I missed the links last week so here’s an overflowing edition of minor links.
Derrick Goold talks with former Memphis Pitching coach and current minor league pitching coordinator, Dyar Miller about the candidates to join the big league club’s rotation. You can scratch everyone not named Adam Ottavino off the cave wall since he’s already drunk from the cup. (LOST reference. Sorry, can’t help myself. Ottavino is, according to sources, slated for St. Louis.)
Shane Robinson had a season ending shoulder injury. We hope Robinson’s surgery and recovery go well.
Marlon Morgan catches up with Jim Rapoport on his callup to AAA.
Joe Kelly talks about his progress on the mound and the transition to starting.
Kary Booher reminds us why we missed him so much when he was away from the News-Leader. He has a 4 page article about the draft prospects in the NL central (watch out for the Reds).
Curt Smith wants to avoid being a free-swinger. That hyphen seems extremely important to the headline.
Some details on Scott Gorgen’s injury. Gorgen was one of my pet pitching prospects featuring a great changeup and an average fastball. With luck, the MRI comes back clean and it’s just some minor hyperextension of the elbow.
Want to pig out on some draft articles:
- ESPN Insiders can find most (all?) of Keith Law’s scouting reports linked to the player’s names here.
- There’s also Baseball America’s rankings of top draft prospects by position.
- MiLB scouting reports with video here.
Andy Seiler has the Cardinals taking Bryce Brentz in his latest mock draft. Again, I’m not enamored of his logic here. The Cardinals often select players with a great plate approach (Brett Wallace, Shane Peterson, Matt Carpenter, Jason Stidham, etc) so I don’t buy the implication that they overlook these types of players and go after “developing bats”. Brentz does fit the toolsy outfielder model though and if the Cardinals think they can develop the rest of his offensive game, they won’t hesitate to take him. I would not be a fan of this pick though.
John Sickels has some notes on Robert Stock.
You can party with Unclebuck44 for the MinorLeagueBall.com mock draft here.
Don’t forget that the draft is June 7th-9th.

Regarding Seilers pick, I read a comment during last years draft that Mo was satistifed with the organizationals depth and that they would now focus on finding high ceiling guys. With the looming contract of Pujols and a good percentage of the team payroll tied up in Holliday and Pujols it makes since thatwe need impact players to fill the roster around them not guys who grade out to be AAAA player ie Peterson, Carpenter and Stidham.
