A couple notes:

  1. I’m going to turn on threaded commenting again. I’m hopeful that I can just flick a switch and it will work but bear with me on this one. I hope it helps the comment sections flow better. (Update: The threaded comments are live. See how you like it and whether or not it’s better than the @reply format we had been using.)
  2. Best wishes to Adam Ottavino as he comes to a tough decision regarding surgery. Despite the fact that I’m blunt about my perception of prospects and their chances at success, I would like nothing more than for all of them to succeed. This is, frankly, a crappy situation for Ottavino and I hope it turns out as well as possible.
  3. If you follow me on twitter (@azruavatar) or you want to find some more prospect updates you’ll get some captions of interviews with Jeff Luhnow. Luhnow was on John Marecek’s Sunday morning show on 550AM KTRS discussing numerous prospects and unsigned draftees including Cox and Wilson.

On to the DFR.

Memphis 2, New Orleans 5

  • Joe Mather was 3-for-3 with a HR and a walk. Mather has an OPS just over .800 which isn’t terribly impressive but most of the failings are in the power department. It’s possible that this is related to the bajillion wrist surgeries he’s had so it’s encouraging that he’s still showing an astute batting eye. If the power re-emerges next year, there’s still a chance that he can be our own personal Jayson Werth.
  • Adron Chambers was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • A mixed outing for Brandon Dickson who suffered some bad defense during his 5 inning outing. He allowed 5 hits and 5 runs (3 earned) walking 2 and striking out 6.

Springfield 3, NW Arkansas 4

  • Daryl Jones was 0-for-4. The DJ Tools updates are sad at this point as he’s carrying around a Tommy Pham-esque .663 OPS.
  • Andrew Brown was 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
  • Ryan Kulik tossed 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 ER while walking 3.

Palm Beach 2, Brevard County 0

  • Palm Beach racked up 4 singles and 2 walks.
  • A stellar outing from Arquimedes Nieto who struck out 7 over 8.2 innings of work. He walked 2 and allowed 3 hits. Nieto’s seasonal line isn’t terribly impressive but in the last 2 outings he’s thrown 15.2 innings striking out 14 and walking just 3.
  • David Carpenter was called in to retire the last batter.

Quad Cities 8, Fort Wayne 10

Batavia 6, Jamestown 1

  • Colin Walsh was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Audry Perez was 1-for-4 with a walk and HR.
  • Pat Biserta was 2-for-4.
  • Zach Russell struck out 5 in 6 innings of work. He walked 1 and allowed 2 hits. After appearing in the GCL from 2007-2009 and making a mid-season jump to Johnson City last year, Russell has done well at Batavia in 2010. He’s struck out 27 batters in 26 innings allowing just 13 hits. That BABIP is unsustainable and the walk rate (12 walks in 26 innings) is high but the strikeouts are nice.
  • Jose Rada struck out 2 in an inning of work.

Johnson City 15, Kingsport 5

  • Patrick Elkins was 2-for-4.
  • Greg Garcia homered in his only at bat.
  • Oscar Taveras was 2-for-5. Jeff Luhnow seemed (genuinely) excited about Taveras as a prospect.
  • Philip Cerreto was 3-for-5 with a HR.
  • Chris Edmundson was 2-for-5.
  • Romulo Ruiz was 3-for-4 with a walk.
  • Roberto Reyes was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Juan Castillo was 3-for-5 with a HR.
  • Ryan Copeland pitched 3.2 innings allowing 4 hits (1 solo HR) and a walk. He struck out 7.
  • JC accumulated 19 hits including 3 HRs during the game.

any comments regarding Luhnow stating that JC has the most major league potential players? does that just mean there are more players there that haven’t had their weaknesses exposed at higher levels?

    • azruavatar says:

If Luhnow thinks there are more major leaguers at JC than any other level, I’m calling bogus on that. The attrition rates from rookie ball to AA are just too high. Now, I think his comment was brief and vague enough that it could be interpreted other ways but I don’t buy into JC having the most major league prospects.

