The third extra inning game in a row for Quad Cities, plus much more in tonight’s old DFR.

First inning.com is acting foolish tonight and not loading, so you will have to do without any links tonight.

Here’s just a quick reminder about why it is impossible to put too much stock in stats or even names of the players in the DSL and VSL. Last year’s DSL darling, slick fielding shortstop Grabriel Hernandez is not Grabriel Hernandez and was almost 3 years older than he said he was. Now Hernandez is using his real identity, Ronny Gil and is 20 years old. He’s on the restricted list in the DSL and we will need to check back with him next year. This is obviously not breaking news, as it has been at the TheCardinalNation.com and elsewhere, but just another cautionary tale to add to the pile of cautionary tales over there in the corner.

Additionally, the Cards signed Renyel Pinto to fill the role of lefthander out of the bullpen for Memphis after Rich Hill’s release. He does strike out almost a batter an inning for his career, but he walks almost 6 batters per 9 innings.

Memphis and Quad Cities are updated with their late night finishes.

Let’s rock.

In this episode our intrepid robot protagonist is thwarted by Microsoft Vista’s cunning subversion of a USB Wifi network adapter on the robot’s desktop computer. But never fear! The robot has sidestepped the issue — though he took the time to issue loud four letter words to the heavens — with the use of his new laptop. Portable computing with a built in wireless adapter for the win!

Around this time last year some of us were bemoaning the departure of some of our favorite Fabergé eggs. Chris Perez and then later Jess Todd went to Cleveland for Mark DeRosa. Matt Holliday was acquired for the man we affectionately dubbed the Walrus, as well as Clayton Mortensen and Shane Peterson. That was four of our top ten prospects going into the 2009 season, and Peterson was in most publications’ top 15-20.

I wasn’t a big fan of either trade at the moment they happened, but I gradually sobered up from my prospect fanboyism and realized that the deals, in themselves, were perfectly justifiable even if it meant putting a pretty big dent in the farm system. So far, Luhnow has done a pretty good job re-stocking the system with some potential, assuming the tops picks of the draft sign and the Carlos Matias signing is OK’d.

I thought it would be fun just to check in with some of the players and see how they’re doing for their new clubs. This isn’t to pronounce a winner or a loser in the trade, just a status update.

I’m moving this weekend and it turns out robots can accumulate a lot of junk & trash in two years time. Subsequently, the DFRs may or may not be on normal schedule depending on the ease of the move. Please bear with me.

After being drafted and signed in 2009, Robert Stock took the Appy league by storm hitting .322/.388/.550 in 165 PAs.  He hit 7 homeruns in that short timespan and had 37.5% of his hits go for extra bases.  In 2010, he’s hitting .203/.316/272 in 187 PAs.

This isn’t an indictment of Stock — well, I didn’t intend it that way at least — I’m just here to throw a little cold water on the hype you’ll see for 2010 draftees (Nick Longmire, I’m looking at you).  These draftees may be the next great Cardinals player but please, don’t base that opinion on their performance at a short season club this year.  The statistics are of questionable sample size and be wary of the age issue. The Cardinals are sending a lot of 2010 draftees to Batavia and Johnson City and the level of competition there is not on par with the full season teams in the Midwest League.

Nick Longmire might be an awesome player. He’s certainly hitting well so far — .400/.429/.920 — and it’s worth noting that he was (probably) drafted for his tools and not his college performance.  That said, take his 2010 statistics and overall performance in context.  It may not be as informative as you’d initially think.

I’ll be going to the Batavia game tonight, if everything goes according to plan. I’m very intrigued to see Nicholas Longmire and see if this power binge is legit. If there are any players any of you are particularly interested in, let me know before 6 pm ET in the thread here and I’ll try to get photos and impressions.

On to the DFR!

I found myself faced with an unexpected question this past Saturday at VEB day. The topic of the conversation was Bryan Anderson, longtime prospect and martyr of the “Veteran Backup Catcher” philosophy. He’d become something of an afterthought this year after seemingly falling by the wayside to one Matt Pagnozzi. So what has the erstwhile 2005 prospect sidekick been up to.
