We’ve got 13 games to cover. I have no clever intro when it’s midnight and I have 13 games to cover. Away we go.

Memphis 2, Oklahoma City 1

  • Allen Craig was 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Mark Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • An excellent outing for Brandon Dickson. He went 6.1 innings allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks. Dickson struck out 8. Dickson’s strikeout rate has increased every year since he joined a full season club.
  • Josh Kinney struck out 4 and allowed 1 hit in 1.2 innings.
  • Mike MacDougal got the win striking out the side in the 9th.

Memphis 4, Oklahoma City 2

  • Adron Chambers walked twice in 4 trips to the plate.
  • Allen Criag was 2-for-3 with a double. Nothing left to prove in AAA.
  • Joe Mather and Bryan Anderson both went 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Ryan Kulik allowed 1 hit and 4 walks in 3.2 innings. He struckout 2 and was tagged for 1 run.
  • Chuckie Fick allowed 1 ER on 1 hit and 2 walks. He struck out 1 in 2.2 innings.
  • Eduardo Sanchez allowed a hit while recording the last 2 outs of the game.

Memphis 7, Oklahoma City 6

  • Jim Rapoport was 2-for-5. Rapoport is a player in the mold of Shane Robinson though he has better all around tools. He’s an undersized outfielder with good speed and so-so power. He plays good defense but the bat is probably too weak to be more than a fourth outfielder.
  • Ruben Gotay walked once and homered in 5 PAs.
  • Allen Craig was 2-for-4 with a walk. NOTHING LEFT TO PROVE AT THIS LEVEL!
  • Aaron Luna was 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk. It was his first AAA homerun.
  • An uneven outing for Lance Lynn who struck out 8 batters in 5 innings but was burned for 6 runs on 8 hits and one walk. He allowed 4 of those runs by way of three homeruns.
  • Renyel Pinto struck out 4 and walked 1 in 3 innings.

Springfield 15, NW Arkansas 2

  • Jose Garcia was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.
  • Pete Kozma was 2-for-5 with a walk.
  • Steve Hill was 4-for-6 with 3 doubles.
  • Andrew Brown was 3-for-5 with a double and a HR.
  • Tony Cruz was 2-for-4 with a walk and a HR.
  • Chris Swauger was 3-for-5 with a double.
  • Scott McGregor pitched a complete 7 inning game allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 4. McGregor was generating a lot of ground balls in the game as well — 13 0f 17 outs in play.

Springfield 2, NW Arkansas 6

  • Matt Carpenter was 1-for-1 with a HR and a walk.
  • Chris Swauger walked all three times he was a the plate.
  • Arquimedes Nieto‘s first start in Springfield was a rough one. He allowed 3 HRs and 9 hits in 4.2 innings. Combined with 2 walks, he was tagged for 6 runs.

Springfield 5, NW Arkansas 2

  • Tommy Pham was 3-for-6 out of the leadoff position.
  • Steve Hill and Pete Kozma both went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Antonio DeJesus was 3-for-4 with a walk.
  • Trey Hearne went 7 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 4. He was touched up for a single run on a solo shot.
  • Riefer allowed 4 hits and 1 run in 1 inning of work.
  • Francisco Samuel picked up the save with a walk, hit and a strikeout.

Palm Beach 6, Tampa 5

  • Charles Cutler was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Alex Castellanos was 1-for-2 with a HR and a pair of walks.
  • Richard Racobaldo was 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Richard Castillo allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 5 in 5 innings. Castillo has been thoroughly mediocre this year with bad walk rates, low strike totals and the profile of a flyball picture.
  • Matt Frevert struck out 1 in 1 IP.

Palm Beach 6, Tampa 4

  • Charles Cutler was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.
  • Richard Racobaldo was 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
  • Ryde Rodriguez was 2-for-4.
  • Brett Zawacki was playing with fire allowing 12 hits in 6.2 innings. He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) while striking out 4 and walking 1.
  • David Carpenter picked up his 13th save of the season with a perfect inning.

Quad Cities 11, Dayton 3

  • Devin Shepard was 2-for-5 with a HR.
  • Alan Ahmady was 3-for-4 with a double and a HR. He also walked.
  • Matt Adams was 3-for-5.
  • Robert Stock was 2-for-5.
  • Jorge Rondon got the start allowing 9 hits in 7 innings for 3 runs (2 earned). He struck out 2 and walked 1. His stuff plays way better out of the pen. He’s likely just filling a role right now.
  • Chris Notti struck out 1 in 2 innings of work.

