Batavia impressions are pushed back until tomorrow as I’m having trouble uploading the video.
Those who had trouble accessing the site yesterday, the issues have been resolved.

Why the change to GL? Did i miss this explanation?
Boooooooone….Whats his story?
oh, and where is roberto de la cruz….is he playing at all?
I believe Boone’s story is that he is a big man, with an eye like an eagle and as tall as a mountain is he. He is brave, he is fearless and as tough as a mighty oak tree. From the coonskin cap on the top of his head, to the heel of his rawhide shoe; he is the rippin’est, roarin’est, fightin’est man the frontier has ever known. Oh, and he fought for America, to make all Americans free.
What a Boone, what a do-er, what a dream come-er true-er is he!
….Or so I’m told.
I am just curious, what makes in your opinions a bad outing? How much do you all read about what actually took place in every game, or is it just based on stats that day?
Does anyone realize PJ came out from a bad finger?
Does anyone realize that Lynn in some cases is facing guys 10-12 years older than him, maybe it’s just that they have more experience? The other day the hitters in Memphis faced a pitcher who did his AA in 1999! A career minor leaguer! Or sometimes the young guys face rehabbing major leaguers. This all plays a big part in the game.
Is perfection expected every game, every at bat, ever inning pitched? What about other factors, the weather, the park, the other team the other pitcher? Was the player brought up to early, was he prepared for who he had to face? Did they have to face more lefties than righties (for pitchers and hitters). Did he come from the cooler more friendly weather to hot high humidity? Is he coming from hot humid weather to cooler drier weather? How about the sun factor between night and day games. That really affects your game and for many this is part of their adjustment and it takes along time. And that is if you noticed part of their stats.
If you speak to many pitchers, they will tell you that some of their best games happen when their best pitches weren’t working, or sometimes have bad games when their best stuff is. If you speak to both pitchers, hitters, sometimes the umpire just plane bad at his calls that night. Maybe the hitter needs a night off? Maybe too many errors. Travel 4-5 hours in a bus same day as the game. Maybe everyone on the team did awesome but lost, the baseball gods are not going to work in your favor every game.
A few weeks back Springfield had a game where the stupid umpire was giving no calls on either side of the plate, pitchers (both teams) had to throw down the middle, which ended in a high scoring long and drawn out game. The pitchers had a bad game and everyone else had a good game. Doesn’t anyone take that into consideration? How about when NL pitchers have to hit? You don’t think that wears them down?
How about that this is really much harder to play each and every day and easier for us to be critical (myself included). Yeah they are getting paid to do it, not much though for the hours they put in. They don’t get paid for overtime, do you?
I appreciate the DFR’s but I find that sometimes there are judgements made on players outings without knowing full facts (as in the case of PJ being taken out last night).
@pitch and hit: do you want to pay for someone on this site to go to every game so you can get a full detailed recap? if so, i’ll apply for the job.
@pitch ant hit
I think the bottom line is regardless of the situation a pitcher is supposed to get the batter out. There are always going to be bad umps, bad weather, better players, worse players, and so on. The end game is the result, not the situation that caused the result. I’ll give you mid game injuries, but all of the rest of your examples are…well they are just part of the game.
/gets off soap box
@pitch and hit: Lynn might be facing older players but he still pitching poorly. Are we supposed to take solace in his mediocrity?
@pitch and hit: So your defense for a AAA/ AA pitcher is based on the fact that they are facing life-long AAAA journey men, MLB rehabbers, weather, ballparks, and the umpires? well welcome to baseball my friend because some of those factors and more, are a part of the MLB world also. I believe that much of the criticism that our prospects get on this site is most often fair, as a AAA pitcher who can’t get it done against AAAA “experienced” minor-league, mid-30′s journeymen and unhealthy, rusty MLB’ers is never going to get it done in the majors or has some work to do to get to that point. Do they need to be perfect?- no, but they do need to show some dominance at the minor league level in order to make it to the bigs and to make an impact. Numbers are numbers, and yes there may be occasions when the whole story is not known or told, but you’re being a bit critical of those who do the work for FR. This isn’t a full time gig for all these guys, but a side job that they do.
