A good organization can fill the holes it needs with cheap, young talent when large contracts to only a handful of players are gobbling up all your resources (**cough**Kyle Lohse**cough**Matt Holliday**cough**).  The Cardinals have been able to fill most of their pen with young talent, as well as 4 position players and 1/5th of their rotation.  This will go a long way to staying in the Pujols sweepstakes this offseason.

Speaking of running an organization, The White Rat used to be the head of SPECTRE, FYI!

On to the DFR….

Memphis 5, Albuquerque 4

  • Reuben Gotay went 2-for-5 with a 2 RBI. Guys like Gotay I always debate about putting in because they aren’t really prospects, but just fill guys that are biding time in the minors.
  • Allen Craig went 2-for-4 with 2 R.
  • Matt Pagnozzi went 2-for-3 with 2 R.
  • Amauri Cazana was 1-for-2 with 2 BB and 2 RBI.
  • Similar to Gotay, the Enigma Evan MacLane went 6 IP scattering 9 H for 3 ER. He did it all with only striking out 1.
  • Matthew Scherer gave up the other ER in the game on 2 H in 1 IP.
  • That ER was actually given up by Josh Kinney, who took a blown save but picked up the win by giving up 2 H and 0 ER in the 8th.
  • Oneli Perez struck out 2 for the save.

Springfield 1, Northwest Arkansas 3

  • Curt Smith and Steve Hill both went 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Andrew Brown picked up the only other hit and the only RBI with a single.
  • Daryl Jones walked twice and stole a base.
  • Fans should have got in line early, Shaun Garceau was handing out free passes. Garceau gave out 9 walks, to be exact, on his way to a loss. He struck out 3, was tagged for 2 hits and 2 ER.
  • Blake King gave up the other ER in the game, pitching 2 innings and striking out 2. One of the 2 hits he surrendered was a HR.
  • Adam Reifer, not to be left out, gave up 2 H as well in his 1 IP. He struck out 1.

9 walks in 5 IP while only surrendering 2 runs is kind of impressive in it’s own way……

@Tackle Box: I was going to say the same thing

  3. Bill says:

Yeah…and the two earned runs came on two wild pitches…go figure….Garceau who I am a big fan of must have been trying something knew yesterday….again no offense behind him….to me it shows the ability to come thru when you obsviously could not find your comfort zone….impressive..

Looks like nice outing today by Walters and Hill at AAA. Is there a miss print in the box score? Hill pitched 2 innings without walking anyone?

    Memphis
Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Walters 6.0 2 1 1 0 9 1 1.50
    Hill, R 2.0 1 1 0 0 3 0 4.74

Wild pitch could have been a result of the spin and movement on the ball at a higher velocity, which some of these guys have. The higher velo guys also come in low, you are going to see higher walks until it all comes together, as I said once, Ottavino is a good example in my opinion anyway.
I was listening to a young ML pitcher today, they asked about stats, and I agree with his reply. You can have what some consider not a real good stat line for a game, but it could have been one of your best games, because of who you faced, the jams you were able to get out of not just how your stuff was or wasn’t working that day.
I agree the offense has to do their job as well.

HL – you might want to check the QC web site. They actually played 2 games yesterday. The first was the continuation of the one fsuspended the day before. That is the one they lost 9-7. In the second game they won 10-9.

  7. HL says:

I thought for sure I selected the second game. I think the other one was the continuation.

Speaking of draft picks? Couldn’t the cards have drafted this guy with one of thier end of 1st round picks? This guy is unbelievable and the Marlins just keep coming up with talented guys like this a 2nd round pick that anyone could have had.

Selected by the Florida Marlins in the 2nd round of the June 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

    @mizzcards:

    NO!!!!!!!

Those guys are just too risky to take a chance on when you have a perfectly good right handed college starter that profiles as a reliever there for the taking.

    @mizzcards:
How many teams have said “If only we had drafted Albert Pujols back in ’99…” over the last 10+ years.

If teams knew Mike Stanton was gonna be this kind of a prospect, he would have been a Top 5 pick. As they say: Hindsight is 20/20.

  11. Bill says:

Check out the score for the Springfield game last night…Additon got lots of run support..they won 16-8. If I was Garceau I start questioning his teammates…he has kept them in the games with a chance to win every time…allowing 1 or 2 runs(except for one bad game) and the offense has been silent for him….giving him a 0-5 record..tough luck…

  12. kelley says:

    Bill:

I agree with you that some nights a pitcher does well and still ends up losing the game….but the important thing is that the coaches see that as well and that is what goes in his daily reports on each player. Sometimes the same thing happens to position players, but these coaches see all of the pluses and minuses and that is what goes in the reports.

  13. mizzcards says:

    Grant & Danny:

I guess you could be right?

    Peter M Kozma
    Clayton G Mortensen

Both were ecxelent picks and have turned out well so far. Just none of them had this guys potential. I think the difference between the Marlins and other organizations when it comes to drafting guys like this is they are willing to take more of a chance on guys and have been very succesful at drafting and devoping players for over 10 years now.
