The farm went 1-2 with Quad Cities off to my great disappointment.
Follow along with me past the jumpity goodness.
- Adam Ottavino pitched only two innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned). Not sure why he left after only 54 pitches, but reportedly had been experiencing some soreness previous to this start.
- Trey Hearne is still working the kinks out giving up 7 in only 1 inning.
- Rich Rundles, Josh Kinney, Fernando Salas and Matt Scherer made appearances in the blowout.
- Ruben Gotay had 2 hits, one of which was a double, the other a HR.
- Mark Shorey had 3 hits, with a double and 3 RBIs.
- Dan Descalso also added 2 hits with a double.
Springfield 4, North by Northwest Arkansas 6
- Nick Additon gave up 3 runs on 4 walks and 4 strikeouts in 7 innings, taking the loss.
- Tom Eager gave up 3 in 2.
- Adam Reifer struck out 1 and walked 1 in a shutout inning.
- Only 3 hits for Springfield on the night.
- Aaron Luna had a HR and a walk.
- Curt Smith had a double.
- Colt Sedbrook had the other hit.
- Pete Kozma put up the old 0-4 and committed his 7th error.
- Jared Bradford had an interesting night with 5 Ks and 0 walks in 6 innings. But, he also gave up 9 hits and 4 runs…
- Joel Pichardo pitched 2 non-descript innings.
- Matt Frevert and Casey Mulligan both pitched shutout innings with 2 Ks each.
- Domnit Bolivar was 3-5 with a double and a HR.
- Tommy Pham also went yard.
- Richard Racobaldo’s Modern Life had a 3-5 with 2 doubles.

Quad Cities was off.

I still don’t get how Mulligan isn’t in Springfield. It’s not fair to A+ minor league hitters to have to face Mulligan!
Springfields bullpen is stacked and I believe they want Mulligan to get closing experience that he wouldn’t be getting in Springfield.
I additionally have heard they are Making Mulligan throw off speed piches. They don’t want another Perez pr Motte problem where all they throw is fast balls.
Anybody think Descalso might get a shot with the big club this year? He looked good in spring training and has raked so far this year. Couple that with the fact that Skip is in a slump and it makes for an interesting situation.
I for one wouldn’t mind seeing him. He’s been and intriguing prospect since his rise through the ranks last year. I think he could be a solid 2B for the Cards.
Wonder if there are any reports of performances and scores on the intersquad games being played at Extended Spring Training? Would like to know how everyone is doing.
@jws003:
Too early to start worrying about Skip, IMO.
He’s batted over .300 the last two seasons, and right now his BABIP is only .250. That number will eventually start to even out, and when it does, his average will start climbing too.
Plus, Tony loves the guy, so you know his job is pretty safe.
Skip is also striking out more than he has before….so it may be more than just bad luck…though his LD% is in the mid 30s
I think Schumaker should be a trade candidate this year or next year. He will have an increased salary the next two years and is production is likely replaceable by Descalso next year and Lopez this year. I don’t see them trading him this year though.
@jws003: Skip is Tony’s grit boy. He’d have to stink it up for a long time before Descalso gets a shot. If Descalso batted right-handed and played a little SS, he might be in STL right now. But as a left-handed hitting 2B, he’ll only go up to start at 2B this season.
Jones is really sucking it up so far – dissapointing
So…. Tommy….. I know that it’s been awhile… but….
Yea, I’m not too worried about Skip because he’s shown the ability to hit around .300 fairly consistently, and has a been a nice surprise defensively, at least IMO. Thanks for the responses guys, it will be interesting to see what the club decides to do if Descalso continues to hit well.
I see Shelby is scheduled to pitch tonight. Does that put him on rest for the Monday televised game?
I’m not nearly as worried about Schumaker as I am of Brendan Ryan. His swing looks brutal.
Cards just signed Aaron Miles. Guess they aren’t feeling too hot about the middle infield depth, with Schu and Ryan struggling and Flip on the DL.
The real reason for the Miles signing is that they have no confidence in Descalso or Solano or Kozma as possible 18th-inning pitchers. Who can blame them, really?
