Why isn’t character one of the 5 tools? Can we make it the 6th tool? Those who have it, have it. Those who don’t, well…they’re their own version of a tool.

How successful can Zawacki be without striking anyone out?
Maybe Fick is a legitimate prospect?
Josh Kinney has been REALLY good the last 2+ months. His stats combined with some positive first hand reports makes me wonder why the team removed him from the 40 man roster and why he isn’t getting another look.
@cariocacardinal: I’m back on the Kinney bandwagon. His removal from the 40 appears premature. Perhaps a deal was in the works to add a player then it fell through. Whatever, Kinney could help the STL bullpen.
Hearne up to Springfield. He will work in the bullpen.
Henley out for the season. He is having Tommy John surgey.
@cariocacardinal: Zawacki has been getting lots of groundballs and so he is pitching to contact and going deep into games. He is still young with good stuff, the strikeouts will come I hope. It takes time for a pitcher to adjust to a level, especially a HS draftee. Fick has done nothing to hurt himself this year. Solid K rate, 4 to 1 K:BB ratio, less than a hit per inning, lots of groundballs. Anybody got a scouting report on this guy? Kinney has been solid all year, they should have given him a chance in the big leagues this year before taking him off the roster. Right now he is much closer to the big leagues than samuel or daryl jones.
FWIW, Shelby Miller is #5 on the BA prospect hot sheet for the week. They also rank him among the top 50 prospects at midseason (no surprise there).
@rich: Kinney may be closer to the bigs, but he was less likely to get picked up off waivers when being dropped off the 40 man roster. Someone would have snatched samuel or jones had they been the one dropped off the roster.
As for Kinney, I think the move to drop him was premature, as I feel the club was overly confident in the pen (as they should have been given their success). Hopefully Kinney can be used in a trade. His trade value may be low, but a contender with a need for a righty in their pen may value him as a piece in a larger deal.
As for Zawacki, he could still be useful without the k’s, especially with Duncan. Just look at Piniero last year. All the kid needs to be able to do is keep the ball low in the zone, locate his pitches, and get ground balls to be a contributor on a Duncan staff.
Houston Summers sounds like a name one might come across at a gentleman’s establishment.
Just on name alone, he’s my new favorite prospect.
For some reason, they are not sold on Kinney…. i don;t think they would have signed MacDougal if they thought Kinney could help them in St.Louis. Kinney has been unscored upon in hislast 10 appearances covering 11+ innings,
@bc:
I never thought about that but now that you mention it…
Zawacki hasn’t been a ground ball machine like Pineiro with only a 45% rate this year. Combine that with a K/9 of only slightly more than 3 and he seems to be doing it with smoke and mirrors. He’s young so it doesn’t mean he can’t improve
(Fick has jumped his K rates this year but he always had the GB rates) but as much as he seems to be doing well on the surface his peripherals dont give a lot of hope at this point.
Zackwaki is pitching for the first time in about a year and a half.
@Anderw: Actually he pitched the first half of last year at QC.
If Fick is a prospect, could Brandon Dickson make it to the Hall of Fame?
I thought he tore up his knee very early last year.
@cariocacardinal: How do his peripherals not give hope this year? Have you ever seen him pitch? Why the pessimism? I would expect it from azru but now you too?
@ rydeshelby,
Are you a writer/journalist, did you ever strap a jock on in your life. I wonder if you have ever actually played baseball ever. Now how does that make you feel when you read that about yourself. That’s just how the kids in our system when a punk like you write harmful things about a player. I pull for all the kids in the Cardinal system, regardless if they got a ton of money or they are a 1.000/senior sign.
@rich: No I haven’t seen him pitch but his peripherals are weak (K rate.K/BB ratio, FIP, GB rate) and worse than last year. What about his peripherals give you hope?
@Play Hardball: Ouch, Mrs. Fick. You are a tough lady.
Since when are these stats considered weak? Especially between AA and AAA?
k:bb ratio of 4/1
9.7 k’s/9
2.68 era
7.4 h/9
Over 2 GO/AO
Take away the outing in Albuquerque and the kid has given up 1 run in AAA. I’m no stat guru, or blogger extrodinaire but those look like pretty good numbers to me. Anybody else agree or disagree? I would think that being a cardinal fan that you would want kids in our system to succeed, and not just the names you read in baseball America.
@Rich: I think that Carioca’s full comment was about Zawacki — I don’t think he disagrees with you about Fick. You need to find a better way to express disagreement though; these personal attacks at me or others based on your (wrong) perception of whether we like prospects isn’t acceptable.
I share carioca’s concern over Zawacki who was drafted, in part, for his sinking fastball but has terrible peripherals this year including a declining groundball rate.
