Memphis 6, Alberquerque 16
- Bryan Anderson was 2-for-3 with a walk. Anderson’s showing a bit of pop with 5 HRs in 100 ABs but he’s not reaching base often enough with a .262/.306/.447 line.
- Ruben Gotay picked up a pair of walks. He’s hitting just .269 but has a crazy .397 OBP.
- Ryan Kulik got shelled, unsurprisingly, for 9 runs (7 earned). He walked 4 and allowed 5 hits. Kulik’s a finesse lefty with poor stuff — outings like this aren’t unexpected especially in the thin desert air [edit: tragically, as Mr. Schuler has pointed out below, they were in the humid Memphis air. yowza!].
- Matthew Scherer also got lit up for 5 runs in 2 innings allowing 7 hits.
- Mark Shorey pitched an inning. Memphis is hurting badly for innings right now.
Springfield 12, San Antonio 5
- Adron Chambers was 2-for-4.
- Matt Carpenter was 3-for-5 with a double. Carpenter has kept his high average hitting .362/.429/.464 in Springfield over 69 ABs.
- Andrew Brown was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. Both hits were doubles.
- Pete Kozma and Curt Smith both went 2-for-5.
- Brian Broderick allowed 10 hits in 5 innings for 5 runs (4 earned).
- Blake King pitched two scoreless frames walking 2 and striking out 2.
- Matt Meyer pitched a pair of innings allowing 2 hits.
Palm Beach 6, Lakeland 3
- Jermaine Curtis and Xavier Scruggs both went 2-for-4. Scruggs doubled.
- Alex Castellanos went yard with his lone hit in 4 trips to the plate.
- Oliver Marmol was 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Mark Diapoules pitched 6 strong innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 5 and had 10 of 13 outs in play on groundballs.
- David Carpenter struck out 1 in a perfect 9th.
Quad Cities 12, Burlington 4
- D’Marcus Ingram has come alive in recent days. He went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles. He has a .909 OPS on the season and a 1.112 OPS in the last 10 days.
- Jason Stidham was 3-for-6.
- CJ Beatty was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Ryde Rodriguez and Ryan Jackson were both 2-for-5. Jackson doubled.
- Shelby Miller pitched 2.2 innings striking out 2 and walking 0. He was tagged for 3 hits allowing 2 runs (1 earned). Nothing I’ve seen indicates he was taken out for an injury.
- Justin Smith pitched 4.1 innings striking out 5 and allowing 4 hits for 2 runs (1 earned). He walked 1.

To be honest, I’m not sure what to make of Matt Carpenter. He can hit the ball, but the lack of power makes him hard to pin as a major league third baseman. Haven’t really seen him play defense, but any chance of a move to second base?
Still liking the fact that Miller has got a very good SO/BB ratio. Really a good indicator of his pure stuff IMO.
The thin desert air … of Memphis? Interesting weather report!
@Lou Schuler:
There is a pyramid in Memphis.
@Lou Schuler: Devil! I thought they were in New Mexico.
. . . Holy crap that means they scored those in Memphis humidity. That line looks a lot worse now.
I was at the Bandit game and not sure why Miller was pulled so early, he was in and out of trouble but QC had a big lead. Miller looked shocked when the manager came witht he hook. I was impressed with Novak who pitched the 8th and 9th. He seemed to throw hard. Beatty also looked impressive at the plate. Ingram should have had a triple, but didn’t turn on the jets until he got to 2nd and was thorwn out at third.
I wouldn’t give up on Kulick yet…..he is a bulldog with better than “poor stuff”. It was his first outing in AAA and I am sure he was nervous. It is good to see Reifer and King throwing well and Kosma being more consistent with his hitting. Springfield has a solid team, but they could use their D/L players back.
Brian Walton has revealed the mystery of why Gabrial Hernandez (Dominican SS) is not in EST over at TheCardinalNation.com. It is insider content so I wont reveal too much other than to say he wont be playing anywhere until next year.
Don’t look now, but the kozmanaut may be figuring out AA…in his past 10, he is batting over .400 and OPSing over 1.000…thats still pretty good for a 22 year old
@ Karmaloop,
I would be thrilled if Matt Carpenter could play 2nd base. But there may be a problem with him being 6ft 3in and 200pds. I read a little while back that he had a weight problem in college and actually lost 40 pounds prior to his JR or SR year. Still the bat looks very good…
Cario-Only thing I can think of is age issues and he wasn’t as old as he said he was but that would have voided his contract with the Cardinals which you didn’t mention. That or jail. Can you at least say if he is still in the Cardinal organization?
@Andrew: Andrew, you didn’t know it but that is a trick question! Let’s just say that you wont be seeing “Gabrial Hernandez” playing for anyone. Now if you happen to see a player that looks just like him with a different name than it probably is :) . Not sure if he is with the Cards still or not (I think so but not sure).
Seems like a very intriguing situation may pony up for Cardinal Nation for a month. My guess is he wasn’t 16 and was using someone elses name. I hope he is still in the organization whatever his name was, he’s an exciting prospect.
Just saw that DR signee Eddy Rivera just came off a year long suspension. Not sure what gets you a year coming out of the DR unless it is PED’s. Never heard of the guy though. Cario can you give any hint about him? Wishing we could resign tht pitcher we did but released cause of age a few years ago.
That was Rivera — He’s in the San Diego organization now.
You sure I thought it was Santos Franco that Luhnow was talking so good about. We just signed a guy named Matias who pitched well today in the DSL. Anyone know about this stuff?
Maybe it was both of them?
As far as Matias, Luhnow’s excited — what’s new? He’s a player who had age issue previously with another organization.
Good news on the prospect front. I researched Carlos Matias some and found on a free site that he signed with Boston before but his contract was voided because he lied about his age. He is 18 now, 5’11 and throws mid-90′s which obviously draws comparisons to Pedro Martinez. The Yankees were highly interested in him but we got him. He at DSL went 3 innings with 2 hits and 6k’s. Just found someone new to follow :)
Read about the stuff on Matias on a Yankee’s fan blog..
According to Jorge Arangure Jr the international contact the Yankees were really fawning over the guy….That him good enough for me that we took him away from the yankees.
