The Embassy Suite’s wifi is not Acer Aspire friendly, for some reason, so this DFR is coming in pieces!

    When does Short Season start? Would love to hear about how EST is going and the 9 international players that the Cardinals just signed, as well as the ones cut to make room for them.

  2. Lou Schuler says:

    Venezuela has already started. The Dominican Summer League starts at the end of May. The others start in mid-June, usually a few days after the draft.

  3. Gruntosaurus says:

    So AA-level batters can’t hit Mulligan, either. Did any readers see him pitch?

    I note that Chambers was “credited” with a CS and two pickoffs. Even allowing for the likelihood that the former was one of the latter, that’s a lot of screwups on the bases. Of course, the positive in that is that he was getting on base to have the opportunity to screw up. Who’s working with these guys to coach baserunning?

  4. Forsch31 says:

    Note that Chambers is a pretty raw baseball player, and basestealers tend to get caught as they’re developing. Lou Brock had a pretty bad SB/CS ratio early in his career (16/7, 24/12) until he started figuring it out. Getting caught stealing and getting picked off in one game is bad, but it’s not surprising.

    @Andrew:

    I wouldn’t be expecting to see the new Latin players making much of an impact this year (or next year). I’m sure most will be at the Gulf Coast League team.

  6. Tackle Box says:

    @Andrew:

    Btw, did you ever find a list of the players signed?

  7. Andrew says:

    No I didn’t it’s insider info on Cardinal Nation Blog as is most minor league stuff. Gotta pay to get into that part of the site.

  8. buckriggs says:

    Players signed are all going to the VSl. Ismael Brito Lhp, Lanier Brito SS, Manuel Marquez SS, Jose Perez Rhp, Douglas Planchart Rhp, Edubray Ramas Rhp, Marlon Sucre OF, Breyvic Valera SS, Kender Villegas Rhp.

  9. pitch and hit says:

    @Gruntosaurus:

    I have seen Mulligan pitch, he has a very nice CB, which gets hitters out, but overall not as electrifying or projectible as the younger Sanchez. He does get hit when he throws the FB. He doesn’t have the power for the upper levels as a true closer, I hope that he learns another pitch for his arsenal. That will make him more valuable.

    Chambers is awesome, I agree a young player trying to figure it all out. Having seen him play for two seasons, he is a fun player to watch.

  10. cariocacardinal says:

    Grabby Hernandez who was the hit of the DSL last year and got lots of pub (even in the PD) didn’t get invited to EST and very likely wont be in the GCL the year. Not sure why. He was a 17 yo SS lat year with a .842 OPS (really high for the DSL)

  11. Andrew says:

    Buckriggs- Do we have a brief describtion of any of these guys? Jem Armchel went 4-5 yesterday. He can be seen on Youtube in a home run derby that Bryce Harper took part in at Tropicana Field,

    Wonder what happened with Hernandez?

  12. Andrew says:

    Buck also who were the 9 released to make way for the 9 signed? That was part of the news story i believe.

  13. buckriggs says:

    Andrew: Alex Castellano OF, Fernando Cedeno Rhp, Osmir Medina SS, Sergio Nieves Rhp, Omar Viloria C, Jose Weffer Lhp from VSL and Keury Herrera Lhp, Santo Sandoval OF, Ramon Urena Rhp from DSL were the cuts. I have no info on the signees other than names & positions.

  14. Andrew says:

    Anyone have any info on Hernandez and why he’s not in EST or going to GCL?

  15. Zach says:

    Palm Beach really looks to have mediocre offensive talent but I look at Quad Cities and love the talent there. Hooker had another terrific start tonight – just a matter of time before he’s promoted

  16. Andrew says:

    Not sure if these rosters are correct but online it shows Hernandez will be back at DSL again. For some reason they have Anthony Ferrara only in Johnson City? Did he really stink it up in EST or something. Needs to see what he can do at QC soon.

  17. Lou Schuler says:

    @Zach: I agree that we have exciting talent at QC, but a lot of those guys are repeating the level. Ingram, Vasquez, Stidham, and Rodriguez all played at least 30 games there in ’09. All those guys are 22 or 21. On top of that, Stock (who’s still just 20), Stidham, and Jackson all played 3 years of Division I college ball.

    That’s not to discount what they’re doing. In the past few years I think the Cards have promoted some guys too aggressively, forcing them to go backwards, so it’s encouraging to see them being more patient with this talented group.

  18. cariocacardinal says:

    @Andrew:

    Andrew, not sure what you are looking at for on line rosters but I can assure you that the short season rosters are anything but decided at this point. They dont even know who they have coming in from draft yet. Most players are simply listed where they finished last year at this point.

    In the case of Hernandez though it is fairly safe to say he will start in the DSL though. As I mentioned above, he was not brought to EST and it is rare that a non-EST player is brought up from the Caribbean leagues to a short season club to start the season. They some times do it mid season but even that is not overly common. As for why he is not at EST is a mystery to me.

  19. Andrew says:

    cario- Your correct I was looking at the 2010 roster matrix but the SS rosters were the rosters from last years team minus who ever has moved to Memphis, Sprignfield, PMB and QC. Guess i’m trying to find out where buck got his info about Grabiel Hernandez not being invted to EST and probably not going to GCL.

  20. Forsch31 says:

    @Lou–Stidham was drafted last year and only played in Quad Cities since June. He’s just nearing a full season there since last year. I wouldn’t call that repeating a level.

  21. cariocacardinal says:

    @Andrew: @Andrew:

    Andrew, actually it was me who brought up that Hernandez wasnt in EST and I got it from Brian Walton’s Roster Matrix at TheCardinalNationBlog.com I also discussed with him (Brian) off line and at the free discussion board at TheCardinalNation.com so I know it is not just a clerical error. Unfortantely he didnt have any insight as to the reasoning either (at least none that he could share publicly). I may send an e-mail to Goold st the PD and see if he can look into it since he wrote a little about Hernandez last year.

    The fact that Hernandez was not going to the GCL is not really a fact as much as a solid assumption on my part since in the past players from the DOminican going to the GCL to start the season have almost always gotten invites to EST.

  22. Andrew says:

    Anything thought he repeats DSL? I know another shortstop signed that year Cesar Valera played in GCL last year and has been in EST. In other news I believe Ty Bighames suspension is over and he’s listed on the QC roster. Also Former prospect Jose Martinez was last seein on FR with an shoulder injury on 4/8 he was at Springfield. Is he still in the organization at one point he was a second baseman of the of the future possibility.

  23. Alex says:

    Maybe Hernandez is in extended spring training. Maybe we just don’t recognize him.

  24. Anderw says:

    He’s not listed as in EST on this site.

  25. cariocacardinal says:

    @Alex:
    Pretty sure the list at TheCardinalNationBlog.com cam from the Cardinals (probably Vuck). It is not a mistake but it is a mystery :)

  26. Andrew says:

    Hope the kid isn’t 30 or something….lol Any idea on where Ferrara could land? SS or is he going to QC? Any updates how which players are doing well in EST.
