Memphis and Batavia get stomped. Quad Cities suffers and error-ridden loss. Springfield losses in extras.

But hey, Palm Beach squeaked out a win!

Memphis 3, New Orleans 17

  • Joe Mather was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Jim Rapoport was 2-for-4.
  • Lance Lynn got beat up for 9 hits and 8 runs in 3.2 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 1.
  • Andrew Brown couldn’t stop the bleeding allowing 5 runs in the 5th while only recording the 3rd out of the 4th inning.
  • Pete Parise would also get touched up for 4 runs on 6 hits in an inning of work.
  • The Zephyrs hit 4 homeruns.

Springfield 7, Northwest Arkansas 8

  • Daryl Jones was 2-for-6.
  • Tyler Henley was 2-for-4 with a HR and a walk. With a 1.137 OPS in Springfield, Henley seems all healed up. I’d like to see him back in Memphis soon but there’s not a lot of opportunity for playing time there right now.
  • Aaron Luna was 2-for-5 with a HR. He’s hitting .275/.425/.494 on the season. He’s one of a number of players in the system that are showing extremely high walk rates on the season (Niko Vasquez, Matt Carpenter, Robert Stock) with a questionable overall offensive profile. Luna, as with the other players, don’t fit the archetypal description of their position despite putting up solid numbers on the season.
  • Curt Smith was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Nick Additon allowed 3 HRs on 7 hits in 5 innings for 4 ER. He walked 1 while striking out 4.
  • Casey Mulligan struggled again allowing 4 hits and 3 runs in 1 inning of work. He struck out 1.
  • Eduardo Sanchez, returning from an ankle sprain, pitched a perfect inning striking out 1.
  • Blake King allowed the winning run after walking 4 and striking out 2 in 1.2 innings of work.

Palm Beach 4, St. Lucie 3

  • Colt Sedbrook was 1-for-3 with a HR.
  • Alex Castellanos also went 1-for-4 with a HR.
  • Jared Bogany was 2-for-3 with a triple.
  • Scott McGregor went 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 1.
  • Tyler Norrick and David Carpenter both went 1.1 innings striking out 3 apiece.

Quad Cities 2, Peoria 7

Batavia 0, Auburn 12

  • Welcome to the start of the Batavia season. You have a -12 run differential. Enjoy your stay.
  • Nick Longmire playing CF was 1-for-4.
  • John Edwards was 0-for-1 with a pair of walks. Edwards is now 22.
  • Really just an ugly pitching boxscore; enter at your own risk.

If I were Edwards I might start getting worried. But then again he was drafted out of HS just like Joe Mather and look how long they stuck with Joe Mather. The guy is 6-5 230 so I really don’t expect them just to clear him out. Still probally has another 3 or 4 years to develope.

In 2008 he hit for a .302 avg at Bat and a .269 avg at Quad Cities. However last year was a complete bust for him.

Was at the game in the Quad Cities. Nice day for baseball, it wasn’t very good baseball though. Alot of errors, not very good hitting by QC and while Fortando only gave up 2er he didn’t help himself out either walking guys and giving up hits after someone had made an error early in the inning. Stock is alot smaller than I thought, he has a pretty good arm.

On a side note, I like the Chiefs park but there are just some things that bug me. After each time the Chiefs score, the stupid 6 flags music comes on and a female and male cornsuit comes out and dances in center field and the first 3 runs they spent too much time out there and really help up the pitcher and the game. It’s funny and amusing but gets to be too much after a few runs. Also the mascot Homer a fire dog does this skit where he walks out between innings tried to figure out what he wants to do with a Pujols jersey eventually sets it down and pretends to pee on it. Guess he thinks the fans forgot that Pujols was a Peoria Chief. It’s a common theme with the dog pretending to pee on things. The taped seven innings stretch of Harry Carey is a nice touch. They also played the Cubs song after a Chiefs win. Overall its a fun atmosphere in the park just wish they wouldn’t forget that alot of the fans in the Peoria area are probably Cardinal fans.

Az, I know you said you had a favorable impression of Stock but he just doesn’t belong in that group — he is OPSing less than .600 while the other 3 are all above .850. A HUGE difference.

