The smart people at Project Prospect held their community mock draft. I need few excuses to talk about draft prospects this time of year, so let’s talk about who the pick was for the Cardinals – Kolbrin Vitek, an infielder for Ball State.

As azruavatar reported below, Adam Ottavino will be called up to make a start for the big club, so head to that post for discussion on that move.

QC scored 10 in the 7th after a delayed start to the game, which makes me have to update that game in the morning, but here’s the rest of your Memphis and QC DFR. Palm Beach was rained out and Springfield was off.

Updated with QC Final.

Update II: Nope, probably the Cubs on Saturday.

  • Wednesday @ Padres: Garcia
  • Thursday @ Padres: Walters
  • Friday vs. Cubs: Carpenter (on normal rest)
  • Saturday vs. Cubs: Ottavino (on normal rest)

Update: I’m doing my rotation/schedule math again and it may not be the Cubs. That’s bad on me. Short version – Adam Ottavino will be in the St. Louis rotation.

* * *

We don’t pass it along if we aren’t confident in its veracity. Expect Adam Ottavino to be called up to start next week against the Cubs.

Congrats to Adam who is having a tremendous season this year.  He’s certainly earned this chance with a lot of hard work and great pitching.

The draft is under two weeks away now and the Cardinals are blessed with a plethora of early picks. Specifically they’ll have three top 50 picks in the first round and the supplemental round: #25, #46 and #50.

The Cardinals are a difficult club to make draft predictions about for two reasons: 1) They generally pick late in the draft and 2) they run a tight ship.  While it wasn’t a complete surprise given his talent level and the players still available, the Cardinals’ pick of Shelby Miller was an uncharacteristic selection of a fireballing high school arm. Prior to that they picked the best bat available to them in Brett Wallace, who was an uncharacteristic pick given his poor defense.

I’m disinclined to try and pigeonhole the Cardinals as having a prediliction for a type of player, but if you force me too there are a couple types of players that you should keep an eye on for draft day:

Shelby Miller got blowed up tonight, but I preach patience my brown baggers, no need for worry even though he has an ERA in the mid 5s. His FIP on the year is 2.50 and he has struck out 52 to 14 walks so his peripherals are still very strong. He has a BABIP allowed of .390 so his numbers are due for a bit of regression. I would love to see him mow down the Midwest League, but the kid is still alright.

Memphis is on the West Coast, I will update this in the morning…

(Now updated with Memphis -> The system went 4-0 today! Huzzah!)

After posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio just under 8 in 18 innings, PJ Walters is getting the callup to the big leagues as insurance to hedge the bullpen and rotation against Brad Penny‘s injury and Blake Hawksworth continuing groin issues.

The organization went 2-for-2 on Friday with some big wins and some tight losses.

The Embassy Suite’s wifi is not Acer Aspire friendly, for some reason, so this DFR is coming in pieces!
