The system went 2-1 as Quad Cities was off today so CJ Beatty could get his toes done.

Don’t forget, Batavia starts Friday, so you are nearing the end of the regular DFRs and get ready for the DFR XL starting then.  For now, you will have to get the middle version. Ole!

Memphis 7, Nashville 5

  • Ryan Kulik went the necessary 5 innings to get the win striking out 6 and walking only 1. He allowed 2 runs on 2 home runs.
  • Andrew Brown, who I’m not sure why he is still around, gave up 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning.
  • Pete Parise stopped the bleeding after allowing Brown’s one runner to score.
  • Rich Hill and Josh Kinney finished off the game.
  • Joe Mather had two singles, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
  • Tyler Greene also had two singles.
  • Jon Jay had a 3 RBI double.

Springfield 3, Regular Arkansas 11

  • Gary Daley is back to the Gary Daley we know and loathe giving up 4 HR, 9 hits, 4 walks and 7 runs, 5 of those earned in only 4 innings.
  • Tom Eager pitched 2 shutout innings.
  • Matt Meyer, who is also in an Andrew Brown (the pitcher) situation, gave up 4 runs in 2 innings.
  • Francisco Samuel is back to pitching the 9th for Springfield, but not in the same situation the team would like this evening. He struck out two, allowing 1 walk and 1 hit.
  • Aaron Luna had a single, a double, a stolen base and an RBI.
  • Jose Garcia had 3 hits from the number 9 slot.
  • Antonio DeJesus had his first triple of the year.
  • Say what you will about errors in the minors and how they are assigned, but Peter Kozma had 3 more tonight.

Palm Beach 8, Fort Myers 5

  • Brett Zawacki gave up only 1 run in 5.1 innings, but he allowed 5 hits and walked 4. He only struck out 2.
  • Ramon Delgado got a hold while giving up 1 run, 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2 in 1.1 innings. One of these things is not like the others. He got a hold.
  • Matt Frevert got a hold even though he gave up 3 runs in 1 inning.
  • David Carpenter got the old blown save and win after coming in with the bases loaded courtesy of Frevert and allowing all three runners to score. He wasn’t credited with any runs allowed, but he did give up 3 hits.
  • Richard Racobaldo was the hitting hero going 3-5 with a HR and 4 RBIs.
  • Jared Bogany and Charles Cutler both had two hits. Cutler had a double.

    How can a guy be such a great defensive player if he makes so many errors? Doesn’t defense count making good throws also?

  2. El Hombre says:

    Any body have updates on our draft picks in the college play offs

  3. siddfynch says:

    Hey guys,

    Any plans to put together a sheet on the signing status of the draft picks? Would be a nice feature…

  4. cariocacardinal says:

    As it stands now, I think Kinney gets a September call up. They need to find out if they want to keep on the 40 mna roster over the Winter.

  5. Alex says:

    Racabaldo’s homer was a 9th inning game-winning grand slam.

  6. riotmute says:

    @cariocacardinal: It seems like Kinney has been pretty good this season. I do wonder where he stands in the organization but I would be surprised if it took until September for him to be on the big league club

  7. cariocacardinal says:

    @riotmute: That probably depends on if the Cards would go with a reliever (Kinney) to replace an injured reliever or whether they would call up a AAA starter (Ottavino/Walters/McLane) to pitch in relief in that case. Not sure what their thinking would be.

  8. azruavatar says:

    @riotmute: Kinney’s been the definition of mediocre in AAA. If the Cardinals think he has anything to offer in the majors at this point, I’m afraid they’re sadly mistaken.

  9. jjray says:

    @riotmute: The fact that Salas got the first callup for a reliever over Kinney speaks volumes.

  10. LDC says:

    With the 06 reunion going on at the big club I’m sure Kinney will be invited up in a few days. Totally underserving but hey not everybody is Aaron Miles.

  11. cariocacardinal says:

    @azruavatar: @azruavatar: They kept him on the 40 man roster over Norrick who at least has 2 options left after this where Kinney has none.

  12. kelley says:

    I agree with the comment made about the errors that Kozma continues to make. I listened to the game night before last and the announcer said that Kozma wasn’t focusing and that he should have been charged for the two errors that happened in that game instead of who got them by the scorers. Kozma should be used to AA by now and maybe he needs a wake-up call. My guess is that he will still make the all star team. Springfield seems to have a solid team, but the offense…..defense…..starters…..and relievers rarely are sink with each other. Consistency is needed.

  13. PJ says:

    Hey guys—

    An OT question I was thinking about while mowing the lawn this morning:

    Would you trade Colby Rasmus straight up for Jason Heyward today?

  14. cariocacardinal says:

    Yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

  15. cariocacardinal says:

    When Colby was 20 he was in AA. Heyward is an elite major leaguer at age 20. Plus Heyward can throw the ball accurately from the OF to the infield bases. Colby is good and may end up being very good. Heyward is good and may end up being great.

