@bc: I realize I'm oversimplifying his case by looking at it from only a strikeout and walk perspective, but the point those comparisons were supposed to make was that he's not on par with Suppan or Lohse, but maybe Davies or Davis. Davies is pretty awful and has no place on a competing team, but yes Davis is a back of the rotation innings eater. If Davis is what Lynn becomes I'd be okay with that, but it's not what I want to see the FO get into the habit of drafting so early.

I guess I’ve never seen what people see in Lynn. He’s a big kid, who has a frame that people think would be an innings eater, but he’s not even that. He has fringey stuff, a high walk rate, a low K rate, and is supposed to be fairly polished.

When I’ve watched him, I’ve thought of the football phrase “Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.” He nibbles way too much, and seems almost afraid to throw too many strikes, for fear of a neck strain.

He’s probably going to be a major leaguer in the back of the rotation, so he does have some value, but he’s not someone to be especially excited about IMHO.

Thanks for the responses. I like Lynn, been watching him since college.
I am wondering if his walk rate is high because they make him pitch inside and low, predominately FB and sliders?
I just think he is young, was rushed up to AA and couldn’t repeat it. I personally like seeing guys in one full season of high A, AA and AAA unless they are phenoms and needed on the big team.

@Franklin: I guess it depends on your definition of "any success" for Lynn. Suppan, Lohse, Davis, and Davies are about what I've always thought Lynn was - a ML 4th starter-ish guy. That's fine (and valuable). Shit, teams have signed Suppan, Lohse, and Davis for $40mm and $20mm+ multiyear contracts. I'd prefer we get analogous cost-controlled performance out of Lynn.

Pretty sure AZ’s been preaching this, but it seems any chance Lynn has for success comes down to his command and control. I know this is far from news, but his walk rate has not made any progress so far this season, and I’m having a tough time finding any successful ML comp with his combination of fringey stuff and command who has had any success at the major league level. A few close to home names that came to mind:

Jeff Suppan-2.3 bb/9 and 8.3 k/9 in his age 23 AAA season.
Kyle Lohse-1.8 bb/9 and 8.3 k/9 in his age 23 AA/AAA season.

I guess I think of those as Lynn’s ceiling if he can gain control, but it was a couple of slightly further from home MLers that had more similar starts to their careers:

Doug Davis-3.8 bb/9 8.6 k/9 (milb career)
Kyle Davies-3.2 bb/9 8.7 k/9 (milb career)

@pitch and hit: @easy: I dont know if I'd say Lynn was pushed too quickly. It's all about learning and adapting and so far he is not doing that too quickly at AAA. When a player is pushed quickly sometimes their adaptation time is longer. Hopefully Lynn will learn and adapt but I dont think we'll know for sure until next year.

@cariocacardinal: You're right in that his overall offense is well below the others. He does have a nearly 15% walk rate, however, and in that regard, he fits in well.

Eeeew, ugly night on the farm! I am worried that Lynn has reached his level of incompetence. We need starters now and next year and he won’t be in the equation if he doesn’t turn it around.
I also am intrigued by what we know about Longmire. Sounds like he has some potential that wasn’t fully tapped in college. Need to sign those top draft choices!