  4. pitch and hit says:

cariocacardinal, what’s your impression on Lynn, he seems to be struggling at times, is he too young, did they push him up to quickly?
Despite the outcome and who they played, Additon had a good outing. Too many runs scored again means the zone was tight.
Thank goodness Sanchez has returned, the bullpen needed some help bigtime.

I will be curious to see what Longmire can do from our 2010 draft. He was a guy I was fairly excited about that no one really talked about from the draft.

  6. easy says:

Eeeew, ugly night on the farm! I am worried that Lynn has reached his level of incompetence. We need starters now and next year and he won’t be in the equation if he doesn’t turn it around.
I also am intrigued by what we know about Longmire. Sounds like he has some potential that wasn’t fully tapped in college. Need to sign those top draft choices!

  7. azruavatar says:

@cariocacardinal: You’re right in that his overall offense is well below the others. He does have a nearly 15% walk rate, however, and in that regard, he fits in well.

  8. cariocacardinal says:

@pitch and hit: @easy: I dont know if I’d say Lynn was pushed too quickly. It’s all about learning and adapting and so far he is not doing that too quickly at AAA. When a player is pushed quickly sometimes their adaptation time is longer. Hopefully Lynn will learn and adapt but I dont think we’ll know for sure until next year.

  9. shaneo69 says:

19 errors now for the best defensive player in our system. Speaking of shortstops, Kozma hitting .146 in his last 10 games…

  10. Franklin says:

    @cariocacardinal:

Pretty sure AZ’s been preaching this, but it seems any chance Lynn has for success comes down to his command and control. I know this is far from news, but his walk rate has not made any progress so far this season, and I’m having a tough time finding any successful ML comp with his combination of fringey stuff and command who has had any success at the major league level. A few close to home names that came to mind:

    Jeff Suppan-2.3 bb/9 and 8.3 k/9 in his age 23 AAA season.
    Kyle Lohse-1.8 bb/9 and 8.3 k/9 in his age 23 AA/AAA season.

I guess I think of those as Lynn’s ceiling if he can gain control, but it was a couple of slightly further from home MLers that had more similar starts to their careers:

    Doug Davis-3.8 bb/9 8.6 k/9 (milb career)
    Kyle Davies-3.2 bb/9 8.7 k/9 (milb career)

  11. bc says:

    @Franklin:

I guess it depends on your definition of “any success” for Lynn. Suppan, Lohse, Davis, and Davies are about what I’ve always thought Lynn was – a ML 4th starter-ish guy. That’s fine (and valuable). Shit, teams have signed Suppan, Lohse, and Davis for $40mm and $20mm+ multiyear contracts. I’d prefer we get analogous cost-controlled performance out of Lynn.

  12. pitch and hit says:

Thanks for the responses. I like Lynn, been watching him since college.
I am wondering if his walk rate is high because they make him pitch inside and low, predominately FB and sliders?
I just think he is young, was rushed up to AA and couldn’t repeat it. I personally like seeing guys in one full season of high A, AA and AAA unless they are phenoms and needed on the big team.

  13. Vision says:

I guess I’ve never seen what people see in Lynn. He’s a big kid, who has a frame that people think would be an innings eater, but he’s not even that. He has fringey stuff, a high walk rate, a low K rate, and is supposed to be fairly polished.

When I’ve watched him, I’ve thought of the football phrase “Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.” He nibbles way too much, and seems almost afraid to throw too many strikes, for fear of a neck strain.

He’s probably going to be a major leaguer in the back of the rotation, so he does have some value, but he’s not someone to be especially excited about IMHO.

  14. Forsch31 says:

According to Cardinal Nation at Scout.com, Scott Schneider has been promoted to Palm Beach. Not official yet.

  15. Franklin says:

    @bc:

I realize I’m oversimplifying his case by looking at it from only a strikeout and walk perspective, but the point those comparisons were supposed to make was that he’s not on par with Suppan or Lohse, but maybe Davies or Davis. Davies is pretty awful and has no place on a competing team, but yes Davis is a back of the rotation innings eater. If Davis is what Lynn becomes I’d be okay with that, but it’s not what I want to see the FO get into the habit of drafting so early.
