What a late night for the big club! Offense still is offensive. Unfortunately, there isn’t much help to call on from the farm system. You can’t replace $32 M in payroll in the middle of your order with a fresh to order from Memphis.

Jon Jay, one of his tools not basesliding.

    Gorgon out until August.

Hopefully Parise can get back on track.

    Mulligan with 5 K’s in 2 innings.

Ramon Delgado at PB has a 0.48 ERA and an 18:1 K:BB ratio. Not sure how the Cards are going to find room to promote him, Carpenter, and Frevert — who all need to move up this year.

Ingram OPSing over .900 at QC. This is the 3rd year he has spent time there. Time to move him up as well.

I’m currently working on the rest, will be up by 1CST.

There is word on Twitter that Fernando Salas is with the big league club – if true, I’m very excited. I would assume Boggs will be moved to the rotation and Ottavino stays with Memphis

  4. Jeffery says:

    Springfield made these moves today:

    Kulik to Memphis

    Broderick to Springfield

    Mura to Springfield

    Gorgen DL until August

  5. Andrew says:

I would be really disspointed if this is true. Ottavino deserves his shot. Why throw Boggs in the 5th spot when the reason hes in the location is he usually maxed out at 5 innings. That puts more pressure on the bullpen during his games. Plus Salas doesn’t have the arm to be a long reliever like Boggs is. Color me disspointed.

  6. jack618 says:

What I’ve heard is Salas with the big club, with the corresponding move being Mather to Memphis.

Then Ottavino to start on Saturday for STL, with the corresponding move being Lohse to the DL.

I guess that’s not 100%, but it makes sense.

  7. shaneo69 says:

Salas ahead of Josh Kinney? Interesting. Maybe Ottavino makes one start then goes back down since the Cards have a few off days coming up and may not need a 5th starter.

  8. jjray says:

@jack618: I like this move. We needed another arm in the bullpen after another extra innings affair. Joey Bombs needs to play everyday for a few weeks (and has options). Salas has been nails in Memphis, time to pop his cherry. I’m very much rooting for Ottavino. He could ease our collective Lohse headache by pitching up to his potential out of the gate in the show. Alot to ask but I’m asking anyway. The baseball gods owe us.

  9. Andrew says:

Apparently according to the broadcast today, LaRussa said that Ottavino would make the start saturday if they stay within the organization. That means there are currently trade talks because any signing of someone they obviously can’t be ready to p itch by Saturday.

  10. cariocacardinal says:

Schneider only had 1 fly ball hit against him in 5 innings.

  11. sluhser says:

THIRTEEN ground ball outs for Schneider!!!

  12. Forsch31 says:

With Walters already starting tonight, they obviously don’t want to throw out a rotation with two Memphis starters, not when there’s two guys in the bullpen who could do spot duty (Boggs, who did have a handful of mostly successful starts last year, and McClellan, who Duncan’s been wanting to turn into a starter and would have if not for Garcia).

  13. rydeshelby says:

Ottavino has been working as a starter, unlike Boggs or McClellan. His endurance has been built up. He will start.

  14. mizzcards says:

Ottavino will be starting Saturday the coresponsing move will be either Jon Jay or Joe Mather to Memphis. There will be no trades or signings. All wishful thinking but it will not happen. The organization has too many pitchers that are just waiting for a chance to play for the big club. They will move to 13 pitchers on the roster. The rotation until Penny comes back off the DL will be:

    Starters:
    Wainwright
    Carpenter
    Garcia
    Walters
    Ottavino

    Bull pen:
    Hawksworth
    Boggs
    Motte
    Salas
    McClellan
    Frankilin
    Miller
    Reyes

  15. Andrew says:

I actually think that Salas was called up just as insurance because the bullpen was a little thin. I think he goes down when Ottavino is called up. Ottavino is p h ysically with the team but he currently hasnt been called up. LaRussa said Ottavino gets the ball on Saturday if they stay within the organization. Not sure what the last part means. I don’t think Salas gets any innings with St. Louis unless its in tomorrows game.

  16. dave_barry says:

Not sure if any one has noticed this, a great defensive play by DeJesus.

  17. rydeshelby says:

@Andrew: What TLR means is if the Cards are limited to who they have now, then Ottavino starts. If they sign or trade for a new pitcher, this man will get the start.

  18. Andrew says:

Obviously I know this but it also seems to mean they were working on a trade as they spoke and it woul dhave been with someone who was ready to pitch on Saturday.

  19. Forsch31 says:

    >>>”His endurance has been built up.”

That has little to do with spot starting. McClellan was being tried out as a starter all through spring training, which wasn’t all that long ago, while Boggs has been a starter his entire career until this season, which is only two months old.

Regardless, it appears that Salas was called up only to support the well-used bullpen, and that Ottavino will get the start this Saturday.
