- Jon Jay was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Bryan Anderson was 2-for-3 with a walk. Those of you keeping track at home, his OPS has now cracked .800. Check back on Thursday for a closer look at Anderson.
- PJ Walters struggled through 5 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 2 and got tagged for 4 ER.
Springfield 7, Northwest Arkansas 6
- Pete Kozma(naut) showing signs of coming out of his hitting funk. He went 3-for-5 with a double and a HR. I can’t wait to see his swing again. Word is it’s completely revamped from the draft.
- Curt Smith was 2-for-5.
- Antonio DeJesus was 2-for-4.
- A solid outing for Ryan Kulik who went 7.1 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks for 3 runs (2 earned). He struck out 2.
- Adam Reifer finished off the 8th allowing 2 hits and 1 ER.
- Eduardo Sanchez picked up the save with a scoreless, 1 hit 9th.
- Xavier Scruggs was 3-for-4 with a HR. Scruggs has 11 HRs in 200 ABs.
- Tommy Pham was 0-for-2 with 2 walks.
- Brett Zawacki took a thawacking. Robots can rhyme too. He was touched up for 12 hits in 7 innings leading to 5 runs (4 earned). He struck out 4 and walked 2. As further sign that things weren’t working for Zawacki he allowed more flyouts than groundouts.
- Michael Swinson was 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Devin Goodwin was 2-for-3.
- QC tallied just 4 hits and a pair of walks for the entirety of their offense.
- Joe Kelly lasted just two innings. He was undone by some shaky command and three errors in the field behind him. Kelly allowed 2 hits and 3 walks for 5 runs (2 earned). He struck out 2. Kelly continues to offer a nice combination of strikeouts and groundballs. That’s a recipe for success if he can keep it up moving forward.
- Chris Notti got lit up for 6 runs on 7 hits. He retired one batter.
- Joey Bergman, 2B, goes 2-for-4 with a double. Check back tomorrow for more info on the Day 3 draftees including Bergman.
- Victor Sanchez, 1B, was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- John Edwards continues to preach it (first and last sermon pun for 2010 from me) with 3-for-5 effort including a pair of doubles.
- Matt North went south (I CAN’T HELP MYSELF!) getting hit hard for 6 runs on 3 walks and 5 hits while retiring just 4 batters.
- Anthony Ferrara pitched 5 innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 4.

Nice story from Quad Cities, The game was long and oppressively hot, the best action happened before the game. I wanted Shelby Miller, Deryk Hooker, Eric Fontano and Ryan Jackson throw bullpens. Obviously Jacksons wasn’t official but he looked good on the mound. I believe he hung out with the relievers for the whole game. First, the team was in high spirits today as they clinched a playoff spot last night with the win. When I came to the park the majority of the members of the team had used the eye black material to make mustaches on themselves it really was quite funny. Beatty had a Rollie Fingers handlebar mustache, Ivan Castro had the funmanchu mustache. Various others had different looking mustaches pretty much no too were the same. During Millers bullpen he was working almost exclusively on 2 new pitches. Both were pretty impressive. He really seems like a good guy, a fan with a little 6 year old girl asked me who was that was and I told him Shelby Miller. At the end of the bullpen the man asked if he could sign the ball for his little girl and he said yes, right at that time the pitching coach intercepted him and talked to him for a few minutes about the bullpen session. After this Miller turned back around and walked back to the little girl and signed her ball. He didn’t have to and had kind of wondered away at that point but he did anyway. It was a real nice thing to do. After this he shook another fans hand and mine before walking back to the dugout. Along with this he stayed for about 5 minutes signing autographs for kid (and autograph hounds, I hate these guys) the previous day. Ryan Jackson asked the pitching coach if he could throw off the mound and was told to go ask the coach. Apparently he got a yes as Matt Adams caught his unoffical session. The team didn’t play very well during the game. Kelly didn’t have much control and also suffered from quite a few misplays by his defense including Edgar Lara’s what seemed like 3 errors. Granted Kelly didn’t help himself either walking a bunch of people and giving up some hard contact. Justin Smith did much better and pretty much held the game to the previous score until the 7th when I left. After watching all 3 games I really think that Michael Swinson is the best position player prospect on the team. He led off hit some balls very hard and he is probably the fastest runner I’ve seen in person. I’m very impressed with him. On a side note the River Bandits played against some very good prospects. They have 2 guys that signed from Korea in 08, and a lefty from the Dominican that throws hard. All the pitchers did well against Aramis Ramirez pretty much throwing heat past them, so that shows they have big league fastballs. Thats all I can think of if anyone has any questions about individuals feel free to ask me on here.
BTW I want to be the first to say I want to see Ferrera in the Quad Cities rotation soon. He did well in Batavia last year, he’sprobably the best LHP prospect in our system. With the movement of one of our top SP in QC opens up a space for Ferrera.
@Andrew: Ferrera pitched at Johnson City in 2009.
Ahhh ok so this is th enext logical spot in his development. He did well last night.
It looks like Michael Blazek has been promoted to Palm Beach. Kind of a surprising move, as I thought Fornataro, Kelly, or Hooker would be moved up before Blazek.
@Grant:
Other Moves:
Chuckie Fick to Memphis
David Kopp to Memphis
Ryan Kulik to Springfield
Mark Diapoules to Springfield
Scott McGregor to Springfield
Anyone know the corresponding moves at Memphis? I assume Andrew Brown will be released….
@bookerd: Kulik down, Scherer to the DL. Mulligan has also been placed on the DL at Springfield.
@Grant:
I actually thought it would be Justin Smith or Hooker. Smith has been lights out out of the bullpen, while Hooker has probably been the best starter not named Schneider.
Excited to see how Kopp does. I’ve always liked him and he has great stuff. If healthy, I think he can make a case as a big time prospect
Not sure if these are permenant moves but pretty sure to cover double header on wednesday in Memphis. To move up Kopp/Fick you have to move the corresponding pitchers who follow the rotation and down the line. Plus, this might cover those players going to Future Game. I’ll bet Fick gets a start in one game and Kopp another to allow rest and releif.
Not sure if Mulligan is really hurt or they had to make room.
What appears as a promotion may just be temporary to help the system.
Who is going to take part in the Future Game? I think Fick is going to Memphis to be in the bullpen while Kopp will get a start. I hope the changes stick as the pitchers moved have been very successful and deserve a shot at the next level.
@Andrew:
I’d put my money on Eduardo Sanchez for the Futures Game.
Do we have any position player that could qualify? Jon Jay? I know last year Francisco Samuel got on only because another reliever got hurt and he took his position. Honestly this year Sanchez has been hurt alot of the year. Maybe Reifer deserves it more this year? I would like to see Kopp in there.
