For those Austin Wilson freaks out there we just nabbed him in the 12th! Seeing his name next to the Cards logo is very nice. Now I think there is a slim chance he signs but I will be curious to see what Luhnow and Mo say about this pick. WOW
Use the money we had set aside for Mateo to get this done. The last week his parents did say the right amount of money he will sign as they feared they had completely scared teams off. If we can only have one who do you want Cox or Wilson?
My guess is that Austin Wilson is insurance in case Cox still has a high price. Or it’s possible we don’t sign Cox, sign Wilson and collect the 26th pick next year.
@Andrew: I take Cox only because there is less ??? about his. Also Wilson will cost $3M+ and maybe even much more.
Cox wants 6. He won’t get it but thats what he says he wants. I like Zach Cox for sure but he doesn’t have the same potential to be a cornerstone guy like Wilson does. With Freese and Descalseo seemly big league quality players were do we fit Cox in in 2 years when hes ready. There is something to say about the constant funny inneudo and possible headlines with a last name like Cox though. Cards try to fit in Cox in infield lol
@UncleBuck44:
I like that idea…Cox will be a good major leaguer, Wilson has a chance to be a great one. Sign Wilson and get the 2 first round picks next year in a stacked draft.
The major plus side with going for Wilson over Cox is that Wilson comes with the 26th overall pick in the 2011 draft as compensation for not going with Cox.
Wilson could also be leverage for the Cardinals in negotiations with Cox, who they may want all along.
Lots of possibilities.
I would have rather had that 5’11″ RHP from UC Davis, though.
@Andrew: If Cox really wants $6M then I see what your saying. I am just not sure that its going to take even $3M to get him when its all said and done. I will say between $2.4-$2.6M
He does have 2 more shots at the draft…though he will definately sign with a team next year as Sr’s have no leverage. Next years draft is stacked but depending on how good a year Cox could have next year he may not make as much. How are the bats next year? I know pitchign is stacked for the 2011 draft.
