SS: “Joy to watch”, “plus-plus fielder”, “major league shortstop today”… “nothing much to see at the plate”, “Gap power is his ceiling”……………????? Since when are shortstops required to be HR hitter or power hitters….you can’t have both…name one. Rarely do you see this fielding talent in a SS….STL should take it before someone else does.

I was exhausted when Smith came into the game on Friday night — though I remember looking up his stats later that night with a bit of surprise. It was absurdly hot and humid. I didn’t do much beyond watch his outing and I don’t have any notes on him or Terry from the weekend.

Also curious about Terry. Pitched on the 11th and 12th of your visit (2 innings and 4 K’s). His last 10 games are 10.1 IP 5H 2BB 18K 0HR.

Justin Smith made no impression on you? He has 47 K’s in 40 innings after tonight (12 BB, 1HR allowed). I believe you would have seen him on the 11th when he struck out 4 in 2 innings.

@cariocacardinal: His defense was ugly. He's extremely slow - something like a 35-40 runner. He's a non-prospect to me because not only is his defense limited but his offense isn't of the well rounded variety. He needs to close some holes in his swing to be a more complete offensive player -- I don't think he'll make those changes though. He has exactly one strength and that's hitting for power.

Az, do you consider Lara a totally non-prospect due to his defensive limitations? Is he enough of an athlete he can be cured?
