All Hail our Rookie of the Year, Jaime Garcia.  Not only is he spectacular at retiring bat swingers but his ability to throw the ball behind his head and to look like a 45 year old man are unparalleled in the sport.

    Anyone know what Gorgen’s deal is this year? Why is he improved? More velocity on the fastball (making his change up even more effective)? A third pitch? Better location? Just better luck?

    I still cant believe his brother lasted until the 16th round and is doing as well as he is (but in relief). Ok, the part I dont (want to) believe is that we didn’t snap him up in the early teens.

    Should be noted that Mateo for QC walked 4 times — the same number he walked in 100 plate appearances last year.

  3. Lou Schuler says:

    Freese took offense at HL prematurely naming Garcia ROY. He’s 3-3 today w. 6 RBI, and just now (top 6) started an inning-ending DP to stop an Atlanta rally.

  4. Grant says:

    @cariocacardinal:
    Gorgen’s BB rate is down from last year, and his K rate is up.

    I think it’s just a matter of him adjusting to the AA level. I don’t get a chance to see any Springfield games, so I don’t know if he’s doing anything different from last season or not. From just looking at the stats, it seems like sharper command has played a big role in his early success this season.

  5. Mark G. says:

    @Lou Schuler: Yep, Cards sticking it to Braves with a mostly Memphis Mafia offense. Good to see Albert take a day off and we still score some runs.

  6. Indiana Cardinal says:

    Shouldn’t it be 2 phor phour??

  7. Mookie says:

    @Grant:
    Went to the game, and it would appear that his off speed stuff is pretty well disguised in his motion. It seemed as though he kept the opposition either way out in front or out of balance. Also, had a nice pick off move that paid off.

  8. Shane says:

    There is Matt Carpenter again. He is getting to be pretty regular on these DFRs. With his size you would think he would be able to develop some power.

  9. Chris says:

    Last year, Gorgen was recovering from shoulder surgery going into spring training, was kept in extended spring and had been a little tentative coming out and throwing. This year he came in healthy and is determined to try to prove that he belongs. That and the fact that he has adjusted to what it takes at this level. Look at his college career and you see improvement every year as he adjusts.
