Reporting from the muggy, humid Quad Cities, here’s your Friday DFR.

Memphis 1, Iowa 4

  • Jon Jay, Daniel Descalso and Ruben Gotay all walked twice. Gotay also singled.
  • Evan MacLane had a typically strong outing. He scattered 7 hits over 7 innings striking out 5. He walked 1 for 1 ER.
  • Oneli Perez coughed up 3 runs in his lone inning of work.
  • Pete Parise pitched a perfect 9th.

Springfield 6, Tulsa 3

  • Steve Hill was 2-for-4 with a double and a HR.
  • Tyler Henley continues his strong showing returning from the DL. He went 4-for-4 with a double. It’s hard to know how much the injury was hampering him but certainly his hot hitting return would appear to be anecdotal evidence of that.
  • Matt Carpenter was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.  Since his promotion to Springfield, Carpenter has continued his hot hitting ways going .342/.407/.486 showing good doubles power and the continued ability to reach base.  At 24 (November birthday), Carpenter isn’t young but he’s moved quickly after being drafted just a year ago.
  • Chuckie Fick went 5 innings striking out an impressive 7.  He allowed 3 hits and 1 ER.  Fick continues a strong season with tremendous command, the ability to strike out batters and generate a significant number of grounders.
  • Blake King continued to display his new-found command with 0 walks and 3 strikeouts in 2 perfect innings.
  • Casey Mulligan allowed 2 runs and 2 walks retiring just 2 batters.  He allowed 1 hit while striking out 1.
  • Adam Reifer finished out the game with four outs.  Walking 1 and allowing a hit.

Quad Cities 8, West Michigan 3

  • Michael Swinson was 2-for-5.
  • Ryan Jackson and Jason Stidham both went 2-for-4. Stidham doubled and tripled.
  • Edgar Lara went 2-for-3 with a double, a massive HR and a walk.
  • Deryk Hooker allowed 5 hits in 5 scoreless innings striking out 6.
  • Justin Smith struck out 4 and allowed 2 hits in 2 innings.
  • Jason Novak allowed 4 hits and 3 runs in 1 inning of work.

I remember we all kinda scratched our heads when Fick was drafted. Nice to see an underdog doing well.

  2. Andrew says:

You give a scouting report on Deryk Hooker? Does he have big league stuff? I’ve heard he does and I’m sure hes poised for a promotion soon.

  3. mizzcards says:

I remember how everyone was saying that Casey Mulligan should be at AA. Well now we see that he’s got some work to do and still needs adjusting AA.

  4. Tackle Box says:

    @mizzcards:

While I see your point and kind of agree with you, I believe the sentiment was not so much that Mulligan should be at AA but that he had nothing left to prove or accomplish at A+ and I don’t think you can argue with that. He’s not dominating at AA like he was for Palm Beach but that’s why he needs to be in Springfield.

  5. pitch and hit says:

Hey, is it me or is there a new format?

  6. pitch and hit says:

Oh my, I must have picked up the mobile format on my pc..strange.
I agree with the statment that Mulligan had nothing left to prove in high A and it was time to move up.
    Fick is awesome.
I think a lot of good things that we are seeing from the pitching staff is a result of the hard work of Dennis Martinez, good thing in my opinion that they moved him to AA.

@Andrew: When I get back to my normal stomping grounds on Monday, I’ll start my writeup of the weekend. The short answer on Hooker is yes. One of only a few players I was impressed by at Friday’s game. Two more days though — some others could jump out.

  8. Zach says:

Does anyone know the complete list of players release by the org?

  9. kelley says:

    @pitch and hit:

I agree with you 100%. El Presidente is the best thing that happened to the cardinals pitching staff. He works dozens of extra bullpens with the players that are struggling and shows them how to make the corrections. Mulligan will be back to his old form very soon; and King, Fick and Reifer are direct results of the extra work with their pitching coach. Henley was a timely addition to AA both for the team and himself.

    @Tackle Box:

Agree he had nothing left to prove at PB. But it is apparent from his numbers so far that PB is not Springfield and that he has some adjustments to make.

    Matt Adams:
    - Anyone know why Matt Adams has not been playing?

    Kyle Conely -
    - Anyone know what the injury was? Where is he at now in the organization?

  11. cardstatman says:

@Zach: I don’t know if this list is complete, but these guys were cut: John Durham, Kyle Heim, Michael Thompson, Jose Calero, Gerardo Mannbel, Luis Orozco, Alejandro Pinard, Roberto Perez

    Mulligan’s FIP is under 3.00 — what’s the issue?

  13. Forsch31 says:

cardio–There really isn’t any. Mulligan has had three bad outings in a row in which he’s given up 6 runs in 2.2 innings (two of them against the same team), but otherwise, he’s been more than solid. He doesn’t have the stuff to be a closer at the higher levels, so he’s not going to dominate like he did in Palm Beach.

  14. BigRob says:

I was under the impression that Mulligan had pretty good stuff. I don’t think he throws as hard as some of the other relievers in our system, but I thought he was a low 90′s guy guy who could get it up to the mid 90′s. I also thought I read that he has a plus changeup. I guess if his fastball is flat or straight, then he’s more of a 7th inning guy, but if he can get run on it, then that would give him 2 good pitches, which is all you need to be an effective reliever.

  15. Forsch31 says:

BigRob–I didn’t say Mulligan didn’t have good stuff; I said that he doesn’t have the stuff to be a *closer*, which is more than just an effective reliever.

  16. VolsnCards5 says:

Has miller pitched at all recently? i haven’t seen his name in the DFR in a few weeks

  17. cariocacardinal says:

@VolsnCards5: Miller is now scheduled to resume pitching in games on the 17th.

  18. Andrew says:

Horrible luck I’m going to see them the 18th-20th

  19. Andrew says:

cario- any word on what was going on? They just think he threw too many innings too early?

  20. Andrew says:

Shelby had a productive bullpen on Friday to work on some specifics. His next game appearance will be likely on the 17th.

Tweet per Luhnow today……..working on a new pitch recently or mechanical issues?

  21. Lou Schuler says:

@Zach: Zach, if you go to this link, you’ll see the names of the 8 players in the lower right-hand corner: http://stlcardinals.scout.com/a.z?s=321&p=2&c=976582&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fstlcardinals.scout.com%2f2%2f976582.html
