Tomorrow Quad Cities will be on the MLB Network at 11am. Joe Kelly is the scheduled starter. I’ll have some thoughts after the game and hopefully in between innings.

Memphis is once again watered out (be flooding or continued rain) and the organization goes 1-for-2.

Sprignfield 4, Tulsa 8

  • Adron Chambers was 3-for-4 with a walk.
  • Curt Smith was 2-for-5 but both hits crossed the fence.
  • Aaron Luna and Pete Kozma both went 2-for-4.
  • Gary Daley got lit up for 5 runs in 2.2 innings. He surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3.
  • Adam Reifer struggled as well allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in 2 innings.
  • Eduardo Sanchez pitched a scoreless 9th walking 1 and striking out 2. Sanchez is striking out a batter an inning with a 3:1 K:BB ratio.

Palm Beach 4, Jupiter 3

Quad Cities 6, Burlington 8

  • Niko Vasquez was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. He doubled.
  • Frederick Parejo was 0-for-3 but walked twice.
  • Ryde Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Another fine outing from Miller who struck out 7 against 2 walks over 5.1 innings. He allowed 5 hits for 2 ER. You’d like to see him be a bit more difficult to hit given his stuff; opponents are currently batting .275 against him.

Daley has had 2 bad starts in a row, but I think in general has pitched much better this year than most expected and has seemed to solve his control issues. That being said I’m very interested in how Nieto and Castillo from Palm Beach would do in Springfield. Neither seem to have big league fastballs but both have very good breaking stuff. On a side not I hope they keep Joe Kelly as a starter. The consensus is that his arm wont hold up in the bullpen throwing 100 percent because of his body type. If he learns to start and throws at 90 percent that could prevent injury and give us another good potential starter.

  2. pitch and hit says:

There is a HUGE difference between pitching in the FSL, pitchers parks, and the TL, hitters park. It is foolish to move them at this time, they need the work, and to build confidance. I don’t beleive in letting players struggle at the next level as a learning experience.
I don’t understand why you all are in such a hurry to see these guys move up.

  3. Andrew says:

Castillo and Nieto are both young for the league so I don’t necessarily want to see them move up, I’m just interested in how there stuff would hold up against more talented players.

On an interesting note the Palm Beach roster says that Fransicso Samuel is on the MLB 40-man roster. Not sure if this is a mistake on the websites part or what? Anyone have any ideas?

  5. mizzcards says:

I beleive Samuel is on the 40 man. He would have been available to rule 5 otherwise.

  6. Andrew says:

Also shows that Daryl Jones is also on the 40 man roster.

  7. mizzcards says:

They are both on th4e 40 man. They would have been available to the rule 5 draft if they weren’t placed on it.

  8. mizzcards says:

I would be interested to see if Miller is mixing in pitches and what the pitch mix is. If he is using CB, FB, CU? What the speed is on his different pitches?

  9. cariocacardinal says:

Castillo pitched the full year last year in the FSL with fairly good success. If there is a starter opening in Springfield there isno reason not to move him up.

Of note in the Quad Citie’s box score is that Niko played shortstop, made no errors and took part in two double plays. Hope this is a permanent return to SS for him. Even the Niko of our dreams couldn’t hit well enough to be a major league 3b but, as a shortstop, we can still dream.

Are they using the “Piggyback” pitching this year in the lower minors? Mulligan is still pitching great. There seems to be a few pitchers in Quad Cities pitching better than Miller….are the Cardinals that stacked with pitchers? There seems to be a roadblock to keep the young pitchers from moving forward very quickly this year…do you agree? I would like to see Cutler and Stock take it up a notch and start hitting for better results…I had high hopes for both of them this year.

  12. Andrew says:

Easy, Ryan Jackson is the shortshop for QC. Not sure if they have plans to move Niko back to short in the future.

  13. Andrew says:

Yea they are still using the piggyback, in QC. Not sure about PMB. It’s usually better IMO if time is taken with young guys.

  14. db says:

They are using piggyback at QC and will probably use it will the short season teams when they start. the QC manager said that was the best he had seen Shelby look so far this year. Had all of his pitches working.

  15. Liam says:

In “where are they now” news, I see that Jon Bravo and Paul Cruz signed on with the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League. I was looking around to see if Tyler Johnson’s playing anywhere.
