Just a quick note: Scott Gorgen left the Springfield Game today in the 4th inning with elbow pain.

Shelby Miller ALERT!

On to the DFR!

Springfield 13, Arkansas 2

  • This game went only 5 innings because rain pushed the game back 3 hours and then washed it out afterwards, as the Cardinals scored 13 runs in the 4th and 5th inning combined
  • Adron Chambers went 1-for-4 with 2 R and 1 RBI.
  • The Conquering Hero Aaron Miles went 3-for-4 with a 2B, 2 R and 3 RBI. Get that #12 jersey ready, Rip Rowan.
  • The Flying Dutchman Curt Smith went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
  • Aaron Luna went 2-for-4 with 1 R and 1 RBI.
  • DJ Tools went 1-for-3 with 1 R and 2 RBI.
  • Texas League Player of the (a)Week Pete Kozma went 2-for-3 with 2 R and 1 RBI.
  • Charles Cutler was 2-for-3 with 2 R and 1 RBI.
  • Scott Gorgen, who left after 3.1 IP with injury, was pitching well with 5 K and 1 BB.  He had a no-hit bid, obviously.
  • Thomas Eager certainly was to pick up this win, despite yielding 3 H and 2 ER on 1 BB and 1 K. He gave up a solo shot on the first pitch he threw.

Palm Beach 3, Brevard County 4

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 4

  • Jason Stidham went 1-for-4 with 2B.
  • Matthew Adams went 1-for-4 with a 2B and RBI.
  • C.J. Beatty went 2-for-4.
  • Ivan Castro was the offensive star going 2-for-4 with 2B and 2 RBI.
  • Shelby Miller’s defense let him down a bit, as he went 5 IP giving up 3 H and 2 R (1ER) with 1 BB and 3 K. Another good outing.
  • Justin Smith finished the game off with 3 IP. He walked 3, gave up 3 H, 2 R and 2 ER on 2K.

Tomorrow I’ll be on the road, so your DFR goodness will be at the mercy of the hotel wifi!

    Is there a reason why Quads Cities isn’t represented in this report?

  2. cariocacardinal says:

    I was actually starting to buy into Gorgen’s prospect status. Hope he is well. IF not, I hope they TJ right away rather than mess around with rest.

  3. cariocacardinal says:

    Not saying he’s a better prospect (because I don’t know) but Miller actually got slightly out pitched by Tyler Skaggs who was the #40 overall pick last year, is LH , and nearly a year younger than Miller.

  4. cariocacardinal says:

    TheCardinalNation.com is reporting Shane Robinson has undergone season ending shoulder surgery.

  5. rydeshelby says:

    Beatty did not do much last summer at JC. He’s off to a better start at QC.
    Ingram is establishing himself at the QC level, after a tougher time last summer. Good to see.

  6. Chris says:

    You know what, Gorgen is a prospect if you’ve ever seen him pitch. He isn’t 6′ something, but he has a 1.09 whip, 42 strikeouts in 46 innings, leads the Texas League( a hitters league)with a 1.17 era, wins with 5 and is 3rd with strikeouts. More importantly, he has been very effective and is a gamer who competes every time he goes out. I hope it’s not serious and that he’s back very soon.

  7. Shanky says:

    Nice outing for Miller. I’ll gladly sacrifice some K’s for fewer walks.

  8. dk says:

    @cariocacardinal: so is this officially the end of the road for Sugar Shane and the Cards?

  9. cariocacardinal says:

    @dk:

    Good question. I say it highly increases the chance that they try to pass Robinson through waivers after the season to remove him from the 40 man roster. He still has an option year left so he might get claimed (a la Hoffpauir). If he does clear waivers I’d guess the Cards would keep him around and see how he does next Spring.

      @carioca @dk

      Realistically though, Rapoport is almost identical to Robinson in every facet of the game. They’re redundant players. If the Cardinals lose Shane to another team, they’ve got an in-house replacement.

  10. Gruntosaurus says:

    @Shanky: At this point, that is not a tradeoff I’d want to make. The promising prospects in the lower minors are still the ones who miss bats.

  11. PJ says:

    James Paxton at #25 anyone?

  12. HL says:

    Two weeks ago this site would come up as a mobile site. It never did it last year but did this season. Then, all of a sudden it stopped. What gives?

  13. Andrew says:

    The Cardinals have signed 9 international players and released 9 players. I can’t find out who as its on the pay site. Anyone have this information yet?

  14. cariocacardinal says:

    @azruavatar:

    Az, yes and no. Robinson is the only true CF candidate that bats RH while Rapoport bats LH. With the permanent CF in STL already a LH hitter this lets Robinson possibly bring something to the table that Rapoport (and Chambers) do not. If the Cards determine that Rasmus will always struggle against LH pitching they may be reluctant to let Robinson go just yet. If they determine that a RH hitting Robinson wont hit LH pitching any better than a LH hitting Colby than they wont worry much about parting with him.

  15. pitch and hit says:

    Springfield News Leader reports that recently Gorgen has been relying more and more on a curveball, where he has always been a two pitch pitcher. Could be why he has some elbow issues. I don’t think the elbow issue all of a sudden just popped up, just reached a point where he felt something different happen.
    The milb protocol would be if a slight micro tear to rehab first and then TJ later. They won’t operate unless they have to, or he can seek another opinion.

  16. cariocacardinal says:

    @pitch and hit:

    Agree that is the protocol but is it the best strategy? I’m not sure.

  17. Andrew says:

    Didn’t Gorgen say that this was the first year he’s used a curveball since high school? Probably just soreness because he hasn’t thrown it much since. PJ, I would take Harvey over Paxton at 25 if available. Has Paxton’s season even started yet? Haven’t heard any reports on him. I also think it’s more likely that Paxton falls to 46 and may be available by then.

  18. Forsch31 says:

    @cario–surgery last isn’t just MLB protocol, it’s medical protocol. You don’t open up somebody’s body unless you absolutely have to, and if the tear can be repaired by rehab, then surgery is unnecessary.

    Also, I’m not sure Robinson’s status as a RH CF bat really brings anything to the table. The key for any outfield prospect in the near future is to either be able to play right field everyday or be capable of play all three positions. The LH/RH will sort itself out the bench players they have available at any time, which could include true RF and LF prospects capable of filling in at CF.

  19. jjray says:

    @cariocacardinal: ” Robinson is the only true CF candidate that bats RH” Tony, is that you? Slavish devotion to the lefty-righty matchup is a TLR hallmark so one cannot disagree that “they” may want a right-handed batting CF in Memphis. However, considering the Cards are a right hitting heavy team and Ras might be the best defensive player on the team, I think he needs to play everyday and just learn to adjust to the lefties as he did in the minor leagues. I would have preferred he started over Joe Mather today.

  20. azruavatar says:

    @cariocacardinal: Robinson’s bat doesn’t play at the majors.

  21. Steve Sommer says:

    @Andrew: Don’t know about years past, but he threw it some during the AFL http://www.futureredbirds.net/2009/12/22/scott-gorgen-pitch-fx/

  22. Andrew says:

    He mentioned in a recent interview with Derrick Goold that he had been a 2 pitch pitcher until this year, maybe he started developing it in AFL. Pitching coach Dennis Martinez told him he would need another pitch.

  23. cariocacardinal says:

    @azruavatar:

    Most likely right but I heard the same thing about Stavinoha and for now (this year) he’s holding his own.