  16. PJ says:

    @cariocacardinal:

    I figured this would be the response and I am not saying I disagree whatsoever. However, Colby is having a better season—all important stats support this statement. He leads in OPS (and both OBP and SLG), Avg, HR, SB. He plays equally good defense at a more premium position.

    I would probably agree and make the trade, but I don’t think it is as much of a slam dunk as face value might lead one to believe. Factoring in age give Heyward probably the biggest advantage.

  17. PJ says:

    Next question—Jaime Garcia for Mike Leake, straight up?

  18. PJ says:

    @Birds on The Bats:

    He has plus defensive tools. Not sure what the deal is. Often, people blame a minor leaguers defensive shortcomings on 1) Poor field conditions 2) Other players not helping them out.

    I think some of Pete’s errors could have to do with these things. Perhaps a ML caliber 1B saves a couple of his throwing errors? Still, 22 is a few too many—especially midway through June.

    His offense this season has been a bit better. Maybe next year he puts it all together and we find ourselves with a ML ready SS in AAA?

  19. Lou Schuler says:

    @siddfynch: You can find that at Baseball America. It’ll probably be a while before the top picks sign. Three of the top 8 are still going in the CWS, Cox (allegedly) has big bonus demands, and Jenkins will probably want something over slot.

    A couple days after the draft, Luhnow or someone else in the Cards’ org said that 20 picks were already signed and had plane tickets to Palm Beach. None of the names have been released, but The Cardinal Nation says two of the signees are Anthony Bryant and Corderius Dodd (16th and 17th rounders, both out of high school).

    The Cards also drafted a long list of college seniors, who have no negotiating leverage. So you have to think quite a few of them have signed already and are anxious to get going.

  20. azruavatar says:

    via twitter @Dustin_Mattison: The #stlcards have signed picks Colin Walsh, Geoff Klein, Anthony Bryant, and Corderius Dodd have signed.

  21. Jeffery says:

    Texas League All-Stars:

    Gorgen, Kopp, Sanchez

    Hill, Smith, Luna-Starters

    Chambers-Reserve

  22. Tackle Box says:

    @PJ:

    The thing that worries me most about Heyward is his body relative to his age. He just looks the part of someone who’s going to put on a lot of weight in the near future and if he does, he pretty much becomes Prince Fielder.

  23. cariocacardinal says:

    @Tackle Box: Albert looks the same way but so far hasn’t put on much.

  24. pitch and hit says:

    @kelley:

    Whether you , I or anyone else likes what he does (I particularly like Kozma he’s just a work in progress and young, with very little time off) he’s the #1 money guy in Springfield and he will get many more chances than most.
    I look at it this way, many players are in milb to provide a team for the prospects. If you know the guy might make an error, as a pitcher, you better make it your biz to have better control of your game and worry about what you do, because he isn’t going anywhere soon.

  25. kelley says:

    @pitch and hit:

    I understand what you are saying and I agree. I think Kozma is a work in progress and I am sure that one day he will be in the big leagues and maybe his problem right now is the fact that he has to play every night without much rest. Kozma is talented and he makes the hard plays most of the time, but misses the easy and routine plays. I further agree that his hitting has improved and maybe next year he will bring it all together and be the guy that we want him to be. I love to win and and if I could figure out how to make all of these players consistent, I am sure that I would be rich beyond words, but this is baseball.

  26. db says:

    I wonder if some minor leaguers are getting nervous, you know with the draftees signing there is going to be some movement in all levels and some guys will be getting pink slips, so they can fill out the minors with some college guys.

  27. PJ says:

    @db:

    Not Pete Kozma….he’s safe

    I agree about some players being nervous, lots of kids will sign with the cardinals, probably more than any team (they are up to 30+ already).
    Marginal isn’t going to work for some.

    @ Lou – I’d checked out BA yesterday, and they had no updates, which I thought was odd given the early reports of quite a few Cards signings. Made me suspect there was an opening for such a product at this site, especially given how much verbal traffic there is.

    @cariocacardinal:

    I don’t get this point. Honestly, it drives me insane any time anyone uses Albert Pujols as an example. I’d think it’s obvious by now that Albert Pujols is about as uniqe an individual as you’ll ever find. Is Prince Fielder a faircomparison? Maybe not, maybe (with weight) he’d turn into Ryan Howard. Either way, those are two very good hitters and I think any team would be more than happy to have those guys (in their early 20s) in their organization.

  38. Andrew says:

    Howard and Fielder are great hitters now but people with that body type fall off quickly. Remember how bad Fielders dad Cecil got. Same thing with Mo Vaughn. No one says he cant hit now but at a certain point these type of hittesr get real bad real quick.