Quad Cities 8, Dayton 5

  • This game went an arduous 16 innings.
  • Ted Obregon went 4-for-8 with a walk.
  • Alan Ahmady was 2-for-6 with a double and 3 walks.
  • Devin Goodwin was 1-for-6 with 3 walks.
  • CJ Beatty was 2-for-7 with a HR and a walk.
  • Edgar Lara was 4-for-8 with a HR.
  • Quad Cities used 7 pitchers striking out 17 batters and walked 8.

Batavia 8, Williamsport 1

  • Nick Longmire was 3-for-4 with a HR. Can’t wait to see him live at some point. I have high expectations.
  • Audry Perez was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Victor Sanchez was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Justin Edwards had another strong outing striking out 7 in 7 innings. He allowed 7 hits and 1 unearned run.
  • Chris Corrigan struck out 2 in 2 perfect innings.
  • Keith Bulter pitched the last frame with 1 hit and a strikeout.

Johnson City 5, Danville 7

  • Virgil Hill was 2-for-4 with a HR. At 20, Hill is around the appropriate age for short season ball and he’s playing very well. He should be an exciting player to watch with above average speed and an excellent athletic pedigree.
  • Angel De Jesus struck out 4 in 5 innings of work. He was roughed up for 8 hits and 5 runs.

Johnson City 5, Danville 6

  1. Andrew says:

Any word yet if/we weekly VSL,DSL and GCL reports will be given? Few things to mention, Matt Carpenters power has really increased in the last few weeks, add to that the clutch factor. 2 walkoff homeruns in a 5 day span. Will be Memphis’s starting 3b next year. Hoping Allen Craig gets another shot in STL this September. If he can prove he doesn’t need at bats everyday he may very well replace Stavi as a pitch hitter. Craig seems to take better at bats than Stavi who I believe is living off of those 2 HR’s earlier in the year. Mark Hamilton should be getting some work in in RF so we can try to keep him in the organization. I have said before he is prime trade bait as he can flat out hit and is a DH/1b type but we cant get anything good for him if he is so undervalued. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the rest of the year and put up his usual good numbers. Francisco Samuels last few weeks have been promising. I also believe that Brett Zawacki should go back down to QC. Maybe starting at Palm Beach after almost a year injured is starting back at too high a level.

    • azruavatar says:

I’m not sure weekly VSL, DSL, GCL reports are tenable. Frankly, I wonder if they are counterproductive because of how questionable the competition level is there. We’ll get around to taking a look at them. Promise.

      • BigJawnMize says:

I was in the Dominican earlier in the month and got invited to see the Yankees acadamey. I have to say the talent left a lot to be desireed. I don’t think that the reports matter too much unless someone is doing suprisingly poor.

  2. Andrew says:

Maybe even if it isn’t weekly but sections on top prospects and scouting reports if you can find them? In my mind the Lower system has the alot better prospects then the upper system IMO. We have 4 guys in lower ball that have combined about 16-20 wins iwth only 1 loss. That cant all be just bad competition. Matias, Bier, Martinez and Avencedo. Names all site members should know.

  3. Lou Schuler says:

    Kind of on topic:

I agree with Andrew that we’re getting some good performances at the lowest levels of the system, and we probably have better prospects down there than we’ve had in the past. (Fun fact: Roberto de la Cruz pitched the final 2 innings of the GCL game yesterday, picking up a save. Earlier, as DH, he had a double and a homer. Each was his 4th of the season.)

What we don’t know is what these stats mean. We can find lots of guys — from Ankiel and Molina to Jones and Stock — whose Appy League numbers exceed anything they’ve done post-Appy League. And that’s a level above the GCL, and two levels above the DSL.

As Andrew points out, some of the pitchers in the DSL are putting up good numbers. The DSL seems to be a tough league for hitters, but that’s to be expected, given that you have teenagers playing on pretty big fields in hot, humid conditions. You just don’t expect the ball to carry there. Same with the GCL. The offensive numbers seem pretty low there, which means we have to look at pitching numbers with tempered enthusiasm. These kids may be terrific, but they’re probably getting some help from the environment.

