Springfield’s game was postponed.

A good night for the org as the remaining teams go 4-1.

Memphis 15, Albuquerque 3

  • Jon Jay was 3-for-5 with a HR.
  • Daniel Descalso was 3-for-5 with a double. There was some talk of Descalso as an option to get some playing time this season. While I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come September, Descalso hasn’t lit the world on fire in Memphis like he did during his time in Springfield. Descalso may yet be an option at second but it’s not this season and probably not next.
  • Allen Craig was 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of HRs and a walk.
  • Joe Mather and Bryan Anderson were both 2-for-5 with a walk. Joey hit a bomb.
  • Evan MacLane went 7 innings allowing 8 hits and just 2 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 1.

Palm Beach 3, Chattanooga 0

  • Tommy Pham was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Palm Beach managed a win despite a lot of Ks at the plate. 14 to be exact.
  • Kevin Thomas struck out 3 in 6 innings allowing just 3 hits.
  • Trey Hearne, organizational warrior, pitched 3 innings striking out 3 and allowing just 1 hit.

Quad Cities 4, Kane County 3 (16 innings)

  • D’Marcus Ingram was 2-for-6 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • Ryan Jackson was 3-for-6 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • Niko Vasquez went yard for his only hit in 8 trips to the plate. He walked twice.
  • Matt Adams was 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Despite receiving 8 chances in some cases, no one managed a golden sombrero.
  • Shelby Miller got the start tossing 3 innings allowing 2 walks and 2 hits for 1 ER. He struck out 4.
  • Justin Smith struck out 8 in 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 ER.
  • Chris Notti struck out 6 and walked 1 in 3 innings of work. He allowed 3 hits.
  • You’re winning pitcher who tossed a scoreless 16th? Edgar Lara. Yes, 1B Edgar Lara picked up the win walking three in a hitless 16th.

Batavia 2, State College 4 (10 inning)

  • Nick Longmire was 2-for-4 with a triple.
  • Nick McCully struck out 3 and walked 2 allowing 2 hits in 4 scoreless innings.

Johnson City 3, Greeneville 2

  • Greg Garcia, 2B, was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Chris Edmondson, LF, went yard.
  • Patrick Elkins, 3B, was 2-for-3.
  • Hector Hernandez struck out 3 and walked 1 with the only run allowed on a solo HR among four hits.
  • Ryan Copeland struck out 4 in 2.2IP. He allowed a hit and walked 1.
  • Hector Corpas picked up his second save striking out 1 in 1.1IP.

That was weird I was watching KSDK and they were mentioning Descalso and how great he was doing this year. Was that discussion just from a annoucer or do they get cues from the team to start mentioning players in the minors?

  2. Kyle says:

Has anyone head anything on the status of Tyler Bighames? It was my understanding that he had already served his 50 game suspension with QC, though I could be wrong. I have not seen his name in any box score yet.

  3. Memphis25 says:

Evan MacLane done a great job tonight of keeping the ball on the ground with the winds blowing out to left at 35 MPH tonight at Isotopes park. He needed this good outing after getting roughed up in 3 of 4 starts this month.

  4. Andrew says:

He’s in GCL but hasn’t played yet. Maybe getting reacquainted with baseball activity again?

  5. Lou Schuler says:

@Andrew: That’s a good question, Andrew, although I doubt if any of us will know the answer. Descalso has been hitting third much of the year for Memphis, which, given how stacked that lineup is, shows some faith in his ability to make solid contact.

His walk rate is higher than his K rate (both are improved from previous years), and because he’s in the middle of the lineup, he has some nice counting stats (50 R and 53 RBI in 75 games). His BABIP is .295, suggesting he’s hitting into a little bad luck but not a lot. His LD rate of 17% looks like it’s in line with his career averages.

When Schumaker’s contract ends, Descalso will be 25, and presumably in his baseball prime. But who knows? Maybe he’ll get his shot before then.

  6. riotmute says:

At what point do we see Jay or Craig back in the big leagues? Either would aid a very sad bench

  7. Andrew says:

Craig did nothing as a bench player before..the bench will be decent when it’s best player…Lopez or Winn can actually play the bench rather than spot starting for Ryan or a injured player.

  8. cflood says:

Descalso may not be tearing it up but he has 52 RBI’s. It would be nice to have a player or two on the big club with that many.

  9. jws003 says:

When are they going to start taking off the kid gloves with Miller? He hasn’t gone more than 3 innings in his past four outings, and in the last ten outings he has only gone over 5 innings, ONCE. I’m all for bringing him along slowly and saving his arm, but what can anybody tell about his projection as a starting pitcher if he is pitching 2-3 innings per game?

  10. Andrew says:

They are working on 2 new pitches for him. No need to have him throwing 80 pitches when the outcome of the game isn’t the most important thing for him right now. What’s important is him learning how to pitch and not just throw and learning the curveball and changeup he was just taught during his time off.

