The system goes 2-for-2. Nice pitching performances from familiar faces and a few hot batters keep on hitting.
- Jon Jay was 1-for-4 with a double. With a .346/.441/.559 line, mark me down as surprised.
- Shane Robinson was 3-for-3 with a double.
- Evan MacLane went deep but got hit around for 11 hits over 8 innings. He didn’t walk a batter, struck out 1 and allowed 4 runs.
- Tyler Norrick followed suit allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in 1 inning of work.
- Andrew Brown was 3-for-4.
- Jim Rapoport was 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Daryl Jones went 0-for-4. Jones is off to an unspectacular start despite showing good plate discipline (7Ks, 5 walks) allowing him to get on base at a .360 clip while hitting .250. It’s early but Jones needs to show more production to re-establish himself as a top prospect.
- A tremendous outing for Scott Gorgen who struck out 8 over 7 innings. He walked 2 and allowed 1 run on 4 hits (solo HR). He recorded 7 of 10 outs in play on the ground. Gorgen has a 4:1 K:BB through 3 starts.
- Adam Reifer with a perfect ninth striking out all three batters he faced.
- Tony Cruz was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
- Scott McGregor got beat up for 9 hits in in 3.1 innings. He walked 3 allowing 5 runs (4 earned).
- Palm Beach stranded 8 baserunners on the night. Add to that three errors and it was a night when fundamentals suffered.
- Niko Vasquez was 2-for-3 with a walk. Niko is showing some crazy plate discipline. He has 16 walks against 11 strikeouts. He’s hitting below .250 but has an OBP over .450 — incredible and likely unsustainable.
- Frederick Parejo was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Edgar Lara was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Ryan Jackson was 1-for-3 with a walk. He’s hitting .300 and getting on base over a .400 clip.
- Deryk Hooker struck out 5 in 5 innings allowing 2 hits and 3 walks. He had 6 groundouts against 3 flyouts.
- Scott Schneider finished the game walking 3 and allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run. He struck out 2 while recording 8 of 10 outs on the ground.

What’s everyones thought on Hooker and Schneider moving up to Palm Beach for the second half of the year?
I think Hooker and Miller are going to be moving up to PB very soon. Also of note I noticed that Stuart Pomeranz a form 2nd round pick of the Cards pitching again for Tulsa. It really too bad things went south in his career. The guy put up big numbers at low A ball right after being drafted out of High School with the 65th pick in 2003. Hard to believe the guy is still only 26. Hope he comes back.
I think Mo said they were going to leave Miller at Quad Cities for the year. They wanted to take it very slow with him. Hooker I think they may move up even though he did miss most of last year and hasn’t pitched at this level much.
Here the link to baseball reference regarding Stuart Pomeranz the cardinal former 2nd round pick in 2003 out of HS that is playing for Tulsa now. It looks like he sat out 2008 and then played independent ball in 2009. If I remember right his career was derailed by shoulder problems. I remember both he and Wainwright being in the system together. Both 6-7 220 pds very simular statures. To bad he didn’t have the same success that Waino has had.

@mizzcards: Pomeranz had a shoulder injury, about the time he was ready to move up to AAA.
Pomeranz’s problems weren’t all on the field or the training room if I recall and there were serious questions about his work ethic.
Schneider will move up first. Then, maybe Kelly. They are older with college experience. I say keep them at QC for half season. Wrap up a playoff berth, get several on the all-star team, and then maybe promote a few. Schneider could move up quicker as he had midwest league experience last year.
Schneider only pitched in the last month of the year at QC last year. Hooker pitched about a month in QC at the beginning of last year. I’m for moving Schneider up first to see how his stuff plays at Palm Beach. We already know Kelly, Miller and Hooker have big league potential no need to rush them to the next level and risk stagnation in their development.
@Andrew:
I think you are right on that, maybe called up to Juipter later after the break. There is no rush for him, he’s got some years in front of him and they do get to one place quicker and just wait it out. No need to do that to HS players either. I think the cardinals are done moving players around like chess pieces (unless for injury but everyone seems healthy at THIS moment), if they got good results why should they, and they need to get that 29th place (farm system) off their back. They need ot secure play off spots first half. I think the only guys who will be moved forward are the ones who need consideration for the 5 rule draft, after that pretty nuch should remain stable.
Hooker’s previous QC experience was not last year but at the end of 2008 when he pitched well in 4 games there. Most expected him to start 2009 there but he had his drug suspension, missed the first 50 games, and then was left at Batavia all year.
we really have some hitters in the low minors…hope it translates to the majors eventually(i’m looking at you right field and second base)
@ cariocacardinal
That is really too bad about Pomeranz. It just goes to show that just because the guy has excelent size and was a high pick right out of HS that it doesn’t always work out.
Another former cards draft pick that I was wondering about was Matthew D Lane a 6 ft 8in rhp that was drafted around the same year as well. Looks like he played 2 years and then part of another minor league campaign and then just disappeared in 2007. Any idea what happend to him?

What is the word on roberto de la cruz…is he at extended spring training? when will he make it to quad cities?
He’s got a long ways to go he didnt start hiting till the very end of of GCL last year….I think they will start him at the lowest level to try to build on the success at the end of last year.
Not sure if this means anything or not but I”m watching the Memphis game and the stadium radar gun has him topping out at 92, with a change up thats 79. Lynn doesn’t seem to be trying to throw his hardest. I would be very pleased if that was an accurate gun and he’s now sitting in the low 90′s
@cariocacardinal: The Cards sent him to the Arizona instructional league, after his shoulder operation. Would they do that with someone with a poor attitude? Do you have Pomeranz confused with Chris Lambert?
i’ve heard many times that pomeranz had a bad attitude and poor work ethic…in face, i’ve heard people are worried about his brother in the upcoming draft due to his brother’s attitude issues
Looks like Pomeranz had another good outing for Tulsa against Springfield tonight.

@mizzcards:
He’s been in pro ball since 2003 and going to be 26, pitching against younger players so of course he’s doing well. He should be at the AAA level, wouldn’t you agree.
I would absolutely like to see how Pomeranz would do at AAA. I would even more like to see it at Memphis in the Cards system. Too bad it didn’t work out with him in the system. Would like to see the guy come back from the shoulder injury. What I really liked about him was the numbers he put up at Peoria (A) as a 19 year old in his first full season in the system. The guy is only 25 and doesn’t turn 26 until December 17th. Woldn’t at all be surprised to see him moved up to AAA in the Colorado system this year.
