Quad Cities has a double header to make up yesterday’s rainout. Former Redbird, Jarrett Hoffpauir hit for the cycle out west. Brendan Ryan is going to be jealous of one of the players down on the farm today — care to take a guess which one?

Memphis 0, Oklahoma City 8

  • Amaury Cazana Marti was the only player to collect a hit. He singled twice.
  • Rich Hill had a rough go of it again walking 3 in 5 innings and needing 89 pitches to finish the day out. He was tagged for 5 runs on 4 hits.
  • Matt Scherer struck out 2 in 2 innings allowing a walk and a hit.
  • Tyler Norrick was roughed up for 3 runs recording just 1 out.
  • Mark Shorey, position player, recorded the last two outs of the game.

Springfield 3, Tulsa 4 (11 innings)

  • Adron Chambers was 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Pete Kozma was 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Andrew Brown was 1-for-4 but made that hit count going deep. He walked twice.
  • Aaron Luna was 2-for-4.
  • Curt Smith was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • The SCards left 14 players on base going 1-for-15 with RISP.
  • A nice outing for Shaun Garceau who went 6 scoreless innings striking out 5. He walked 1 and allowed 5 hits.
  • Chuckie Fick took a blown save in the 8th allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits.
  • After regaining the lead in the 9th, Springfield’s Eduardo Sanchez blew the save in the 9th. Sanchez allowed 4 hits in 2 innings of work including a HR.

Palm Beach 10, Fort Myers 3

Quad Cities 3, Peoria 1 (7 innings)

  • Ryde Rodriguez had bases double in the 4th to score all three of the River Bandits runs.
  • Eric Fornataro threw 5 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 walks for 1 unearned run. He kept the ball down recording 8 of 11 outs on the ground and striking out 3 batters.
  • Jesse Simpson struck out 2 and walked 2 in 2 innings.

Quad Cities 1, Peoria 0 (7 innings)

Maybe that Big 3 from the 2007 draft(ie Hooker, Blazek, and Zawacki) iwill finally start to show dividends.

  2. Andrew says:

Worth noting on Rich Hill, He’s a totally different pitcher off the stretch and on the windup. He is virtually unhittable when in the wind up. I watched the game, He didn’t give up a hit threw the first 3 innings I believe. Once he gave up his first hit he went on to walk 3 straight on about 14 pitches. Not sure the issue but he needs to throw strikes off the stretch and he will be fine. He looked like a big leaguer for much of the game today and the rest of it he looked like a little leaguer.

  3. Andrew says:

btw, were is Zawacki now? Haven’t heard about him in awhile?

Jay/Craig from yesterday….shouldn’t the conversaition be Stav/Jay, Or what would make even more sense would be Hamilton when healthy (when is he coming back). He is obviously blocked, but as a slugging lefty pinch hitter would seem more useful than a 6th outfeilder. He could play a game at first every other week or so and provide TLR with a late inning matchup play (this allows Lopez to be used more freely). Maybe he plays well and gets a reputation as a guy who should be starting if it wern’t for Albert, and gains some trade value.
For Jay is it possible they seem him as a cheap long term option in right and don’t want to start his arb clock?? A decent off season move seems to be to trade ludwick and platoon craig and jay in right, making the other first bat off the bench and backup LF. With all the money tied up in SP and Albert and Holliday having a stream of cheap RF (…Craig, Jay, Jones, and on down the line) would allmost be a must. For the next 5 years or so that should be the only available spot in th OF.

  5. Neil T. says:

Jay’s arm wouldn’t play in RF as a regular. Craig’s would be marginal.

  6. riotmute says:

What’s the deal with Matt Carpenter? All this guy does is hit. How is he viewed as a prospect?

  7. kelley says:

Are you still “High” on Shelby Miller and Stock? It seems like there a lot of pitchers starting the year off strong.

  8. Clark says:

The Brendan Ryan question went over my head, about who he is jealous about. Is it Mark Shorey because he pitched? or some other reference?

  9. ArRedbird says:

Zawacki had 2 knee surgeries last August, so he’s still rehabbing.

  10. Felonius_Monk says:

    @kelley:

Kinda hard not to “still” be high on Miller, given his start to the year, isn’t it?

What is it, about 17k in 11 IP?!

  11. Forsch31 says:

@riotmute–Carpenter was drafted last year out of college in the later rounds; right now, he’s hard to judge because he’s at the very beginning of his pro career and he’s old for his level (surprisingly, he’s 24). The Cardinals probably will be aggressive with him (he jumped through the A-level in his short season last year), but it’s probably not wise to consider him a serious prospect until until we see how he performs at Springfield at least.

  12. azruavatar says:

@Clark: Yes. I was referencing the fact that he wanted to pitch in the 20 inning marathon.

  13. azruavatar says:

@riotmute: Matt Carpenter falls into my Steve Hill bucket of prospects with good bats but limited defensive ability. (And no, I don’t think Hill sticks at catcher.)

  14. Travis says:

    @Shane:

I think Stavinoha is one guy that has taken to PH opportunities a bit. I am surprised he isn’t used more frequently.

  15. Andrew says:

Ever since the homerun he tries to hit them every time even if the situation warrants just a single.

  16. Forsch31 says:

@azru–I’ve been wondering about Carpenter’s defensive play. Where were you able to locate reports or defensive metrics for him?

  17. Wade says:

dg just reported Jay is in STL … what’s the guess on the corresponding move? My guess is Craig “to get him regular ABs”

  18. pitch and hit says:

I know someone who has watched Shelby Miller throughout HS that is in the biz of baseball. He is a legit prospect. He is where he should be, for now. He has a lot of things that others don’t have, and one is that he is very young and projectable, the older guys have reached that point by now. Most are probably where they should be, but most likely will never reach as far as Shelby will.

  19. Aaron says:

@azruavatar: I disagree on Carpenter. From all reports I’ve read and what little I’ve been able to actually coax out of anyone, Carpenter is a very good fielder. He’s not much on the power, but has excellent on-base skills, pretty good speed, and a nice glove. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to see him in person yet so I’m just going on hearsay, but I don’t think putting him in the same class as the Steven Hills and Mark Hamiltons of the system is correct.

  20. cariocacardinal says:

Az, let me second the questioning of your comment of Carpenter’s defense. How did you form that opinion — seeing him play, 2nd or 3rd hand account? or an assumption based on the fact that he seems to be able to hit so if he could play defense he would have been drafted sooner?
