Here’s just a quick reminder about why it is impossible to put too much stock in stats or even names of the players in the DSL and VSL. Last year’s DSL darling, slick fielding shortstop Grabriel Hernandez is not Grabriel Hernandez and was almost 3 years older than he said he was. Now Hernandez is using his real identity, Ronny Gil and is 20 years old. He’s on the restricted list in the DSL and we will need to check back with him next year. This is obviously not breaking news, as it has been at the TheCardinalNation.com and elsewhere, but just another cautionary tale to add to the pile of cautionary tales over there in the corner.

Additionally, the Cards signed Renyel Pinto to fill the role of lefthander out of the bullpen for Memphis after Rich Hill’s release. He does strike out almost a batter an inning for his career, but he walks almost 6 batters per 9 innings.

Memphis and Quad Cities are updated with their late night finishes.

Let’s rock.

Memphis 5, Albuquerque 14 (In Progress)

  • Memphis is in a late one at Albuquerque and say it with me: Park Adjustment. What they call “The Lab” is a launching pad. So, take these numbers and scale them down a bit mentally, or physically, or literally, whichever way works for you.
  • Lance Lynn gave up 7 runs in 3 innings.
  • Chuckie Fick relieved him and didn’t do much better.
  • New Memphis Redbird Eduardo Sanchez was the only pitcher to remain unscathed with a shutout inning.
  • Allen Craig had a 3 run HR.
  • Tyler Greene had a triple, a walk and two runs scored.

Springfield 1, Tulsa 4

Palm Beach 6, Charlotte 1

Quad Cities 7, Wisconsin Badgers 6 (14 innings)

  • Deryk Hooker started for the River Bandits going his piggyback approved 4 innings. He got 6 outs in the field (4 ground – 2 fly) and 6 outs via the strikeout. The other batters were not so good. He gave up 7 hits and 5 runs (4 earned).
  • Michael Blazek came in the 5th allowing 1 run over his 4 innings.
  • Jesse Simpson pitched another 4 shutout innings striking out 5 and walking 3.
  • Daniel Calhoun struck out the side for the win.
  • Aaron Terry got the save
  • Devin Goodwin had 3 hits.
  • Matt Adams had his 20th double of the season.
  • Robert Stock was 2-6 with 3 RBIs.
  • Niko Vasquez had the old golden sombrero in an 0-7 night.
  • Jason Stidham had a triple and 3 walks.

Batavia 11, Mahoning Valley 3

  • Justin Edwards went the first 4.2 innings with crazy 3s. 3 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts. He allowed 1 too many hits with 4.
  • LaCurtis Mayes pitched around 2 inherited runners and pitched 2.1 shutout innings.
  • David Kington took the win as Batavian bats broke out late in the game. He walked 1 in his inning.
  • Jose Rada struck out 2 in the 9th.
  • JRod Part Deux had two hits including a 2-run HR.
  • Alan Ahmady, Jon Edwards and Nick Longmire all had doubles.
  • Matt Valaika had two hits and a stolen base.

Johnson City 6, Bristol 4

  • Patrick “Brad” Daugherty pitched the first 4 innings allowing only 1 unearned run on 3 hits. He struck out 2 and walked none. He had a wild pitch.
  • Angel De Jesus – amazing – gave up 2 runs in 2.2 for the win.
  • 2010 draftee Bob Revesz got the hold with 1 unearned run in 1 inning. It will be very interesting how he pitches in short season as his college numbers were less than exciting.
  • VSL grads Francisco Guzman and Hector Corpas finished off the game with .2 of an inning each.
  • Hawaiian Greg Garcia was 3-3 with an RBI.
  • David Medina had a 3 run HR.
  • Travis Tartamella was 2-2 with 2 RBIs.
  • Colin Walsh had two walks.

Schneider once again showing he’s for real with another good start at Palm Beach.

  2. cariocacardinal says:

Anyone else on the “Lynn to Springfield” bandwagon with me? He clearly has some things he needs to work on and might do them better in a less challenging environment.

  3. cariocacardinal says:

Addition pitched in relief for Springfield. Time for him to try to become a Loogy out of the pen? With Broderick also pitching in relief last night I’d assume Mura comes off the DL and gets Additon’s rotation spot.

  4. cariocacardinal says:

QC with back to back 15 and 14 inning games! (won them both though) Those 7 AB nights (in this case 2 in a row) can really mess with your averages if you are wither on a hot or cold streak.

Dan Calhoun was forced to pitch 3 straight days. Ouch!

