Yesterday was a good day for Evan MacLane. No matter what the outcome was of his appearance, what I’m sure was his childhood dream came true. Evan found himself in a big league park, on a big league mound, pitching to big league hitters.
Congratulations to Evan.
As for the Cardinals, I have to wonder sometimes two things. These are things that have irked me for at least the last 4 seasons. Do the Cardinals make conscious decisions to poorly handle their roster management and does the on-field staff EVER have any idea about what players do in the farm system? Perhaps one of LaRussa’s greatest failings this late in his career is that he seems incapable of understanding what to do with these farm hands he is given. That may be why he leans more towards acquiring veterans, a body of work that he has actually seen with his Transitions Lenses colored eyes.

I would have to agree with the congrats for Evan….I think that he has worked very hard this season and deserved to get a chance, but what I don’t understand is why these young players are thrown into such pressure packed situations on their first day up. The coach has done this nearly every time a young player is called up, and then if they don’t excel, they are sent back down. A young player(especially pitchers) needs to adjust a little to the new surroundings and be able to get their feet wet before being thrown into a critical game situation. I understand that if these young players do survive these situations, the coach thinks they are ready to handle anything, not withstanding the fact that many players who don’t excel during those occasions might lose a season’s build-up of confidence.
I don’t agree with the criticism of TLR in this particular case. He’d burned through the bullpen the previous night(mare), and SOMEBODY had to pitch the 9th — preferably somebody who had the endurance to go a couple more innings if the game went that way. Based simply on who was available and who was not, I don’t see a viable alternative to throwing MacLane into the pool whether he can swim or not. TLR’s real screwup happened the previous night, and it was simply the usual example of his overmanaging and burning through the bullpen unnecessarily (which he essentially admitted after the game) and not anything about a rookie-vs.-veteran hangup.
Tony didn’t want him in it was pretty obviously, unfortunately he burned through 4 pitchers in 2 innings and 2 weren’t available. Going into the 9th the only options to pitch the rest of the night were Maclane and Suppan.
SHELBY MILLER SIGHTING!! GET THE PAPER BAGS READY!!
His game with Quad Cities was postponed after 3 1/2 innings, but Shelby had thrown 3 HITLESS innings and recorded 7 K’S in just those 3 innings! I would have really loved to have seen him take the no-no as long as he could, because it sounded like he had his best stuff last night. Not to set you guys over the top, but I heard he was routinely touching 98 on the gun as well…
@jws003:
Looks like those couple of weeks off working on different things in bullpen sessions have paid off. He’s been sharp lately.
Congrats to Evan.
GL, I agree with all you have said. :)
Don’t feel too badly about not being able to figure it out, I don’t think that they can either!
tlr’s issue in part is just aging. the older people get the harder is to look forward, and the easier it is to look back. he also treats all his veteran spare parts the same, no matter how good or bad they are. who, besides tlr, thought it was a good idea to replace jay with winn the other night? he put his 2 cents on getting winn last winter, and now has to justify that to the FO. nothing against winn, he seems to be an earnest guy.
@BigRob:
I hope so man. I could use any kind of good news I can get about our pitchers right now…
