Not sure why a guy like Luna is not considered a prospect. Maybe it’s the draft position, maybe the signing bonus.
Not like he came from an unknown school. Rice is a pretty good baseball club. If I remember correctly, his stats were better than Wallace when they were both at QC and didn’t he hit well last year at PB in a “pitcher’s league”? While checking out Cardinal Nation, Pop Warner said that the TL is very pitcher heavy this year, thus the lower averages from the league leaders. In looking at their stats, give me Luna’s numbers over Jones for sure. I too would be interested in why Luna hasn’t played much at 2nd.

I think there are rate stat players who numbers do not translate into count stats perfectly. JD Drew comes to mind…this group of players are often considerd dissapointing by the average fan.

I don’t think the organization looks for every player to stick with them to play with their big league club, but rather developing some players that will become more valuable for whne a trade is needed.

These guys are not just playing for the Cardinals but for 29 other teams as well.

That pic is awesome.
Happy about the much needed win for Springfield, but something just isn’t right when you have the ERA leader (Osuna gave up more runs in the game than he has all season) giving up the long ball 3 times in one game. I think they were both lifted early because it became frustrating and King has had a pretty good season to struggle like that in less than an inning. He finally opened the zone towards the end.
Umpires need to check their egos at the front gate.

@Lou Schuler: Lou, look at Luna on an AB basis and he looks different. His numbers extrapolated to 500 AB's puts him at about 28 HR and 95 RBI - pretty decent counting stats.

I agree about Luna. I was really hoping he’d stick at second base (where those numbers would translate a little better) but his conversion was apparently much worse than Schumaker’s.

He has 10 home runs this year but he’s not very big. I just don’t see him hitting for much power in the big leagues. How many fourth outfielder prospects can the big club handle?

Aaron Luna intrigues me. He has a really unusual offensive profile for a prospect — a .919 OPS (albeit in a hitter’s league), with a .425 OBP, but just 49 hits, 30 runs, and 36 RBI in 59 games. He’s a 23-year-old 2008 draftee, so his age and level seem about right.

In his favor: He has a .396 wOBA and .219 ISO. His line-drive percentage (20) is more than doubled from 2008. His BABIP is an unlucky .281.

But can he move up with a profile like that? If he’s a corner outfielder, wouldn’t he need to put more balls in play, and drive in more runs? It’s hard to imagine big-league pitchers allowing a 14% walk rate until he starts doing more damage.

I guess my question is, can a guy with great rate stats make it the majors, and succeed, without also putting up some of the counting stats? It’s not whether one is better than the other. It just looks to me like he’s a rare hitter whose statistical profile doesn’t translate to production. Or, at least, it hasn’t so far.
