Today’s DFR is brought to you by Pomeranz, not a type of dog.

Memphis had the night off.

Springfield 1, Tulsa 2

  • Mike Folli and Trey Henley (as a PH) picked up the only 2 hits of the game. Folli hit a double.
  • The Mayor Gary Daley pitched a strong game, going 7 IP, yielding only 3 H while walking 2 and striking out 4.
  • Casey Mulligan, however, would like a do-over. Mulligan gave up 3 H and 2ER in 1 IP, with only 1 K.
  • Blake King had a balk, but otherwise pitched well giving up a hit in his IP.
  • Ghosts of draft day past Stu Pomeranz picked up the save for the Tulsa Drillers.

Palm Beach 2, Charlotte 3 ( Game 1/7 innings)

Palm Beach 3, Charlotte 0(Game 2/7 innings)

Quad Cities 6, South Bend 7 (10 innings)

  • Nico Vasquez went 3-for-6 with 2 2Bs and a RBI.

  • Chris Swinson went 3-for-5 with a 3B, 1 R and 1 RBI.
  • Daniel Calhoun went 3.1 IP giving up 6 H and 3 R (2 ER) with 2 K.
  • Justin Smith went the next 1.2 IP and gave up a BB and 2 K.
  • Joe Kelly turned in 3 IP with 3 H and 3 R of his own (2 ER) on a BB with 2 K.
  • Jesse Simpson eventually took the loss with giving up a run on a solo HR. He went 2 IP, giving up 2 H and 1 BB, striking out 4.

Strong game by Daley after a few months of very poor ones. What is everyones thoughts on Ryde Rodriguez moving to Palm Beach later in the year or next year? I don’t think we pay 500k for him to keep him in QC indefinately. Any additional word on Miller his turn in the rotation has to be coming up again. Also for anyone that knows when are short season rosters announced and which drafties start out in QC? I would think Cox would but he wont sign till the last minute.

  2. The Other Tom says:

Tommy Pham Phact of the Day:

Pham is batting .500 in all 7 inning games played on June 9th since 2010.

  3. jjray says:

Anybody think there is a glimmer of hope for Ryde Rodriguez? Perhaps Lord Marti needs to change his name to Ryde Rodriguez and go to low A. It worked for Jimmy Journell. He got a fake Canadian birth certificate with the name Blake Hawksworth on it and bamb, he’s in the majors.

  4. mizzcards says:

Ryde Rodriguez will more than likely be left at Quad Cities this year unless he is able to put together an entire month of hitting .300 or higher. If he does it this month don’t be surprised if he gets the bump. Another guy that started out great at Quad Cities that has since cooled off is Adams. I think a change of scenery may do him well. Needs to be challenged again at Palm Beach.

    @ double j

Blake Hawksworth is better than journell. When he came in last week in releif he was hitting 96 and 97 on the gun. I’m not sure mr journell ever did that.

  5. BigJawnMize says:

Journell was just an awful draft pick.

Also just noticed Nick Additon is now listed as 6-5 215pds now. Is this a typo or did he all of a sudden grow 2 inches and gain 45 pounds. He has been listed as 6-3 170 pds the last 3 years.

  7. BacBored says:

Journell threw a 97 MPH fastball and had a sharp slider while still in college.
Upon signing, the brain trust, consistent with their theory that everybody should train for the job they will not do, converted him to a starter. He spent his minor league career struggling to learn a curveball.

Then when he came to St Louis, they told him to junk the curveball that he had worked on and wondered why he had poor control of the other two pitches, which he had worked on less.

If he had been able to spot the fastball and slider, maybe by concentrating on them in the minors, he would have been very successful. I suspect he was handled very poorly.

  8. Silent George says:

    @BigJawnMize:
He was a fourth rounder that at least got a cup of coffee in the majors, and showed enough potential for a while that he was named the organization’s top prospect by BA. I’d guess that’s better than average for the fourth round. I’d agree that he was an awful “top propect” though…

  9. lassie01 says:

Journell wasn’t a top draft pick was he? I’m waaay too lazy to look it up but I thought he was like a 4th or 5th rounder? Those picks don’t have a super high success rate anyways.