Conversely, something about the Appalachian League, or playing home games in Johnson City, seems to inflate hitting stats, which promptly get deflated when these guys get to QC and PB. We all think Virgil Hill is an exciting young guy with a world of potential, and if Luhnow says that Oscar Taveras is a legit prospect, I’ll take his word for it. Still, I want to see what happens next year, when these guys get to full-season ball.

That said, a QC outfield of Longmire, Taveras, and Hill could be a lot of fun to watch in 2011.

  4. Dan in Haiti says:

in the 16 inning game for QC, Stock went 0-8. I know he is learning to hit again, but at what point will the “let’s have a try at pitching” talk come? the org is loaded with catchers at the lower levels. It seems his high end promise may be on the mound. With Audrey Perez and others, he will soon be bypassed it seems. also, is anyone getting boxscores on the lower level games, DSL, VSL, GCL? I look on the MiLB site and those boxscores aren’t avaialbe. Does anyone know of another site where they are? and on the international side, it seems like we have a good number of Latin prospects in the pipeline now who show real promise. It took awhile, but the team is finding young talent there. I wouldn’t be suprised if in 2 years, we have a to 10 prospect list with almost half Latin prospects.

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

Dan, I don’t know if for some reason you are blacked out because of your location, but I can get those boxscores all the way down through the DSL and VSL. You can also find them on the pay Scout.com site.

    • riotmute says:

I think it might be a little early to give up on Stock as a catcher but I haven’t seen him in person, I think that’s really important, especially defensively. He’s simply not hitting, though and that has to change. Like you said, we have a bunch of catchers that have more offensive talent. I’m specifically interested in Cody Stanley – he’s really hit well and was supposed to be pretty solid defensively when drafted

  5. PJ says:

Might Pinto be an option next year in place of Dennys Reyes?

  6. SoonerfanTU says:

I know this has nothing to do with prospects, per se, but I’m about done with the Skip Schumaker experiement at 2B. He has really regressed defensively this year, and you can tell that he isn’t a natural.

Given the need to cut costs where we can, I’d love to see us either trade Skip, or move him to RF in a platoon, and trade Luddy (next year of course). I’d also like to see us sign Lopez to a 2-3 year deal. That kid has been invaluable in his time in a STL uni. Not saying I want to pay a ton for him, but I’d give him 2-3 million a year if he’d take it. He is a ball player. Let him have 2B, and he can be the backup 3B in case Freese doesn’t pan out. Keep Ryan and Greene at SS and backup MI.

    • Shi says:

Agreed. One concern is the type of contract Floppy would ask for, but I’d be willing to go up to about $4M a year for 2 years. We would have enough of a bench for sure with Greene up the middle and Craig at third (both as backups). By next year, hopefully someone like Gotay will still be around as well. But the nice thing about Craig is he could be a fifth outfielder with Holliday, Rasmus, and Ludwick starting, and Jay as 4th. I can’t decide about trading Ludwick, but I prefer to keep him. I think we can find enough pitching on the FA market to not require trading him. We don’t need a frontline starter, now or next year.

  7. steve says:

    Re: Longmire

Was he nursing an injury last week? I went to the 7-22 game at Jamestown hoping to see him but Mike O’Neill was in center and Longmire never entered the game. Despite that, I was very impressed with O’Neill’s range. He looks a little undersized but he was flying covering a lot of ground. Outside of him, no one on Batavia really jumped out at me. Valaika looked shaky in the middle infield.

  8. jimofbeam says:

Is it just me, or are most of the regulars at Springfield ready for AAA? I know it’s a hitter’s league down there, but most of those chaps are rolling right along…even Kozma is getting into the act. And go Pham! (puff puff puff).

    • jjray says:

I was checking out Kozma’s stats for the last 10 games earlier today.
      http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=518902

He needs to be ready for AAA by the start of 2011. Hopefully he stays hot for the 2nd half of 2010.

    • pitch and hit says:

Actually, I don’t think there is much difference between good AA hitters and AAA hitters, except that the older guys have been around longer to figure things out . AA guys are not as patient, still learning and getting their at bats, that’s important.

