other Springfield pitchers are better than Reifers?
    Fick ERA 142, 6+ innings,6hits, 9 k’s whip .95
    Reifer ERA 225, 4 innings, 5hits, 6 k’s, whip 1.25
    Daley ERA 164, whip 118
    Gorgon ERA 180 whip 120
    Am I missing something?

Does anybody know anything about Scott Schneider? I’ve done a little research and found he is from St. Mary’s and we took him in the 20th round after a college career that wasn’t particularly amazing. Any idea on how good his stuff is and what he projects as? All I know is that he has dominated at each level so far in his very young professional career. Might be someone to keep an eye on…

Also, feel free to jump on the Matt Adams bandwagon with me!

  3. siddfynch says:

Any scouting reports on Jorge Rondon? From his Fangraphs page, it appears this is his 3rd year in the organizion (at age 22), and that his K rates have been pretty middling thus far. BA has never listed him among “their” top 30, so I can’t find a summary of what he throws and whether he’s got upside.

    ???

  4. azruavatar says:

@bb2010: Yes, an understanding of what stats are valued measures of pitcher performance. (note: it doesn’t include ERA or WHIP).

  5. Spikez says:

Fick has as many innings As king and more k’s and no walks. He isn’t considered a prospect so his fast start in overlooked as a fluke. Even though he had the best AA performance of any pitcher last year. A small sample size yes, but he has now thrown 30 1/3 innings in AA and given up 5 runs.

  6. azruavatar says:

@Spikez: Because I’m a Blake King supporter? That’s news to me. I’ve been critical of King’s control for years. Fick has had one start. One. Do you see any starters up there with just 1 start? No. It’s really that simple. You guys are making way to big a deal about Fick not being on this list.

  7. Spikez says:

I thought better of you azru, fick is a reliever with 3 appearances, not a starter. . Credit should be given where credit is due, that’s all.

  8. cariocacardinal says:

Fick has 1 start? Ok. In any case Fick is worth watching. He is a ground ball machine (2.39 GO/AO last year and 4.00 so far this year). He hasn’t been projectable to higher levels because he was only striking out about 4.5 per 9. This year his K totals are way up so far. Will that continue? Not sure, but if it does he will become a prospect.

  9. Pat Hardin says:

“This year his k totals are way up so far.”

This year? He’s had one start. “This year” and “totals” should never be used describing a pitcher after one start.

    Talk about going overboard.

  10. cariocacardinal says:

David Shepard is OPSing above 1.000 at QC as well.

  11. jjray says:

The days of small sample size crushes are with us again. Refreshing for the HPGF nation. I aspire to learn enough about advanced stats to be part of the nation.

  12. azruavatar says:

@cariocacardinal: @spikez I stand corrected, he’s been pitching in relief.

Thanks everyone, you’ve nitpicked me to death.

  13. RedC says:

Yes, an understanding of what stats are valued measures of pitcher performance. (note: it doesn’t include ERA or WHIP).

This is a truly dickish response to a reasonable question. Stop acting like an ass, purported robot.

  14. Kazakhstanny Danny says:

I have a hard time understanding why Chuck Fick seems to be blowing up a few skirts around here.

Is his talent really worth these acrimonious exchanges?

  15. Kazakhstanny Danny says:

    @Kazakhstanny Danny:

And by the way, Its 20 freaking 10, and still we have trouble finding scouting reports for prospects like Scott Schneider.

    What gives?

  16. Blaise says:

Let’s all calm down here. There guys at the FR do a smash up job of bringing us tons of useful info about prospects in the Card’s org. Just because someone gives a sample size of of “who’s hot” doesn’t exactly mean he’s neglecting other players on purpose. Take it easy, folks, these guys do this stuff for us for free. Let’s not start name-calling and assassinating people’s characters on this site. After all, we are all on the same team here. Cut it out.

  17. Tim says:

Agreed. I hope this is an anomaly and not a trend.

