The low minors win and the high minors lose.  A rather uneventful DFR for Saturday.

Memphis 3, Albuquerque 9

  • Allen Craig was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Amaury Cazana was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Evan MacLane got lit up for 11 hits in 5 innings. He allowed 8 runs in the process.

Springfield 0, San Antonio 4

  • Daryl Jones was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Matt Carpenter was 3-for-5.
  • Chuckie Fick pitched 3 scoreless frames allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.
  • Blake King struck out 3 across 2.2 innings. He walked 1 and allowed 2 hits.  King has 36 strikeouts against 18 walks in 30 innings this year. He’s been difficult to hit as well with just 18.
  • Casey Mulligan allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2.

Palm Beach 9, Daytona 5

  • Xavier Scruggs hit a homerun and walked.
  • Domnit Bolivar and Tommy Pham both went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Jared Bogany went 3-for-4 with a double and a homerun.
  • Arquimedes Nieto had a wild outing walking 4 in 6 innings. He allowed 5 hits for 2 ER while striking out 1.

Quad Cities 3, Lansing 2 (6 innings due to rain)

  • Jason Stidham, Ivan Casto and Michael Swinson all doubled.
  • Scott Schneider struck out 8 over 5.2 innings. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk for 2 ER.  He also maintained a 2:1 groundball to flyball ratio.

azru’s favorite player is back in the DFR!

  2. mizzcards says:

oh on a small side note Matt Carpenter was only 3 for 5 and is hitting .476 in his last 10 games. Can he please be moved to 2nd base???

  3. Lou Schuler says:

@mizzcards: That question has come up before. He’s a big guy — 6’3″, 200+ lbs. Plus, he’s 24 and I don’t think he’s ever played there before. I believe he was a third baseman all five years at TCU. If his next 12 months as a pro match his first 12 months, he could be a useful four-corners guy, and he may even give Freese a run for the starting job at 3rd base in a couple of years. But as for second base, I have to think that if anyone thought he could play there, he’d be there already.

anyone know when shelby is scheduled to pitch again? i know he got “scratched” a few days ago, but i haven’t heard anything about an injury, so i just figure QC was just moving their rotation around

  5. bookerd says:

In regards to Shelby, read that he was skipped in his last start because QC was rearranging their starting rotation order, plus they are trying to protect how many innings he throws this year. Anyway not sure when he is scheduled to start again.

  6. Ryan says:

That’s four straight games with a homer for Scruggs, and five in the last six contests. He’s OPSing .952 on the year now in a pitcher’s league. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he a pretty highly touted HS player before going to UNLV? Should we be getting a tad intrigued by the X-Man?

  7. Wade says:

Az … you’re big on Burn Notice right? Thoughts on the season opener?

I was at the game in Albuquerque last night. Not a great game to witness, but two things stood out to me. Amaury Cazana nailed the ball each of his 4 ABs. All were hard liners, two atom balls, the double and a single that took a convenient hop to the left fielder or it would have been another double. Instead, Amaury was thrown out at second.

Donovan Solano looked very sharp fielding at third. I was impressed with his glove work and the strength and accuracy of his arm. Unfortunately, he looked pretty lost at the plate and he’s small enough I doubt he’ll ever develop any power, even if he does figure out how to hit for average.

I was at the Memphis game, and I didn’t like what I saw. The whole team looked flat to apathetic. A few specifics:

    * MacLane got lit up like a Christmas tree. He seemed to have two speeds: slow and slower, and they weren’t fooling anybody. Even the outs were hit hard. One might be tempted to write that off as a side effect of playing at Albuquerque; the park is at almost the same elevation as Planet Coors, without the humidor. However, the Isotopes also started a junkballing lefty, and he didn’t have much trouble with the Baby Birds.
    * Amaury the All-Devouring was the only Redbird who hit the ball hard, and he certainly did that. However, that seems to be about all he can do. He got lazy once on defense and it cost them, and he committed a baserunning gaffe to get thrown out “stretching” a single — even though the hit had double written all over it.
    * Right field in Albuqerque is a BRUTAL sun field for the first part of night games in mid-summer, and Joe Mather had some issues there. He lost a fly in the sun in the first (although he recovered in time to snag it) and looked like Chris Duncan stumbling around out there (the goofiest fly-ball route I’ve ever seen was by Dunc in another game in Albuquerque). Shortly afterward, he stumbled and didn’t get to another, harder-hit ball. It looked to me like he caught a cleat, and I was worried that he might have turned an ankle or worse, but there appeared to be no lasting damage.
    * Nice play by Craig, who was playing first, on a foul popup. If there is such a thing as a 4-corners utility guy, that play helped make the case that he can be one.

All told, it was a blah game from Memphis. The fireworks display after the game partially made up for it, though; by far the most spectacular post-game fireworks I’ve ever seen.

  10. Gruntosaurus says:

@punditmoi: Where were you? I was all the way down the right field line, in the “upper deck,” such as it is. Pitched and batted balls were all but invisible from there for the first three innings because of the sun. All that said, that’s a very nice park for seeing a game, and there were nearly 12,000 fans in attendance.

  11. Andrew says:

Amaury is heading south of the border.

  12. Andrew says:

Luhnow in a Hummel article said the areas they are looking to fill in the draft are left handed pitching, speed and power. Saying left handed pitching is the tie breaker. Says there are alot of plus plus speed guys in the draft but that doesn’t necessarly mean they are first rounders. Luhnow does expect that we will get some burners. Wonder if we make a splash and take Jesse Biddle in the first round? Who’s the power bad we may be interested in?

  13. nmstar says:

@Andrew: I’ve read Biddle is the top choice for the Brewers @ 14. BJ Rains tweeted yesterday that the Cards would take the best player available and “are prepared to roll the dice” whatever that may mean.

  14. Andrew says:

Biddle at 14? Wow this is the first I’ve heard of that. Maybe rolling the dice means Wilson? Lets hope.

  15. azruavatar says:

@Wade: Sorry, was only a casual viewer of Burn Notice. I’m getting a DVR next month so that may change but I haven’t watched it in some time.

With the end of LOST, I only follow about 2.5 hours of TV a week. House, Community, 30 Rock and Archer (assuming it comes back for a 2nd season)

  16. @ Spikez,
I want to know who is Azruavater favorite player. I saw Springfield in San Antonio last night. Fick pitched well great movement on his sinker 90-91. King has a good slider and FB 90-94 . Mulligan has a heavy FB. 90-94,but looked like a one pitch guy.

  17. kelley says:

It is good to hear that someone that has authority sees the same thing that I have noticed….and that is the fact that the cardinals need left handed pitchers. I hope that the lefties that they select develop out the same way that the scouts project them. There have been too many players that projected high and produced low.

  18. azruavatar says:

@Play Hardball: I believe he’s referring to Fick. I ruffled some feathers earlier this year with regards to Fick. It’s been a running gag since then that I don’t like him.

Of course, the same has been said about Ottavino, Kozma and a host of other players. Sometimes it’s true; most of the time it’s a misconception.

  19. Those three pitchers based on what I have seen in the big leagues just need a chance.