      • Andrew says:

I don’t think he meant big league players but instead legit build league prospects obviously not everyone works out. I believe he named Audrey Perez, Roberto Ruiz, Cody Stanley, Hector Corpas and Oscar Taveras. He seems to be very high on all of them especially Taveras and Perez.

        • cariocacardinal says:

Perez is at Batavia. It is good to Ruiz swinging the bat well after his injuries. He is playing mostly 3B now. IT would be nice if he could return to the middle infield if his shoulder allows it.

  2. Andrew says:

Count me in Luhnows corner about excitement about Oscar Tavares

    • themop10 says:

I am really excited about his comments regarding Tavares, Audry Perez, and Matais. Sounds like this Latin America investment might start to really provide some talent for the big league club. That would surely keep the owner’s checkbook open for more future investment. I hope we get to see these guys make it to the big leagues.

  3. Andrew says:

    What were Luhnows comments?

  4. cariocacardinal says:

Here is the link to the audio of Luhnow’s comments.

    http://ktrs.com/talk/sportsnight/

KTRS streams live so If you want the best Cardinal insight it is worth tuning in on Sunday mornings. Luhnow or Vuckovich (farm director) are frequent guests. Also as Az stated above, he (Az) usually tweets the highlights of the shows so you can read them on his tweeter feed either in real time or after the fact.

  5. easy says:

@cariocacardinal: Thanks for the link. Lots of good information and some optimism about signing all of the remaining top draftees.

  6. Hungry Jack says:

I have always thought Mather reminded me a bit of Werth, mostly due to physical similarities. Hopefully Mather can be a late-bloomer and a productive bench player. That wrist injury really derailed him, unfortunately.

Too bad about Ottavino. Like Mather, I was starting to envision him as contributing to the big club after a slow start to his MiLB career. A torn labrum isn’t the kiss of death that a rotator cuff tear is, but it’s a significant injury. I wish him the best.

    • BigJawnMize says:

It is really too bad for Ottavino. SLAP injuries are very hard to diagnose. If they can actually find it on a MRI he has a decent one and will definitely need sugery.

  7. Andrew says:

Also good to know that they think Matias is a formality.

  8. Ryan says:

The threaded comments are much better, IMO.

  9. GDM says:

haven’t we been waiting for Bombs to be our own JW for 5 years now? i know he can’t help the injuries, but isn’t it about time we let that dream go? and i say this as a huge Bombs fan, i’m just not convinced anymore he’s ever going to be our JW

  10. Pierce says:

Daryl Jones is really starting to fall out of any prospect conversations. I’d be interested in seeing what scouts or a guy like Keith Law (who was once high on him) say about him. I’ve only seen him once this season in person, so I’m in no position to judge how he’s regressed.

  11. Lou Schuler says:

JC leads the Appy League in almost every offensive category after 26 games — runs, hits, total bases, walks, BA, OBP, SLG. And they have the second-fewest strikeouts. I can’t remember a JC team ever dominating like this, even if it’s just half the season. At first I thought it was because they were using college players, most of whom in past years would’ve started in the NY-P. But maybe the age-appropriate players are better, too.

  12. Dan in Haiti says:

looking at the stat’s from the DSL, there is a Bryan Martinez, who is posting similar numbers to Matias. In the VSL, Diemer Bier is also posting good stat’s. does anyone know about these two pitchers?

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

At the Scout.com site they indicated that Martinez is a strong candidate for promotion to the State (Gulf Coast League probably) because the Cards like to promote a couple of their best players from the Dominican, presumably as an incentive, each year. They suggested Martinez and Matias as soon as he gets a visa.

    • BigJawnMize says:

Yeah I just got back from the Dominican and got to visit the Yankees site east of Santa Domingo. People need to realize that these teams are about the equivilaent of good showcase teams. Meaning that there are a one or two future major leaguers on the team but mostly these teams are filled out with kids that might play some level of college ball if they were in the states. Better than scouting High Schoolers but not by much.

  13. VolsnCards5 says:

    yay threaded comments

  14. Zach says:

Can anyone give me a scouting report on Ramon Delgado? He’s been terrific this season and I literally know nothing about him. Seems like a promotion should be in his future shortly
