• Nick Longmire has started off red hot for Batavia hitting .500.  Alert the HPGF alarms!
  • Erik will be substituting for me tomorrow night as I’m in the process of moving and will be without the life giving blood of an internet connection. I’m leaving work for all of you, so I expect you to behave and not shoot spitballs at him or put tacks on his chair.

DFR!

Memphis 1, New Orleans 2

  • Brandon Dickson was the hard luck loser this afternoon, allowing the 2 runs in 7 innings. He walked 0 and struck out 6. As long as he can keep his astonishingly low strikeout rate down, his strikeout rate looks great.
  • Oneli Perez finished the game with two shutout innings.
  • Joe Mather and Ruben Gotay each had two hits.
  • Matt Pagnozzi had the only extra base hit.

Springfield 11, Arkansas 4

Palm Beach 1, Fort Myers 0 (7 innings – Game 1)

  • Richard Castillo pitched a gem for Palm Beach getting around 4 errors to pitch 7 shutout innings. He struck out 4 and walked two all while only allowing 2 hits on the afternoon.
  • Domnit Bolivar had the winning run on a double, moved over on a sacrifice and a throwing error. He had two hits.
  • Alex Castellanos also had two hits and a stolen base.

Palm Beach 12, Fort Myers 1 (7 innings – Game 2)

  • Kevin Thomas started for Palm Beach, probably only because it was a double header as he hasn’t started much for PB. Anyhow, he did well with the opportunity striking out 6 and walked 1 over 5 innings. He allowed 5 hits and 1 run.
  • Joel Pichardo and David Carpenter finished the blowout.
  • Chris Swauger was the hitting hero with two doubles and a single.
  • Domnit Bolivar had another good game with a 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBIs.
  • Oliver Marmol was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs.

Quad Cities was off.

Batavia 7, State College 8

  • Nick McCully only gave up 2 runs in 5 innings while striking out 6 and walking 0.
  • Houston Summers appears to be a rare Batavia minor league free agent and he did not acquit himself well with 3 runs in 2 innings an the Blown Save.
  • David Kington got the double whammy of the loss and another Blown Save.
  • The hitting hero of the night was 2010 5th round draftee, Nicholas Longmire (mentioned above). He was a double away from the cycle going 4-5 with two singles and 4 RBIs. Longmire even added a stolen base.
  • Yunier Castillo had 2 hits.
  • Joseph Bergman added a double.

Not sure if it was you or Erik but are we ever going to get your scouting report from your Quad Cities games 2 weekends ago? I believe you said that Hooker was probably the only guy that impressed you. Would like to see what you thought of him and Schneider.

  2. Vallon says:

From what i noticed today it looks like

Diapoules and Mcgregor were promoted to Springfield

    Schneider promoted to Palm Beach

    Russell to Batavia.

Off topic but i saw Moustakas play the other day for NW Arkansas, and he is sick mate

@Andrew: It was me. And I’m going to post that on Wednesday — and block your IP from reading it !!!

No but seriously, I uploaded all my photos and started the draft this weekend. I think we’re going to have an afternoon post every day this week. I can’t remember the last time that happened.

  4. Andrew says:

I’m more interested in the reports than the pictures as I saw most of the guys up close and personal this weekend :) 5 feet away from Shelby Millers bullpen and got to shake his hand :) Love that in Peoria the bullpen is right next to the fans.

Stud alert…..Longmire may be very talented.

@Vallon: Yea, I got to see the Sunday Cardinals vs. Naturals game.. I think Moustakas has great power and is a good hitter, but breaking balls early in the count had him off balance and made him look silly. BUT, if you throw him a fastball, he will hit it a LONG way..

I meant to share a little bit of what I saw on Sunday in the DFR, but it looks like I’m a day late so I’m just going to post it in the most recent DFR. These are a few of the guys who stood out, but feel free to reply and ask me about a specific player and I’ll try to post what I can remember.

Pete Kozma – IMO, Kozma was the best player on the field. He looked good fielding grounders in warmups, and he wasn’t really tested much in the game, but he showed great range and a strong, accurate arm. I will preface this by saying, I’m not good at analyzing swings and approaches at the plater, but from what I could tell Kozma had a compact swing that generates good bat speed and he centered the ball very well which allowed him to hit everything hard. He led off the game with a rocket double that almost went out in deep CF, his next AB he hit an absolute bomb of a HR (for those that have been to Arvest Ballpark where the Naturals play, his HR landed up near the inflatables in LF). His next hit was a single and I thought he was going to hit for the cycle on the day but his next two AB’s were VERY sharp groundballs to third and SS respectively. He almost beat out the grounder to short and also showed great speed by getting to a few balls in the hole at short. All in all, I see no reason why Kozma can’t be a very solid SS for us in the future. He may be coming along slowly, but I think patience is key here as the more time he has to develop, the better off he will be.

