@nmstar: True but if the deal were consummated at the AS break, it means the Cards eat half of Lee's salary for the season. That's $4.5M. Not huge dollars but not chump change. Craig, Anderson, and Lynn (or Salas) would have to at least interest them. Draft picks with higher ceilings come with (a) the expense of signing them, (b) the wait for them to move through the minor league system, and (c) the risk they get hurt or never live up to their potential. These factors degrade the market value of the picks.

I think someone said this was probably a continuation from the game on the 22nd that was rained out. He pitched 3 innigns that day, none the less very impresive. I know Craig isn’t in the same breath as Davis or Smoak but maybe a package of Craig, Anderson and Jones gets it done. The first two of those three come probably immediately start for the M’s.

It looks like the Mariners are looking almost exclusively for young promising hitters rather than pitchers, im not really sure who we have that is promising enough to trade for anyway. I remember reading that the Mariners would want Ike Davis from the Mets or Justin Smoak from the Rangers if any deal happened

On another note it looks like Carlos Matias has struck out 11 guys today and got the loss! Pretty awesome 9 innings 2 ER 11k

@azruavatar: Wallace signed on July 1st so he was not traded lass than one year after his signing date. I am almost positive it is the signing date and not the draft date as some players are not drafted so it is a rule that applies to NDFA's also.

@Andrew: Yes, we were incredibly fortunate to have Miller fall to us in the draft, just as we were lucky to have Cox drop this year. It's impossible to say whether or not the two compensation picks would atone for the loss of Miller until years after the draft. If the front office were to make this rumored trade they may do it without any intention to sign Lee for next season. The question would then be, is the addition of Cliff Lee, a first* round pick, and a first supplemental round pick worth Shelby Miller and ~$4.5 million. Using compensation picks to pad for the loss of prospects is a strategy Mo has used before, and I'm not so sure it's a bad one. It's a hell of a lot less costly and risky than signing top tier free agents. *Assuming Lee signs with a top 15 team in the offseason.