  10. JC says:

@lassie01: Look at the post right above yours and you will have your answer :)

  11. tnek5 says:

I’m really starting to worry about Miller and his lack of starts in June. I know that we have heard they are reorganizing the rotation but really he should have at least one start by now. Also, I hope the cardinals come to there senses and drop miles to bring up greene.

  12. db says:

If PB needs an outfielder, I assume Ingram, if healthy, would get the call before Ryde. Ryde is hitting .393 in the month of June and .390 over his last 10 games.

  13. PJ says:

    @BacBored:

Does the lack of success ever fall on the player and not “poor handling’?

  14. cariocacardinal says:

I saw Journall pitch his 7 inning minor league no-hitter. I´ve nevr sen a pitcher work the ball in and out and change speds as well as he did that day. The opposition hitters wer lunging at pitches they were so off balance.

  15. jjray says:

@mizzcards: Here is a little tip. Don’t try to debate over the top levity with facts.

  16. Andrew says:

Maybe they are shutting him down for the first half of the year and working more on his delivery or other aspects of pitching? I called media relations for Quad Cities and got the rotation for the next 4 days. Schneider tonight, Hooker Friday, Fortonato Saturday and Blazek/Rondon Sunday. So Miller will be missing 2 times through the rotation at least.

  17. pitch and hit says:

Sounds to me like they are preparing Miller for high A, if not hurt? Taking him out of the rotation allows for them to place him in when they want to. But you don’t gain experience without facing hitters in a real game situation.
They will never trash Miles, he is a seasoned WS winner and TLR wanted him back, in case of playoffs, he’s an experienced guy. He wants experience. I am not sure I agree with that, but he runs the show.

Good job by Daley, I feel for him, all that work and no win to show for it. Mulligan doesn’t seem to be as sharp in AA. Smarter hitters there, they know how to wait on the pitches and can hit the CB.

  18. Andrew says:

No way Miller is going to High A already as he has been hit worse than any pitcher in the QC rotation.

  19. pitch and hit says:

    @Andrew

I was just taking a stab at why he isn’t in the rotation. The organization isn’t always eager to share in the facts.

  20. mizzcards says:

    @jjray:

Please explain? I’m sorry but I can understand remarks of narcissism? Thank for the tip though.

  21. azruavatar says:

Dang. If Joe Kelly pitched Wednesday, he won’t be up again till Monday. He was one of the pitchers I really wanted to see this weekend when I’m up in Quad Cities.

  22. Andrew says:

Hooker tomorrow will be worth it

  23. cgood says:

I saw Journell hit 99 for 2 innings when I was with a scout at a college game. He was as
nasty as they come prior to injury. He was worthy of a 4th rrd pick.

  24. the one says:

millers elbow is bugging him, thats why hes been out. he is day to day. he took a week off throwing and has started again.

  25. Lou Schuler says:

IIRC, the only reason Journell was a 4th rounder was because he was coming off TJ surgery. Otherwise he would’ve been a first- or sandwich-round pick. At one point I believe he was considered the best closer in college ball. I’m working off deep memory, but I’m pretty sure it was considered a bold pick at the time, and for a while, as others have noted, it looked like it was going to pay off.

It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the Cards completely botched his development. Those were dark, dark days for those of us who follow these players from start to finish.

  26. BigJawnMize says:

All things said about Journell here were true. I saw him a number of times in the minor leagues and he was just awful. Perhaps not an awful pick but definetly a failure of a player and organization.

  27. cariocacardinal says:

Miller is supposed to start being paired with Hooker in the tandem so we may seem him the night of Hooker´s start.

Mulligan is struggling a little at AA but his FIP there is near 2.60 which is not terrible.

  28. Anderw says:

Good to know but where did you get your info? I talked to Media Relations and Hooker is starting tonight, is Miller pitching with him tonight?
