Az, let me second the questioning of your comment of Carpenter’s defense. How did you form that opinion — seeing him play, 2nd or 3rd hand account? or an assumption based on the fact that he seems to be able to hit so if he could play defense he would have been drafted sooner?

@azruavatar: I disagree on Carpenter. From all reports I've read and what little I've been able to actually coax out of anyone, Carpenter is a very good fielder. He's not much on the power, but has excellent on-base skills, pretty good speed, and a nice glove. Unfortunately I haven't been able to see him in person yet so I'm just going on hearsay, but I don't think putting him in the same class as the Steven Hills and Mark Hamiltons of the system is correct.

I know someone who has watched Shelby Miller throughout HS that is in the biz of baseball. He is a legit prospect. He is where he should be, for now. He has a lot of things that others don’t have, and one is that he is very young and projectable, the older guys have reached that point by now. Most are probably where they should be, but most likely will never reach as far as Shelby will.

@Shane: I think Stavinoha is one guy that has taken to PH opportunities a bit. I am surprised he isn't used more frequently.

@riotmute: Matt Carpenter falls into my Steve Hill bucket of prospects with good bats but limited defensive ability. (And no, I don't think Hill sticks at catcher.)

@riotmute–Carpenter was drafted last year out of college in the later rounds; right now, he’s hard to judge because he’s at the very beginning of his pro career and he’s old for his level (surprisingly, he’s 24). The Cardinals probably will be aggressive with him (he jumped through the A-level in his short season last year), but it’s probably not wise to consider him a serious prospect until until we see how he performs at Springfield at least.
