The low minors win and the high minors lose.

Memphis 4, Nashville 7

  • Lil’ Shane Robinson was 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
  • Daniel Descalso was 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Lance Lynn allowed 4 runs (1 earned) over 5 innings. He was tagged for 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. He had 9 groundballs against 4 flyouts.
  • The Redbird defense turned 4 double plays. Lynn’s rough start continues as he’s now 0-2 with 15 walks in 20 innings.
  • Trey Hearne, pitching in relief, pitched to three batters but failed to get an out.
  • Fernando Salas had a rough night as well allowing 3 hits for 2 runs. He walked 1.

Springfield 5, Tulsa 7

  • Daryl Jones was batting leadoff to try and break him out of the batting funk he’s started out in. He went 1-for-3 with 2 walks.
  • Steve Hill was 2-for-5.
  • Andrew Brown was 2-for-4 with a HR. Brown has 6 homers in ~80 ABs but he’s not hitting for average or walking enough to be a real offensive threat right now.
  • Mike Folli was 2-for-4.
  • Pete Kozmanaut is not fairing well this season. He was 0-for-4. He’s batting under .200 with an OPS under .650.
  • Shaun Garceau pitched 7 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 runs (2 earned). He struck out 5. Kary Booher intimated that Garceau’s outing would have been shorter but the bullpen usage the previous night extended his time on the mound.
  • Ryan Kulik allowed 3 runs in 2 innings. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk and struck out 1.

Palm Beach 7, Jupiter 4

  • Tommy Pham was 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Tony Cruz went deep for his only hit in 4 at bats. He also walked.
  • Jose Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk. Garcia has cooled considerably after a scorching start. In the last 10 games, he’s posted a .480 OPS. His season line stands at .311/.333/.400.
  • Brian Broderick went 6 innings allowing 9 hits and 4 ER. He struck out 6 and walked 0. He had 8 of 12 outs on the ground.
  • Casey Mulligan picked up his 5th save with a scoreless 9th allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 1.

Quad Cities 3, Burlington 2 (10 innings)

  • Jason Stidham was 3-for-4. Stidham is hitting over .300 with an OBP north of .380.
  • Niko Vasquez was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks. He’s getting on base at an insane clip and has walked 20 times against 20 strikeouts. The power isn’t quite what it was when we all fell in love with him but the walk rate is nice.
  • Devin Sheperd was 2-for-4.
  • Ryan Jackson matched Niko’s line.
  • Eric Fornataro went 6 innings allowing 2 hits and 3 walks. He held Burlington scoreless while striking out 4.
  • Chris Corrigan couldn’t retire a batter in the 7th facing 3 and allowing 2 runs.
  • Jesse Simpson pitched the final 4 scoreless, hitless innings allowing 3 walks and striking out 4.

    Booher can say all he wants……to pick on Garceau for striking out on his 4th pro at bat is beyond me. Garceau threw a great game tonite…..88 pitches/64 for strikes……a 12-2 go/ao ratio…no walks and 5k’s….Pick on the offense who has given him no run support so far this year.. ….his one mistake was the HR in the 7th…..the 2 unearned runs in the first came on the error courtesy of our 2007 first rounder at short(once again)…..he throws 95mph and his secondary pitches are filthy….
    As I ommented on Booher’s blog…Give the kid a break and Get Real!!!!!!

    Robert Stock is not hitting.

  3. Andrew says:

    Not many are hitting on QC. Good thing we have big time pitching.

    FREE CASEY MULLIGAN! Just what does he have left to prove at High A? I don’t get it.

  5. Andrew says:

    They are wanting him to get some appearances as a closer….we already have a pretty good closer ahead of him in Springfield.

  6. mizzcards says:

    The main thing on Mulligan is?? Is he using other pitches that a FB to get people out?

    @Gruntosaurus:

    I get it. Casey is a relatively new pitcher, pitching in a league where the strike zone is bigger, the hitters less patient. He should get his work in where he is being successful. I know he did well last year in the time they brought him up, different year, same laegue though, smaller sone and more patient hitters. I said before he will not be a closer unless he develops higher velo, he is destined for a late reliever. He is dominating and he should be, he is repeating PB. Maybe that is something they are working on, higher velo with command. We don’t know that.
    If the springfield bull pen continues to implode, he will come up quicker, that might mean that someone may lose their job, unless the Memphis BP needs someone due to injury, or in the same case, a release. The season is still early. Hang tight, I am sure that he is.

    @mizzcards:

    Good point, what pitches does he use for success? FB, change up, slider cb, anyone know? Perhaps he is still in learning mode for additional pitches.

  9. azruavatar says:

    Mulligan has a very good changeup. This isn’t a Jason Motte instance.

  10. azruavatar says:

    @Bob: I don’t think Kary was “picking” on Garceau. He was simply saying that if there was a fresh bullpen, he would have felt more comfortable pinch hitting if he didn’t need Garceau to eat up some innings. It wasn’t, imo, a criticism of Garceau in any way.

    @azruavatar:

    I agree Booher doesn’t diss players (I have never seen it on BA either) and I understood he meant that on any other day Garceau would have not been stretched, but there was no one to put in. Tough decision for Pop. I also agree, Garceau has not been given much run support this season and as good as Kozma’s swing is, his work at ss isn’t (at times).
    Bull pen had a stellar day, Additon got in a jam, but no run support. I would imagine they are in a slump, once someone hits, they all will, it’s contagious.
    Thanks for that on Mulligan, I wasn’t sure what his best pitch actually was.