@pitch and hit: I understand your frustration. It’s important to remember that we’re sifting through 6 games a night and trying to bring the highlights. If you don’t like the adjectives or judgments being made, then go look at the boxscores yourself. I say that without any vitriol.
Now, I think the points you make regarding performance are 90% bogus. So PJ got injured. Does that make it OK that he only lasted 5 innings? As if the innings afterward would be perfect? Lynn facing guys older than him is a poor assessment of why he’s struggling. These aren’t talented hitters who are being held down in the minors for some mysterious reason. They’re in AAA because they aren’t good enough to be in the majors. If you can’t retire hitters of that caliber how can you retire better ones?
The excuses you list (and let’s be honest, they’re excuses — if my performance at work suffers because of temperature, I don’t get excused for my poor performance, I get fired) are things that every major league player has faced and had to overcome. If these minor leaguers can’t, then they aren’t going to get to the bigs.
I’m doing my best to be polite here but I don’t take kindly to the idea that we’re out to blast players when they don’t have a good night. Hardcore Legend, Jeff and myself all offer very even handed criticism and praise in the DFRs. You can quibble over adjectives but none of us has an axe to grind. The flip side is that we also don’t lavish unwarranted praise or excuse every poor performance out of hand, which is what you appear to do. Consider this: If we’re unjustly criticizing some of these players when they perform better than the results, aren’t we just as likely to be praising them when they perform worse than the results? So long as we’re consistent, it’s likely these things average out in the long run.
The last thing I’ll mention is that I get the impression that you (and others here) are unaccustomed to what a real blue chip pitching prospect looks like. Take some time to look at top pitching prospects from other organizations. Pitching is notoriously difficult to project (due, in part, to injuries) but the Cardinals simply do not have a dominant starter in the upper level of their organization right now. I’d argue that they haven’t had one since pre-injury Anthony Reyes. The pitching prospects they do have are mid-rotation guys as a ceiling. They’re going to have outings that it is ok to be critical of. They’re going to have outings that it is ok to be positive about. We’re here to do both, the best we can, on a daily basis.
I think what pitch and hit is trying to say is sometimes the boxscore don’t tell the real story. As far as PJ last night he wasn’t struggling he was really pitching well, one mistake but he took a pitch off his hand while sac bunting in the 5th then went out in the 6th and walked the batter on 4 straight and they pulled him, onelly proceeded to walk everybody and gave up PJs other run pj was only at 80 pitches so he would have gone one more maybe two. The rest of the reasons pitch and hit gave are exactly excuses all that other stuff is part of the game. Get the job done or go home. But injuries are a complete different story
Roberto de la Cruz?
This is a free site and all the posters work for hard for very little reward. I, for one, appreciate what they do and the opinions they provide. If I didn’t the work and trust the opinions of this site, I would look elsewhere for info on Cardinal minor leaguers. I happen to think this is the best source around. (FWIW – I have no vested interest in the success or failure of this, or any other, website.)
Az, are you a scout that you can make assesments as to the future ML projection is regarding a 1,2,3,4,5 starter? No way. And actually what does it all matter what place they will find in the rotation?
Your future assesments and others here are based on what you as an individual think by a game or two you may have seen or reading a line doesn’t tell a whole story, that is my point. Why not just give the FDR stats? “Bad news” is that PJ had to come out, but did you know why he had to come out? Why don’t ya find out why he had to come out? Why not PJ had to come out in the 5th, unlike PJ, hope he’s doing ok.
Same with Kozma, how many times have you actually seen him play? The player is young, impatient needs lots of maturing to do, but I can tell you he has THE best approach when he gets into his count and beautiful swing of any player in our system. I have said that on many occassions but he’s off your bandwagon because he hasn’t made it as far as some of you think he should.
I’ll also said once and on many occassions why Lynn is struggling and why Ott has struggled, why Kopp struggles, why the high velo guys struggle, no one said anything. It’s because of what they have to do, they aren’t given the liberty to throw much breaking stuff, they are FB pitchers and they have to throw their FB 80-85% of the time at the highest velocity to learn where their comfort zone is for control, that changes each time you move up, did you know that? Do you know that many times some pitchers get out there they can only rely on 2 pitches at a times sometimes, did you know that too? Maybe you don’t know this too they got to do what they are told to do.