  5. cariocacardinal says:

While I’d rather Gil be Hernandez and 18 and not 20 y.o. I am not totally disillusioned with him as a prospect. Even at 20 y.o a slick fielding SS (he was signed mostly based on his glove) who OPS’s .840 in the DSL in his first year is someone to watch. In this case the age thing would seem to reduce his perceived upside but at the same time it means he will probably have the mental and physical maturity to move faster through the system.

  6. Tackle Box says:

When can we realistically expect to hear anything about Matias?

  7. Andrew says:

@cariocacardinal: He has been real hot and cold at Memphis, either very good or very bad. That said the park he played at last night is a combination of Coors Field without the Humidor and the winds of Old Candlestick. That part routinely has 35 MPH winds blowing out.

Tackle- When you say hear anything about what do you mean? Luhnow said they are confident that he will be certified and in the US by July.

  8. Andrew says:

@cariocacardinal: While I partially agree there is something to be said about his offense being a result of literally being a man among boys. If he can put up that type of offense against guys his age then yes he is legit. Or is this the case of a Senior in high school dominating a freshman simply because he’s more mature physically.

  9. cariocacardinal says:

In retrospect it appears the Additon pen appearance might just be because his turn would have come up during the TL All Star break

  10. Andrew says:

Wondering about a timetable on Gorgens return, he was having an outstanding year.

  11. jjray says:

Does this mean Gil nee Hernandez will not be able to play even in the VSL this year as a penalty for lying? Is that the penalty imposed when the latin players get caught playing the birth certification game?

  12. Andrew says:

Gil is on the restricted list. He can practice and train with the team but he can’t play for 1 full year. Yes I believe thats the penality is being put on the restircted list and not being allowed to sign for 1 year.

  13. cariocacardinal says:

@jjray: Not positve Gil is suspended from the VSL as well ( I believe so) but he is passing the year in the Cardinal’s EST camp.

  14. Andrew says:

He’s on the restricted list and cant play. He can practice and train with the team though.

  15. Jeff Roman says:

Also Carlos Matias pitched again for the DSL Cardinals – 8.0ip 4 hits 2 runs 2 walks 11 strikeouts 1 HR allowed

  16. Vision says:

I think Matias game was the conclusion of a rain shortened game beforehand where he pitched 3 innings and had 6 K’s. I don’t believe he threw all 8 innings last night.

  17. pitch and hit says:

    @cariocacardinal:

I think that you were right, the guys may just be getting their work in due to the break. Never assume anything though, because most, including the players have no clue day to day what changes may occur. Diapoules (sp) has been returned to PB so there is a possibilty of a new starter (or an old one) after the break. Changes for pitchers come from the rotation schedule. My understading Kopp and Fick will remain until Ott returns, if he does. Or that could change in a day. In the meantime seems to me they know how to pitch, that’s why they are there, they just need to figure out the adjustments.

As long as Lynn doesn’t feel frustrated IMO, he’s ok, one has to get used to the time changes, the different type of travel, the park factors, the different climates to move forward. That essentially is what AAA is about. He wouldn’t be there if they thought he wasn’t ML material. He can work on what he has to there. But then again, one never knows what will happen…tomorrow or the next day.

  18. Tackle Box says:

    @azruavatar:

Why does this process take so long? If MLB knew he was lying the last time, then they probably had proof and knew who he actually was.

I guess I figure this time around should be much quicker but I guess no one’s in any particular hurry.

  19. cariocacardinal says:

@Tackle Box: He (as well as Gil) was caught during the visa process. It may have been the embassy that flagged them and it is probably the embassy that is holding up Matias at this time.

  20. Tackle Box says:

    @cariocacardinal:

Oh, I see. Well, that makes sense. The government moves at a snails pace (unless they want your ass), so this should take forever.

  21. Andrew says:

Gotta say once again less than 2 weeks ago Luhnow said that while Matias wasnt certifed yet they were confident he would be and that he would be in the US by July. I asked the person if in the US meant here to get his bonus or to go to short season and he said both.

  22. HL says:

Longmire picked up another XBH. Dude stays hot.

  23. Andrew says:

Think its possible that the guy had very poor instruction at U of Pacific and the coaching staff at Batavia picked up on something and helped him correct it?

  24. cariocacardinal says:

@Andrew: possible, but batting adjustments usually take longer for a player to fully adopt and make a large, long term difference. Pitching adjustments such as arm angle, delivery and release points seem to be thins that can make huge diffrences quickly.