I hope this isn’t a jinx but springfield is on a roll, everyone is picking it up, even Samuel. They seem to be working more together, if the young pitcher is struggling then the guys got to hit. It’s very hard when you have had so many changes in players going up and down, hopefully this will stick for awhile.

I like Eager’s .69 in 13, he has made significant improvement.

Gorgen is in rehab, perhaps you may have heard if all is well, he may begin throwing around the first which would bring him into mid august when ready.

Pinto is improving, took him a while to get into the groove, he was brought in for his MLB experience for post season.

  9. Ryan says:

Remind me what’s going on with Scott Gorgen. His elbow injury didn’t require surgery, correct? But he hasn’t pitched since mid-May and hasn’t had any rehab starts?

    • riotmute says:

I could be wrong but I remember Jeff Luhnow saying Gorgen was rehabbing in Jupiter and should be back around August 1st

  10. ROB G says:

When did Cards get Pinto. I’ve always liked him with Marlins. I also would like him over Reyes next year

  11. Jim H says:

for box scores throughout the Cards org

  12. cariocacardinal says:

Anyone no what’s up with Jones? I believe he was 5-10 on Thursday and Friday but didnt play in 3 games over the weekend. Has to be an injury or a discipline issue — neither would be good.

    • Andrew says:

Maybe pulling him as he will be a player involved in a trade.

      • cariocacardinal says:

Rarely if ever done until the trade is consumated. Once finalized they dont hesitate to pull players out in the middle of a game. So I doubt that a trade is the reason.

  13. cariocacardinal says:

Andrew Brown played some RF for Springfield over the weekend. Cruz even played a game at 3rd.

Jose Garcia is reminding me a lot of Placido Polanco for some reason.

  14. Dan in Haiti says:

BA is showing Tyler Lyons as having signed. I was not aware of that yet. bit by bit, step by step……

    • JC says:

Yep…it was announced yesterday that he signed. We are starting to see some slightly overslot signings announced as well. I would guess we will hear that Swagerty and Blair sign this week as I don’t think they will get much overslot. As for the rest of our guys it will be down to the wire (Wilson, Cox, Jenkins).

    • azruavatar says:

He signed late last week — thursday or friday.

  15. pitch and hit says:

Curt Smith on the DL, Scruggs up, Mulligan begins back in Pam Beach.

    • Tackle Box says:

Forgive me if my memory is failing me (I’ve been in Canada for a week and fell behind on the DFRs and forgot some more recent things), anyway, I was under the impression that Mulligan was starting to, at least a little bit, get things straightened out at Springfield?

Either way, I’m disappointed at his demotion. I think we’re all in agreement that while he may not be ready for AA (and I know that’s a topic for debate) but that high A is definitely below him.

      or did he get hurt?

Jeez. All I did was go to Canada for a week and I feel as though I’ve had a labotomy.

  16. pitch and hit says:

Mulligan has been out for a month with shoulder tightness, he begins his rehab in PB.
Chambers placed on the temp inactive list, Stavi rehabbing in Memphis and Castanza back to Memphis.

  17. pitch and hit says:

cazana sorry, always confused with his real name. :/

  18. Grant says:

Don’t know if this has been mentioned yet, but Anthony Ferrara was placed on the 60-Day DL. Has anyone heard anything regarding his injury?

  19. Dan in Haiti says:

checked scores tonight. ‘De La Cruz, the 3rd baseman from the DR they signed 2 years ago for a big bonus, was used again as a pitcher. he closed, 2 innings, no hits, 2 k’s. and his hitting is improving. maybe the perfect pitcher for Tony, even better than batting him 8th, he can hit cleanup!!!

    • Indiana Cardinal says:

I have read the write up of the game on the Scout.com site and they report the De La Cruz that pitched those two innings as LHP Manny De La Cruz whom the Cards drafted in 2009. I don’t think that the Cards would risk an arm injury to a prospect they value, although he hasn’t performed as they would like, like Roberto De La Cruz.

  20. Andrew says:

Why isn’t the comments section on in the newest report?

  21. Andrew says:

Seems to me have pretty good or intriguing talent at every level but VSL. VSL does have Brevilyn Valera and Jem Angel who is semi famous from his homerun competition at Tropicana field where Bryce Harper hit his 502 foot shot. I believe Bier is also at VSL. Aside from that not much in VSL.