  11. dk says:

@jws003: I agree with Andrew. I think it’s more important that he learn to pitch and work on developing his pitches right now. I’m not bothered or worried about his lack of innings in games. I’m sure he’s gotten his fair share of pitches with all the bullpen sessions he’s thrown. I’m glad that they are taking the time to teach him how to pitch and helping him develop his pitches, instead of throwing him to the wolves and forcing him to pitch when poor results could potentially hamper his development. The last thing this organization wants is to produce another Ankiel. I’m sure that by the last month of the season, they’ll increase the innings and let him show what he’s learned and what he can do. That way they’ll be able to evaluate what he needs to work on in the off season in order to come in next spring and be prepared for a full season’s work load at Palm Beach.

  12. VolsnCards5 says:

wait, he was taught a curve during his time off? i thought that was his calling card in highschool?

  13. dk says:

@VolsnCards5: looks like the curve has been there since HS, it just needs some work. He was known for his slider and FB before he was drafted. It looks like he’s been working mostly on a change-up and probably the control of his curve.

  14. Vallon says:

MlbTradeRumors.com mention the Cardinals as the “mystery team” involved in scouting Cliff Lee and it is mentioned that Shelby Miller would be the idea “trade chip”

I pray to sweet JEsus thats not the case. I hate expensive rental players-(Im look at you Mark Mulder)

  15. Andrew says:

He was taught a curveball and a changeup. At least a new way to through a curve. I know this because I watched him and his pitching coach work on it almost exclusively in a bullpen session.

  16. Andrew says:

Vallon- Miller can’t even be traded into he is with the organization for a year. That isn’t until the signing deadline this year. The only, only way this happens is if its a guy who we already have a long term deal worked out with as Lee has already said hes going to the highest bidder after the year. I dont think we are goign to sign a pitcher to a long term high priced contract again until we do it with Waino.

  17. azruavatar says:

@Andrew: I don’t believe it’s a year from signing but rather a year from draft day. Miller is a movable commodity.

  18. Andrew says:

Well, that kind of worries me then. lol I really don’t think the Cardinals would be foolish enough to trade Miller for 2 months of Lee when he’s just going to go to the highest bidder next year which wont and can’t be us if we sign AP.

  19. Franklin says:

    @Andrew:

Couldn’t Miller be traded as a PTBNL anyway? And based on the trades of ’09 it’s hard to believe Mo would be overly hesitant to make this kind of a deal. A trade for a rental who is willing to walk at season’s end, but comes with with compensatory picks, and in a stronger draft class.

  20. Andrew says:

Even with 2 picks next year at the bottom of the first round won’t get us a talent like Miller. We were lucky he dropped to 19 the year we drafted him. The difference is that we had the money to resign Holliday. It is highly unlikely that we have the money to resign Lee if we ant to keep Albert.

  21. dk says:

@azruavatar: wasn’t the Walrus traded before his 1 year signing anniversary? I think you’re right, robot.

  22. azruavatar says:

@dk: He was traded on July 24th so yes.

  23. Franklin says:

    @Andrew:

Yes, we were incredibly fortunate to have Miller fall to us in the draft, just as we were lucky to have Cox drop this year. It’s impossible to say whether or not the two compensation picks would atone for the loss of Miller until years after the draft.

If the front office were to make this rumored trade they may do it without any intention to sign Lee for next season. The question would then be, is the addition of Cliff Lee, a first* round pick, and a first supplemental round pick worth Shelby Miller and ~$4.5 million. Using compensation picks to pad for the loss of prospects is a strategy Mo has used before, and I’m not so sure it’s a bad one. It’s a hell of a lot less costly and risky than signing top tier free agents.

*Assuming Lee signs with a top 15 team in the offseason.

  24. cariocacardinal says:

@azruavatar: Wallace signed on July 1st so he was not traded lass than one year after his signing date. I am almost positive it is the signing date and not the draft date as some players are not drafted so it is a rule that applies to NDFA’s also.

  25. JC says:

@cariocacardinal: @azruavatar: It is a year from signing. So for Miller to be dealt he would have to be a PTBNL.

  26. Vallon says:

It looks like the Mariners are looking almost exclusively for young promising hitters rather than pitchers, im not really sure who we have that is promising enough to trade for anyway. I remember reading that the Mariners would want Ike Davis from the Mets or Justin Smoak from the Rangers if any deal happened

On another note it looks like Carlos Matias has struck out 11 guys today and got the loss! Pretty awesome 9 innings 2 ER 11k

  27. Andrew says:

I think someone said this was probably a continuation from the game on the 22nd that was rained out. He pitched 3 innigns that day, none the less very impresive. I know Craig isn’t in the same breath as Davis or Smoak but maybe a package of Craig, Anderson and Jones gets it done. The first two of those three come probably immediately start for the M’s.

  28. nmstar says:

@Andrew: Don’t think that would get it done. None of those guys has the ceiling of say the #30 pick plus a supplemental pick.

  29. jjray says:

@nmstar: True but if the deal were consummated at the AS break, it means the Cards eat half of Lee’s salary for the season. That’s $4.5M. Not huge dollars but not chump change. Craig, Anderson, and Lynn (or Salas) would have to at least interest them. Everybody needs cheap young pitching.

    >>None of those guys has the ceiling of say the #30 pick plus a supplemental pick.<<

Again, true but the Cards offer major league ready prospects. Draft picks with higher ceilings come with (a) the expense of signing them, (b) the wait for them to move through the minor league system, and (c) the risk they get hurt or never live up to their potential. These factors degrade the market value of the picks.
