US Open weekend starts today (yay! early weekends). I think there is something else happening this weekend too but I’m sure I’ll remember it eventually.

On to the DFR!

The Cardinals have signed 34 players according to Baseball America. The scoreboard at Busch Stadium said 33 on Wednesday night when I was there.  None of the top 4 picks have signed. If you’d like give me your predictions in the thread — tell me if the player a) signs and b) how much (if applicable) and c) the day (if applicable).

1) Zach Cox

2) Seth Blair

3) Tyrell Jenkins

4) Jordan Swagerty

5) Austin Wilson

Baseball America has the signed draftees for the Cardinals. So, check out this link at Baseball America for the players in bold that the Cardinals have signed. Since it is Baseball America, they update it frequently.

To the DFR!

The system went 2-1 as Quad Cities was off today so CJ Beatty could get his toes done.

Don’t forget, Batavia starts Friday, so you are nearing the end of the regular DFRs and get ready for the DFR XL starting then.  For now, you will have to get the middle version. Ole!

A few non-baseball notes as I recover from my 4-hour drive:

  • The A-Team is a wonderfully fun movie. It shows admirable restraint — for an action movie — throughout most of the film with the exception of 2 scenes. If you’re willing to forgive a flying tank and a rocket launcher into a cargo ship, this movie is loads of fun.
  • I say this as an apolitical statement: The Recovery and Reinvestment Act (aka The Stimulus Bill) is terribly inconvenient to my summer road trips as well as my daily commute.
  • Google Maps tells me that the STL to Quad Cities trip time should be about 4 hours and 45 minutes. Based on my empirical data, it is approximately a 4 hour drive.
  • There are a lot of cops that monitor Interstate 55 in Illinois.
  • Children that sit behind me at baseball stadiums inevitably paw at my back after getting food on their hands.
  • One of my favorite parts of a baseball road trip is running in an unfamiliar town. It’s incredibly freeing to just go outside with no idea where you’re headed and just run.
  • Quad Cities has humidity similar to St. Louis. It is stifling.

Now that I’m back at home base, there’s still a lot of material to cover for Future Redbirds this week. I’ll be recounting what I saw at Quad Cities and taking a look at the third day of the draft in detail.  But for the moment, I owe you a Daily Farm Report.

A beautiful night last night in the Quad Cities as the rains came and cooled off the town for the night game.  It’s interesting to write these reports up the day after being at the game — namely because I’m not entirely sure I could tell you the score once I leave the game.  I can tell you about individual plays (I have about 9 pages of notes in my little black notebook from the first two games) and I can tell you about players but when I’m there, I don’t follow the narrative of the game.  It’s a decidedly different experience from the emotional ups and downs of watching the Cardinals play.

The org goes 3-for-3 as High-A enjoys their All-Star Game and Quad Cities eeks out an extra inning win.

(FWIW, there’s a good chance I’ve seen all the QC baseball I’m going to see this weekend. The forecast for this evening looks decidedly wet.)

All stats are schedule and park adjusted and come courtesy of College Splits

Earlier in the week I posted some of these advanced stats for the picks taken on day one and two of the draft, now here’s day three, plus I added in a few new stats – walk-to-strikeout ratio, batting average of balls in play and speed score. Read the rest of this entry »
