A few non-baseball notes as I recover from my 4-hour drive:
- The A-Team is a wonderfully fun movie. It shows admirable restraint — for an action movie — throughout most of the film with the exception of 2 scenes. If you’re willing to forgive a flying tank and a rocket launcher into a cargo ship, this movie is loads of fun.
- I say this as an apolitical statement: The Recovery and Reinvestment Act (aka The Stimulus Bill) is terribly inconvenient to my summer road trips as well as my daily commute.
- Google Maps tells me that the STL to Quad Cities trip time should be about 4 hours and 45 minutes. Based on my empirical data, it is approximately a 4 hour drive.
- There are a lot of cops that monitor Interstate 55 in Illinois.
- Children that sit behind me at baseball stadiums inevitably paw at my back after getting food on their hands.
- One of my favorite parts of a baseball road trip is running in an unfamiliar town. It’s incredibly freeing to just go outside with no idea where you’re headed and just run.
- Quad Cities has humidity similar to St. Louis. It is stifling.
Now that I’m back at home base, there’s still a lot of material to cover for Future Redbirds this week. I’ll be recounting what I saw at Quad Cities and taking a look at the third day of the draft in detail. But for the moment, I owe you a Daily Farm Report.
- An uninspiring night at the plate for Memphis as they tally just 4 hits and 1 walk.
- PJ Walters struggled through 6 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 walks for 4 runs (3 earned). He struck out 4.
- Matt Scherer pitched two scoreless innings allowing 1 hit.
- Adron Chambers was 2-for-3 with a HR.
- Antonio, DeJesus who, despite ‘The Catch’, is having a miserable year at the plate, went 1-for-3 with a longball.
- Nick Additon had a masterful outing over 7 innings striking out 8. He allowed 3 hits and walked 2 batters.
- Casey Mulligan allowed 2 hits and 2 unearned runs in an inning of work.
- Adam Reifer was stuck with the blown save allowing 3 hits and 1 walk for 2 runs in his inning of work. He struck out 1 and picked up the win as Springfield would score in the 9th to finish off Arkansas.
Quad Cities 2, West Michigan 1
- Jason Stidham and Edgar Lara, both of whom you’ll hear about later this week, went deep with solo shots in the game.
- Matt Adams was 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Michael Blazek threw 5 innings striking out 6 and walking just 1 while allowing 4 hits.
- Jorge Rondon went 3.2 IP striking out 4 and walking 2. He was tagged for 4 hits and 1 unearned run.

any update on shelby miller
@dan from fl: Last I read/heard was that he’ll pitch on the 17th. Not injury related simply giving him some time off to protect his arm and realign their rotation.
Having lived in St. Louis and now the Quad Cities, the humidity is very similar although we seem to get more breaks from it during the summer. Still doesn’t help my power bill much. I’m anxious to see what you think of Edgar Lara. About a year ago maybe two I was at a game and a guy was raving about Lara as a future star. I haven’t been able to get to a game this year but hopefully I can start making a few more as the season goes on.
Agreed on “the A team” – really surprisingly fun.
An aside, is Virgin Hill Jr. playing for anyone yet or still at EST?
Thanks azru. QC is a good running town actually. The BIX is the best road race I’ve ever run. Agreed though on running in a new city. I often times rank my cities and enjoy them based on the type of run I had there. San Francisco still #1 on my list.
you would think google would calculate the trip time as 10 mph over the speed limit by now
@azruavatar: Thanks I was concerned
@riotmute: yes Virgil is still in EST and should be on one of the short season teams roster
55 through Illinois is one long speed trap.
55 is the worst interstate I have ever traveled for cops.
On another note, anyone know why the site stopped loading as a mobile site?
Weird. As soon as I submitted the comment the page reloaded in the mobile format for the first time in a few days.
@danup: Amazingly, I was not ticketed despite a consistent 15mph over the speed limit.
@bret: It was a lot of fun. The whole area has a really nice family small town feel — if that’s your kind of thing. My run did feel like a bit of a parkour course as I was forced to dodge parked and moving cars, people, dogs and other miscellaneous obstacles. I may or may not have rolled across a hood to avoid breaking stride.
@azruavatar: Shelby is no phenom. He is going to have his work his way up the old fashioned way, with hard work.
We going to get a scouting report on some QC players today?
@rydeshelby:
Hahaha, what?!
When do we get short season rosters? Do they play games and keep real stats in EST? Would like to know how some of the guys are doing? Or is it just alot of practice?
