Let’s go to the quick hit Draft Day DFR. Don’t forget to stop back tomorrow for more draft. Azruavatar will be hosting the draft chat tomorrow and it starts at noon Eastern.

Also, below are some great scouting reports on videos on the new Cardinals!

Memphis 20, Albuquerque 7

  • Oneli Perez started for Memphis and somehow limited the runs in the launching pad they have there in Albuquerque.

  • Tyler Greene was 3-4 with a HR.
  • Bryan Anderson also went yard.

Springfield 0, San Antonio 3

  • Jason Buursma struck out 1 in 2 no-hit innings.
  • The only Sprinfield hit on the night was by Daryl Jones. He also had a stolen base.

  1. Pierce says:

    2-2 with a HR and 2 walks in the game so far for Tyler Greene. They’re going to have to do something with him or Brendan Ryan sometime, because Greene deserves a prolonged look in the Majors.

  2. Andrew says:

    agreed- I hope that Freese doesnt get hurt but Greene has to be the first alternative at 3b in that situation. He should get a shot at 2b also.

  3. nmstar says:

    Guys, I’m surprised you think Greene can help the big league club. He is no Aaron Miles.

  4. Zach says:

    @Pierce:

    Maybe Greene can take Hawksworth’s place in the rotation?

  5. Kazakhstanny Danny says:

    Is there any word at all coming from the Cardinals about Shelby Miller?

    Silence doesn’t sit well with me.

  6. azruavatar says:

    @Kazakhstanny Danny: All’s well. Luhnow says it’s just a chance to skip him in the rotation while they reshuffle for the second half.

  7. Snayke says:

    Tyler Greene’s MLE is now .286/.337/.435.

    Skip Schumaker, you’re not welcome here anymore.

  8. dk says:

    @Snayke: that’s not what his paycheck says. Maybe a little premature signing him to that multi year deal, with Descalso and Greene progressing like they are.

  9. mizzcards says:

    @Pierce:

    Absolutely!! The problem is the organization created a problem where there shouldn’t have been a problem by signing Skip to a multi year deal when one wasn’t needed. Tyler Greene should have been the 1st in line to backup at SS and 2nd all year so that this year would have been his adjusting year. Then next year he should have been the starting 2nd baseman and let Skip walk of trade him. This is a ridiculous waste of drafted players that you have drafted and taken the time to develope. I’m sure when other AAA teams & organizations look at the 1st four batters in the Memphis line up tonight they are saying why on earth are these guys still at AAA. Just look at their BA’s and the results tonight!!

    Jay 3 for 6, 2- 2B, 1 BB, 3 RBI, .354 avg,
    Greene 3 for 4, HR, 2 BB, 4 RBI, .335 avg, May – .355 avg, June – .433 avg
    Craig 4 for 5, 3B, 4 RBI, .310 avg, June – .444 avg
    Mather 3 for 6, HR, 2 RBI, .351 avg

  10. George says:

    Swauger is coming along nicely after being on the DL for so long. He is regaining his power and is hitting well. Would like to see him back in LF. He seems to have worked on his speed while on the DL as he has stolen a few bases. I guess he couldn’t work his upper body due to the elbow injury so he worked on his core and legs. Scruggs continues to do well which is good to see after ripping his bicep last year. What’s up with Pham. Seems to hit in spring training but then tapers off.

  11. Jeff Roman says:

    Keep in mind that Memphis went off in Albuquerque, which is a well known launching pad. So take tonight’s stats with a grain of salt.

  12. LDC says:

    If Ryan is still stuggling at the All Star break I don’t know how they keep Greene from coming up and sharing time with Flip at SS. Ryan has turned it up in the last 10 games before looking bad the last couple. I say by then they release Miles and move Greene up, let Ryan be the new Miles. As much as I lover to watch Ryan play defense I don’t see him hitting well enough to be an everyday SS.

  13. Andrew says:

    The team is a much better team with Ryan as an everyday shortstop. I’m sure the pitchers are much more comfortable with him back there too. Once we are all healed up just put him in the 8 hole and forget about his hitting. He has no business at 1 or 2 and we are doing him a disservice putting him in that position. Its the perfect way to get in his head again mentally regarding his hitting and its not necessary.

  14. Hungary Jack says:

    @dk:

    Agree that it was premature. IIRC, the Cobbler’s deal was consummated while Flopez was still on the market. Defensively I don’t see much difference between the two. The bats are a different story.

  15. ozziehof says:

    I too would like to see Greene get an extended look sometime, but it’s not like he has never been given opportunity. He was the lead candidate for the utility role in spring training and played too tight, somewhat blowing a great opportunity.

    He has had some sporadic chances thus far in his career to translate his AAA to the big club, with 144 career plate appearances and a .224/.273/.336 slash line. He hasn’t seized the opportunity that has been available yet, and Strauss says there are many withing the org that feel he plays tight when called up.

    It’s great that he has the right attitude and has gone back to Memphis with his head up and has continued to perform well there. I think he will get more chances, certainly, and will hopefully relax and let the game come to him. But he has to perform well, taking full opportunity when given what will most likely not be everyday chances at the big league level.

    I don’t see why a big league job should be given to him solely because of how he has done at AAA.

  16. Snayke says:

    @ozziehof:

    “I don’t see why a big league job should be given to him solely because of how he has done at AAA.”

    So should it be judged on something more concrete like an arm-wrestling contest?

  17. Forsch31 says:

    >>>”Maybe a little premature signing him to that multi year deal, with Descalso and Greene progressing like they are.”

    Shumaker only has a 2-year deal, so it’s not like he’s going to hold anybody back that long. If Descalso or Greene outplay him in spring training next year for the starter’s job, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shumaker traded or even the 4th outfield role he used to have.

  18. ozziehof says:

    @Snayke:

    No, it should be based on the ability to actually stick at MLB level. Take advantage of opportunities.

    I like Greene, honestly. I just want to see him actually earn extended playing time when he gets the chance on callups.

    That should be fairly concrete. You think that great stats at AAA should guarantee him a spot on the Cards roster even though he has struggled when given opportunities?

  19. Snayke says:

    At what point have the Cardinals gave Greene a chance to stick? How is he supposed to get better if he’s yanked in and out of the lineup every other game?

  20. ozziehof says:

    @Snayke:

    Last year, between June 5 and July 4, Greene played in 28 games, starting 18, and had 71 PAs. He hit .194/.239/.224 for a .463 ops. He had 4 runs, 13 hits, 2 2bs, and 3 rbis. He had 21 ks to 3 bbs.

    He was overmatched at the time, but he went back to AAA and played well. In the spring, he was the frontrunner for the utility spot, but he did not play well, especially defensively. According to Strauss, he played “tight” all spring.

    This year, the lineup has been pretty well set already, with Ryan earning ample time to work out his struggles due to his play last year and defensive ability. Plus Lopez. Freese has locked down 3b, and Schu has been and will be given a lot of rope at 2b (not that I love this). His only real available spot this year is as a utility, that’s just the way it is unless he he plays so well that he forces himself into a starting role, much like Brendan Ryan did last year.

    Sorry, but I think he has been given ample chances to produce in a utility role, and last year was given a pretty darn good shot to seize a starting role at 3b or ss. If he needs a cushier position and 3 or 4 months of starting to learn on the job, he may be in the wrong org. It’s harsh, but this is not a rebuilding club and he has to seize the opportunity when it presents itself. Jon Jay did that and did extremely well, and, unfortunately, got screwed (I think signing Winn was very unfair to Jay and don’t like the signing).
