How about that Colby Rasmus fella? Some will tell you it is because he’s adjusted to MLB pitching, some will tell you it is because he’s cut out the White Castle burgers at 2 am, some will tell you it is the 20 lbs he put on in the off-season, while others will say it is because he has a family now. Honestly, though, I tend to think it is his Jedi Training with Darth Firebeard as shown here levitating a ball to the delight of fans.

On to the DFR!

Memphis 6, Iowa 5
Jon Jay had a double, walk and RBI.
Daniel Descalso was 2-for-4 with a 2B and RBI.

Not to be left out, Trey Hearne pitched in with a double and RBI of his own!
Trey Hearne walked 4 and struckout 3 in a 2 ER, 3 H appearance of 4 innings.
Tyler Norrick was awarded the win for 2 IP of 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K work.
Oneli Perez received a hold despite giving up an ER on 2 H, 1 BB and 2 K in 2 IP.
The save went to Fernando Salas, who gave up a hit and struck out 2, throwing 12 of his 18 pitches for strikes.

Quad Cities 10, Beloit 9

Jason Stidham went 3-for-5, transporting home for runs 3 times.
Matthew Adams went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Devin Shepard was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.
Robert Stock didn’t pick the wrong day to stop sniffing glue*. He went 2-for-5 with a RBI.
Edgar Lara had a double.
Shelby Miller was great tonight. He only went 4 innings, but he got 5 groundouts with no outs in the air. He struck out 7, walked 1, gave up 3 hits and 2 ER.
Chris Notti came on in relief and gave up 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB and 2 K in 1.1 IP.
Christopher Corrigan threw a scoreless 1.2 IP, walked 1 and striking out 2.
Jesse Simpson struggled taking the blown save but also getting the win! He gave up 6 H and 3 ER in just 1 IP.
Aaron Terry shut it down for the save with 1 K in the 9th.

*Robert Stock does not sniff glue.

So very nice to see a young pitcher in our system again with a high-upside arm. 21 Ks in 11 IPs is Ankiel-esque, circa 1998.

  2. Andrew says:

This may be unrelated but when is Mark Hamilton coming off the DL? Anyone know what the injury was this time? This may start a disagreement but I think when Hamilton comes back he should take Craigs spot in St. Louis. They could use a good lefthanded hitter off the bench. Craig has nothing left to prove in Memphis I think he needs to work on his swing mechanics as I said last year. He’s wrapping the bat and not able to catch up with any pitcher a decent fastball.

damnit, i should’ve gone to the beloit game.

  4. azruavatar says:

They’re going to move Miller to Palm Beach before I make it up to see him. I just know it.

Is that Steve Phillips’ mistress hanging out with Colby in the Cards dugout?

  6. shaneo69 says:

Looks like Shelby may pitch at Modern Woodmen Park on Sat 5/1…

  7. mizzcards says:

Anyone know what the injury to Kyle Conely is? He was off to a great start in his first 2 games and then went south from there. It looks like he was put on the DL.

  8. Wade says:

    @shaneo69: hahahahahaha

absolutely no reason for Mulligan to be at Palm Beach, He should be in Springfield and Sanchez at Memphis.
What is the word on devin shepard, he is having an excellent start to the season and milb.com it doesn;t show him playing last year. Is that correct?

  11. Andrew says:

I believe he was drafted in 08 in the 7th round, looks like his talent is finally coming together and he’ producing for the first time.

  12. cariocacardinal says:

Shepard didnt play last year for personal reasons. He was a ranked prospect coming out of HS but his power never developed in college.

  13. Andrew says:

Glad he’s finally putting it together.

  14. cariocacardinal says:

I believe Shepard was an 11th round pick not 7th.

  15. tom s. says:

jon jay has a 15-game hitting streak dating back to the beginning of the season going on. i haven’t looked at last season to see how far it goes back there.

  16. Lou Schuler says:

Counting the game 4/22, Shepherd has three outfield assists in a span of 4 or 5 games. I think 2 came from RF and 1 from LF.

I remember when we drafted him in the 11th round in ’08 there was some buzz about how he might be a sleeper. He’s certainly a big kid — he’s listed at 6’3, 225. If he has a legit RF arm, and if his early season hitting isn’t a fluke, he could be one to watch.

There’s no track record. He only played 34 games in the Gulf Coast League in ’08, most at DH. And, as mentioned, he sat out last year for personal reasons.

  17. JBCardsFan says:

Anyone know how many pitches Miller is pitching? Is he on a strict pitch count or something because he does not seem to be pitching deep into games. If he’s pitching around 90 pitches or more, then he’s been very disappointing with his command.

    • azruavatar says:

He’s under a close eye for pitch count and innings total this year. They’re still working the tandem system in QC for their starters with each pitcher looking to throw 3-5 innings.

  18. Pierce says:

Love that picture of McGwire at Chase Field. I went to all 3 games and was able to get one from him during BP of the 3rd.

  19. VolsnCards5 says:

You guys do realize that it wasn’t Robert Stack who said the sniffing glue line right?