Adron Chambers – He kinda came out of nowhere as I wasn’t expecting to hear much from Chambers, but he looked solid at the plate. He had a double down the LF line for his only hit but he legged out a grounder to avoid a DP and forced a quick throw on another grounder from the SS which resulted in an error. I was most impressed with Chambers in LF, as he showed good range and a GREAT arm. He almost hosed a guy trying to stretch a single into a double and later in the game he did hose a guy who looked like he had an easy double out of the box, but Chambers had him out by 2-3 steps at 2B. It looks like he has the tools and if he can manage to translate that into success, he could be at least a 4th outfielder.

Ryan Kulik – he wasn’t overly impressive, but he mixed pitches well and kept hitters of balance. His FB sat in the high 80′s, he touched the low 90′s a few times but seemed to lose command when he did that. He got a lot of groundballs, but his command was a bit shaky and he got himself in a bit of trouble by walking/hitting a few batters and it always seemed like there were 2-3 balls to each batter. Either way, he went 7 strong innings and looked solid, but I don’t see him as anything more than a minor-league innings eater.

Eduardo Sanchez – he made a few guys look silly with his mid-high 90′s fastball (I saw it at 93-96), and he had great command of his curveball which looked to be breaking quit a bit and was a huge change of pace off his fastball. A few guys hit the ball hard off of him, but they ended up being right at OF’s so Sanchez was able to keep runners off base. He looked like a guy with two great pitches who will be able to handle a high-leverage role out of the bullpen in the future.

Antonio Dejesus – he looked okay at the plate and ended up with a hit or two, but I don’t see him being a guy who can hit at the MLB level. I know we’ve all heard about his defense, but if you’re tired of hearing about it then you should stop reading now because I have nothing but glowing reviews. His speed was very good as he stole a base and covered alot of ground in CF, so that was a bright spot. He nearly robbed a guy of at least a double as he scaled the wall but couldn’t come down with it. He had one of the best catches by an OF that I’ve ever seen live as a liner was hit over his head that he had no business catching, but he chased it down and made a backwards-sliding catch while somehow coming up with the ball over his shoulder. The catch saved two runs and the entire stadium gave him a standing ovation. If he can ever figure it out at the plate, he will be a solid player.

Those were the guys who stood out to me, but there were several other guys who made an impact. Henley and Luna both had hits, but they weren’t overly impressive to me. Matt Carpenter was hitting in the 3-hole and had a double, but he looked confused against the Naturals lefty pitcher as he struck out looking twice, so his approach could use some work. He also needs to add some serious weight as he looked very skinny, which might explain his lack of power at this point in time. Like I said, I saw the whole game so if you guys have any questions, just respond back and I’ll try to give you what I can remember..

  7. db says:

Does anybody know anything about Willy Paulino in the DSL for STL. He is a pitcher and just turned 20. He has yet to give up a run. He has pitched 21 innings so far this year with a run scored. Thought that was impressive and deserved mention.

Looks like Diapoules had a decent start for Springfield.

  8. Steve Zimmerman says:

How soon can we make room for Blake Hawksworth on any one of those minor league teams? This guy hasn’t learned to pitch and the big league club is no place for him to learn.

  9. jjray says:

@jws003: Chambers was playing LF? I just checked the box score and saw that DJ was in CF. How did DJ look in CF? I assume Chamber is more of a natural CF’er but they are playing DJ in center to see how he fares there.

  10. jws003 says:

@jjray: Chambers was in LF, Dejesus was in CF, Henley in RF and the DH was Luna. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Jones..

  11. giveml says:

with Kopp and Fick promoted to Memphis, what corresponding roster moves should we expect?

  12. cariocacardinal says:

@giveml: The daisy chained is laid out in the 6/20 DFR.

  13. Andrew says:

He’s actually done fairly well at times this year and last. He seems to have been effected by the groin strain and hasn’t really been put in too many situations where a positive outcome is likely such as coming out for the 3rd inning on Sunday or having the emergency bullpen start.

  14. Andrew says:

I forgot to say he has no options left so he wont be sent back down to the minors. I believe Bernie or Strauss talked about the Cardinals having a dilemna with him because he’s such a well liked guy in the clubhouse. I really thought he should have been put on the DL earlier in the year and allowed to rehab in AAA.

  15. cariocacardinal says:

@Andrew: Hmmm….I assume you are talking about HAwksworth but I can see know where in this thread where you mention him. Mixed up on your threads? Mixed up on your sites? I know I’ve done that before :)

  16. Grant says:

According to the Post-Dispatch, Eduardo Sanchez and Shelby Miller have been selected for the Futures Game.

  17. Andrew says:

Too much Cardinal baseball talk I think lol…….yea I think this was meant for another site, someone wanting Hawksworth to be demoted and learn to pitch.

  18. PJ says:

Miller and Sanchez to th Futures Game—says Dan and AL

  19. Andrew says:

I thought I saw somewhere that Alex Castellanos was released?
