Steve Hamel who follows the Connecticut Tigers in the NY Penn league recently asked me some questions regarding players who may be slated for Batavia in 2010.  You can find my answers here.

One of the things that can be a struggle when reading a team specific blog, be it about the minors or majors, is trying to discern relative value. Especially when we lack definitive objective metrics and have highly volatile player projections, it’s dangerously easy to fall into the trap of overrating some of the players you’re watching on a daily basis.

Much like you see at VEB from time to time, my goal during this season is going to be to engage bloggers who follow other teams systems. Today we’ve got Doug Gray who does a tremendous job covering the Reds.  Below are his answers to five questions I posed about the Reds’ minor league system.

You knew it was coming. You were all a twitter counting down the days, hours, minutes, seconds until he made his debut. You told your wife that should the moment come, to excuse you from not being bothered about anything else going on in your life. That moment has arrived.

I have no real reason to think that Kyle Lohse is hurt. The fact that Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan let him pitch deep into a failing outing makes me think that there’s nothing physically wrong with him. He did seem remarkably detached from what he was doing as the game progressed but that’s a very subjective assessment on my part and one that, admittedly, may not be fair.

That said, we’ve seen players hit the DL with what many outside the clubhouse perceive to be phantom illnesses. Whether that’s to let them rest or get some mental things worked out, it’s tacitly accepted among MLB. So if that were the case, who would be the option to come up from Memphis?  This also assumes that the Cardinals wouldn’t want to simply give Kyle McClellan, Mitchell Boggs or Blake Hawksworth a spot start but they seem content with those three in the pen.  On to the stats!

This is Kyle Lohse.  He is not good at hurling the ball towards homeplate in an attempt to flumux the bat swingers.

What we have below is 3 Once and Future (and Current) Redbirds which will likely be considered options to replace the $23 M burden should the team finally make a move either by cutting him (unlikely) or by moving him to the pen (probably also unlikely).

Of course, there are other options.   Which is where you come in.  What do you think is the best option, should the Lohseapaloza come to an end?  One of these 3?  One of the younger starters such as Lynn or Walters? One of the guys trying to restart (or start) their careers like MacLane or Hill?

Ponder that as we move on to the DFR!  Springfield had the night off and the Riverbandits apparently aren’t as adapt with watery conditions as their namesake would have you believe and were thus rained out.

I know I’m late to the show on this band, but since it is music Monday, I’m totally in love with Passion Pit’s Little Secrets. Give it a listen and if you don’t at least tap your foot, I will immediately submit you for a Turing test.

If  you pass the Turing test, let’s compute the DFR.