You might want to take the time to really find out what goes on in the milb, about instruction and about what players have to do each game (at certain levels) some here do understand these guys are still learning (even the AAA guys) to get where they want and they want (any organization)and if the organization didn’t think they had the potential they wouldn’t be there.
The point I was making was not excuses, but things that players have to over come, and you can have all the talent in the world but you need to overcome them. There are plenty of top prospects that are gushing with talent but they can’t overcome them and never move forward, that’s why the players are given “time” to adjust.
I am probably more accustomed to what a real blue chip pitching prospect looks like on other teams than you might know. And for what it’s worth, I have seen many a player in our system on many occassions, playing against the top prospects in milb and the truth is, they ain’t as bad as some of you make them out to be. The truth of the matter is, there are very very few really really top prospects in any system, the rest is all average to above average, but that does not mean in time as they mature they will become better players than they are today.
BTW, I have come back with info regarding circumstances of a game (by reading the recap) and no one seems to respond.
@pitch and hit: I’m not engaging in this tit-for-tat on the site. A public flogging (which you appear to be after) only results in a chaotic set of supporting and detracting comments. I’ve sent you an e-mail and we can continue this conversation if you’d like. I don’t ban people for having different opinions but you’re struggling to express yours in an appropriate way right now — if you want to lay into me via e-mail, that’s fine. I don’t, however, do public spats.
I wasn’t aware that “struggled a bit” is considered a harsh criticsm, especially since I followed it with a positive.
I wouldn’t say it was a great outing for a guy that is trying to pitch better than the charred remains of Jeff Suppan.
@pitch and hit
chill out its a website for fans of the cardinals, not for someone to trash everything that is put up.
you can go go to the ESPN chat rooms for that rubish.
Pitch and hit-Projects come from many different places mainly what other scouts have said and past performance and stuff. I on a few occasions have corrected an unflattering comment about a players performance or put it in the context of the trends of the player. Without extra stuff added in it is much better to just look at the box scores. I do admit that overall the guys doing the DFR do look at the trends and comment based on that.
I do understand that they work hard and do it for free, I do the same on another site, but I try real hard to look at it from both sides. I appreciate the reports, I was just asking about why the negative stuff sometimes, I remember when you guys ripped the heck out of Ottavino and sometimes Daley and you all have no clue what’s with him.
I notice some opinions of those that present the DR are highly regarded over others (even those that see players often) yet their opinions are overlooked. I appreciate the work but does that mean we have to agree with comments made? I just don’t undrstand, for example, Lynn is having a down year, who here has seen him pitch? Because he’s having a down year, to some he’s destined for the bull pen? He’s hurt? Maybe he is, then give him credit for sticking it out.
3upand3down, I am with you, I didn’t think he had a bad game either. There were circumstances why he came out early, not cause he was pitching bad.
If I offended anyone I apologize, I’ve stayed quiet but just seems a lot of negative comments come from misinformation.
Pintch and hit, what I’m taking away from this is either a) you want people to pay attention to what you say more or b) you don’t think we do a very good job on this fansite…which I know is the exact opposite of what people actually in the Cardinals organization have told us.
Either way, you’ve said what you’ve wanted to say. You’ve gotten all the apologies your going to get. Enough.
So, Roberto de la Cruz?
De la Cruz is in GCL and hit his first career home run the other day. He’s still struggling at the plate whicfh I guess is expected being only 18 now. On a side note Wagner Mateo is hitting .228 in the Dbacks system. Often times with international players they have all the talent in the world but the fact that they haven’t played competitively calls for an adjustment period to actual competition and adjustments with how they play. I’m not too worried about them jus thave to be patient with these type of players.
@Andrew: I think that was VolsnCards5 awkward segue away from the sniping. FWIW, no one was banned today and I think it’s all resolved — just a miscommunication.
Ahh, not very good reading between the internet response lines lol. Anyway now people who dont know about De La Cruz do. :)
I actually did want to know about De la cruz…i’ve asked a few times…but that last time i asked was a segue of sorts