  18. RydeShelby says:

@Kazakhstanny Danny: Schneider was a two way player as a sophmore and most effective pitcher for St Mary’s in California. Its in a pretty good league, tending toward high ERAs. Short right-hander, control, challenges hitters, variety of pitchers. Seems more promising that Thompson.

  19. RydeShelby says:

@RydeShelby: @RydeShelby: St Mary’s is a Catholic liberal arts college 10 miles east of Oakland, California. Its most notable contribution to MLB is Mark Teahan, from the A’s draft featured in the book Moneyball.

  20. JC says:

Are we seeing Ottavino putting it all together? We all knew he had the tools…but just never had the control or consistency. Would be a nice surprise to see him have a great first month or 2 to give us another legit pitcher to call up if needed.

  21. Andrew says:

Anyone who watched the second half of last year expected this :) I harped on it half the year once I got milb.com. BTW Lance Lynn threw a one hitter tonight…..Little worried about his high walk totals this year.

  22. siddfynch says:

Now that we’ve passed through the Chuckie Fick Firestorm, can anyone address the question about Rondon? Anyone?

  23. Grant says:

FYI: Andrew Brown was named Texas League Offensive Player of the Week for last week.

  24. Cardnerds says:

All of the Cards minor league pitchers should learn the sinker, that is what Duncan is teaching in the show. He loves sinkerball pitchers. Fick is a groundball specialist. Let’s see if the kid keeps it up. I pull for all of them to make it to the show.

  25. spikez says:

    danny, @Kazakhstanny Danny:

Apparently no ones really knows about his talent. He beat out a lot of good arms to make the springfield bullpen and he has pretty good career numbers. So someone in the organization must like him. Yes he has a Low K rate but low BB rate as well. Kyle Lohshe threw 7 innings the other day and struck out 1 batter, no one seemed to mind that a guy who is making 10 milion dollars a year for the cards has a low k rate.

  26. cariocacardinal says:

I’ve always heard that Rondon’s stuff was better than his results. I believe I heard Luhnow mention him as a breakout candidate last year.

Schneider has a LD rate of just 3% so far this year. That’s even lower than Parise’s minor league leading number last year. He had a below average 11.9% last year. (yes, small sample size and probably wont continue but someone else started the post with small sample sizes and for this year its all we’ve got! )

  27. Andrew says:

Saw Rondon pitch last year and wasn’t impressed at all, I don’t think he has big league stuff or command or anything at all.

  28. tom s. says:

i move fick be named “ficky-fick” from henceforth.

    /catch-22

  29. pitch and hit says:

    @Cardnerds:

You got that right, that’s what they want, sink it and produce a soft GB, stay ahead in the count, pound the zone and don’t walk anyone, keep your pitch count down and you will move forward. Strike outs have their value only if the young pitcher doesn’t throw too much to get it. Fick has found the formula, for now, to keep moving forward.
I think Lynn was another one pushed up too quickly, he’s young he should be in AA.

  30. kelley says:

Does anyone have a list of those players that must be placed on the 40 man roster at the end of this season to be protected under the rule 5? It seems to me that there might be too many to protect with the group of young players performing. Am I right?

  31. pitch and hit says:

    @kelley:

Yes you are right there are a lot, and I doubt that many will be protected, unless they have stellar seasons and are true prospects who will make the MLB level or offer valuable trade later on.

  32. cardzfanbub says:

I may the only one who cares, but I like the list of names for Memphis. Three of the four could really use a standout year to bolster/rebolster their prospect standing, if not make a late season appearance (BA’s current stay at STL not withstanding). As for the other of the four (Maclane)…at what point does he get some attention as a AAAA/sixth man/swingman guy? I know he’s old (27), but he put up solid numbers…even decent periph’s…last year. Where can I find his GB rate? I don’t see it on fangraphs, BR or MiLB.

  33. cardzfanbub says:

@azruavatar: Thanks AZ…I can’t say that his GB% was what I hoped it would be…40% for 2009 at Memphis. He’s at 50% this year, and did carry that rate thru high A and AA ball. I’m not beating the Maclane drum really, but you can’t argue with results, and for his Redbird career he’s got some.
