Since the Cardinals game tonight is as frustrating and long as an AL East game, let’s check out the DFR!

Memphis 5, Oklahoma City 4

  • Lance Lynn had a rocky start but held it together allowing 4 runs over 6 innings. He only struck out one guy, but walked 4.
  • Andrew Brown (AAA pitcher version) pitched 2 shutout innings, striking out 2.
  • Fernando Salas grabbed the save with a shutout inning, allowing a hit, but wiping that out with a double play.
  • Joe Mather and James Rapoport both had two hits. Mather added a stolen base.
  • Dan Descalso and Amaury Cazana both had doubles.

Springfield was off.

Palm Beach 5, Clearwater 7

  • Brett Zawacki only went 3.1 innings in his start giving up 3 runs – 2 walks and 2 Ks.
  • Kevin Thomas gave up 2 runs of his own in 1.2 innings.
  • Joel Pichardo took the loss giving up another 2 runs in 2 innings.
  • Tyler Norrick was the only pitcher to not allow a run for the Cardinals striking out 2 and walking 1.
  • Chris Swauger had two singles, 3 stolen bases and a walk.
  • Tommy Pham had 3 singles and an RBI.
  • Alex Castellanos had two singles and a stolen base.

Quad Cities 2, Great Lakes 6

  • Eric Fornataro started for QC and his perifs were solid with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. He allowed 8 hits and 6 runs (4 earned).
  • Chris Notti struck out 2 and walked 1 in 1 inning.
  • Jesse Simpson and Aaron Terry finished off the game with a shutout inning each.
  • Ryde Rodriquez had the big hit with a two-run double.
  • Lots of other guys had singles. (How’s that for insight?)

    I saw that Tyler Bighames’ suspension ended today. I also saw on MiLB.com on his player page that he is on QC. But he is not listed on QC’s roster. Does anyone know where he’ll play when he comes back and when will he come back. It could be tomorrow, but will it be? Also, what is your opinion of him? I heard good things last season, but his stats didn’t show it. The organization must think somewhat highly of him since they signed him to a 10th round bonus and he was a 31st round pick. I guess my real question is: What’s the deal with Tyler Bighames? (anything you know about him or his situation).

    He’s been at EST since May 16, he’s finally able to formally practice, will probably play for a short season team this year.

    I said this before not sure if anyone read it, if you have milb.tv you can watch the Quad City River Bandits the next two days. Normally this is only AAA but some reason the QC games are being shown. While tonights STL game was frustrating its great news that the bats are waking up and that they are fighting and not giving up. Gotta give recognition to form FR regular Jon Jay with this first career HR and a great overall day.

    @Andrew:

    Agreed Jon Jay has been very good so far for STL. Makes you wonder what on earth are they going to do with all the OF’s the organization has built up. Mather, Stavinoha, Jay, Rasmus, Craig, Henley, Rappaport, Robinson. I realy don’t see too much of a concern with Robinson and Rappaport though. They will more than likely go by the way sides as they just don’t seem to have ML caliber size, arms, or power for the OF positions.

    @mizzcards:

    I divide those guys into two groups. In one group you have 1b/DH/LF types like Craig, Mark Hamilton, and Curt Smith. They aren’t going to dislodge Pujols or Holliday for the 1B/LF jobs, and DH is out of the question, so they’re all competing for maybe one bench job that’s currently held by Stavinoha (who seems to have a good enough arm to play RF; he used to get a lot of assists in the minors, IIRC). Aaron Luna is another who may be moving into that group. (No idea what kind of arm he has.)

    Then you have Rasmus, who’s a starter and potential impact player, and Jay, who may be Rasmus’ equal as a CF but doesn’t have his power potential. (AFAIK, Jay wasn’t credited with a single error in his first three years of pro baseball. He got his first last season w. Memphis.) Robinson, Henley, and Rapoport are strong defensive OFs, but I don’t see them beating out Jay for that 4th OF spot.

    Mather seems to be in between the two groups. He really looked like an emerging monster in 2007-08, but I don’t know what he has left post-injury.

    There’s also a third category, the super-athletic OFs like Jones, Pham, Chambers, and Ingram. Chambers had his breakthrough season last year, and Ingram may be having his this year. It would be intriguing to have one of those guys push his way into the mix as a leadoff hitter. But it would take a lot of speed, combined w. plate discipline, to justify starting a non-power hitter in RF to replace Ludwick two years from now. To make up for the loss of power in RF, we’d have to get a lot more production from 2B and SS than we currently have.

    Anyone know what give with lance lynn…he had such a good spring(i know, small sample size) but this season he seems to be struggling to throw strikes and isn’t fooling anyone…is his velocity down? is he fighting his delivery? anyone? anyone? beuller?

    @Bob P: sounds like to me bighames has some serious growing up to do….on top of the drug suspension, he also got popped for DUI and non-violent resisting arrest in January. He got tasered and his blood alcohol level was more than 3 times the legal limit….all this from an 18 or 19 year old….of course he was driving his new yellow mustang that i’m sure he bought with his signing bonus

    i wish teams could put the bonuses of these HS school kids into some account that they could not touch until they turned 21…and 18 year old kid should not have >$100,000 to his name, its just a recipe for disaster….but i know that will never happen

  7. Andrew says:

    I was wondering if someone would get a drug of abuse suspension for alcohol if they are under 21? My assumption is that it was marijuana but an interesting thought about if a player under 21 can get suspensded for drinking.

    Well shoot……just looked at the QC rotation and I will miss Hooker and Scheider pitching. Rondan pitches tonight and Miller tomorrow. I’ve seen Rondon in person and really don’t want to see him. Will be good seeing Miller make a start. Was real impressed with Joe Kelly when the QC game was on MLB TV. Fortonato strugged yesterday. Miller Thursday.

    Apparently, the organization signed an 18 year old dominican right hander to a 1.5 million dollar deal. Word is he throws a high 90s fastball with cutting action, a so-so mid 80s change up and a developing curveball. Scouts say he has excellent command.

  10. pitch and hit says:

    @VolsnCards5:

    There are plenty of players that get a lot more money and know how to behave themselves.
    I beleive in giving second chances, but this player has used them up. I wouldn’t be surprised if after the draft and players sign, those that messed up get the boot.

    I blame this on parents, they know if their players are mature enough to handle it, but they are more enamored with the fact that their sons will get some bucks to play, and that gives bragging rights as well. Most kids need the college experience (if only for a few years) to grow up before they begin proball.
