Jeff is still honeymooning, so you get the godfather. Take the DFR, leave the cannoli.
My internet has been going in and out for some reason. This is the second time I’ve typed this up. This time I will remember to save to Word. Thanks, Mediacom!
Springfield makes some roster moves. Scruggs is moving on up to Springfield, which seems deserved.
Rehab fight! Rich Harden struck out 10 in 6 innings. Kyle Lohse struck out 3 in 3 IP, and allowed a pair of hits.
Evan MacLane allowed 6 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings and escaped without giving up a run. He struck out 4.
Nick Stavinoha and James Rapoport both doubled.
Springfield was postponed. Palm Beach was off.
Shelby Miller went 7 innings (!) and gave up just three hits and struck out five.
CJ BEATTY!!! WENT 3 FOR 4 WITH DOUBLES. TWO DOUBLES. YE-AHH!!! (Twitter joke. I love CJ)
Luis Mateo and Devin Goodwin both had a couple of singles.
Alan Ahmady and Matt Adams both doubled.
Can I be real here? Not one Batavia pitcher that threw tonight is someone I care about, and I’m still annoyed I lost the first DFR. So I’m skipping the pitchers.
Bat Biserta hit a 3-run homer. He was the offense.
Greg Garcia and Cody Stanley, two spreadsheet approved draft picks, both had 2-for-5 nights.
Travis Tartamella and Cesar Valera both doubled. Valera had two errors on the night.
Can I be real again? I don’t care about the pitchers that threw tonight. Kevin Siegrist is a 42nd round pick from two years ago that is in the Appy League. He’s probably not very good.
BONUS DFR COVERAGE!
GCL Cardinals 19 (!), GCL Nats 8
Wow. Thassalottahitsanruns, mang. Roberto De La Cruz hit his 5th homer. With a .745 OPS in his second go of the GCL, he’s not as advanced as advertised, or at least just judging by the numbers. But he’s still very young.

Thank you for being real. And thank you for “Bat” Biserta.
I’ll be interested to see how Scruggs fares in AA.
Let’s also hope that Stavinoha’s rehab lasts until at least September.
Looks like they might be letting Miller go a little further into games. Very interesting stats since he was pulled out of the rotation to work on his mechanics and release point. Upon his return here is what his line looks like:
7 Outings:
30.2 IP
22 HA
7 BB
40 K
0.96 WHIP
That is pretty darn impressive and this is exactly why the FO is balking at any deal that involves Miller at this point.
which is also why i think they should do the same thing to Kelly (even though he’s older) since he was mainly used as an RP in college. just going by memory, it seems his stuff isn’t quite the same as it was early in the year (didn’t take the time to look at any stats)
When do you think Miller is ready for a promotion? I know its his first full season, but he’s been pitching well lately and if you take out the May 24th start his ERA is below 3.00. His strikeout/9 is impressive, and he seems to have found a groove. Too early for a promotion?
I say too early for sure. I give him another month in QC at least before thinking about moving him up. I do think at least 2-3 starts at a higher level before the year is over would be a good things for him to give him a taste of what he will face next year. I am more on the boat of conservative especially with pitchers.
Agree. He’s just now tasting real success. . .I’m in favor of him mastering this level and then giving him a cup of coffee in Palm Beach for a few starts. Then shutting him down.
Any more word on Austin Wilson? Zack Cox? Terrell Jenkins? I know all are likely to be deadline signings at best, but I’ve been wearing out Google looking for any shred of info about their intentions.
BA had a subscribers article up today that said that Cox negotiations won’t even start until pretty close to the deadline and Wilson’s situation is slowly going along but there has been constant communications from his camp and the Cards FO. If you didn’t see Wilson and his family were at Busch when we played the Phillies. He was in uniform and even took BP with the team. Basically a college like recruiting trip. But that is a positive sign that Wilson is keeping his options open and at least considering signing if the circumstances and money is right. I have heard nothing on Jenkins.
Yeah. . .knew about the Wilson recruiting trip and everything. Was just hoping there would be some good news following the visit.
Both Cox and a potential Wilson signings would be quite a bit over slot, and those deals don’t get approved until closer to the deadline, so don’t expect to hear much until a few weeks from now.
Update: Per STLToday chat going on as we speak it appears per Strauss that the Cards are close to signing 2 of the top 3 picks and specified Blair and Jenkins. Here is the questions and answer:
danandjonelle: I have been told that high school pitcher Tyrell Jenkins, one of our supplemental draft choices, was in St. Louis yesterday for a physical and I assume his signing is imminent. Since he is also a Baylor football/baseball recruit, do you think he will get more than slot money, which is $705,600.?
Joe Strauss: Jenkins would likely command more than slot. The Cardinals are believed close to signing two of their three high pitching picks, Seth Blair and Jenkins.
To be honest, I’d prefer him stay in Quad Cities until about a three or four weeks before the season is to end for Palm Beach so he can get about a half a dozen starts there. I’d prefer him to master that level, and not have an issue with rushing the guy up the ladder. Absolutely no reason to force him up.
Shelby outpitched Homer Bailey…
If you listen to Luhnow, Hector Corpas is a pitcher at JC you should care about.
Where do you listen to Lunhow? links?
Manny’s brother or close relative? Both from Panama City.
Curt Smith out for remainder of season, needs wrist surgery.
Cards are close to signing Seth Blair per mlbtraderumors
Well, I should say, per Derrick Goold
I would like to hear some word on Jenkins. I’m really high on him and I think we need him as a second large upside starter in our system.
Again, like any potential Cox or Wilson signing, Jenkins will likely be an overslot deal, thus we wouldn’t get word of an approved deal until very close to the deadline.
I understand that part but shouldn’t someone even be talking about him. Time to bring him to Busch.
Or maybe it’s because everyone believes a deal will get done. Remember, most overslot deals don’t get approved until very close to the deadline as it is anyways, and Jenkins figures to be overslot. And Jenkins isn’t that special.
How often do overslot deals not get approved?
The only one I can remember getting nixed is the Rangers and Matt Purke in 2009 draft. My understanding is the Rangers agreed to a $6M bonus and MLB rejected it because MLB were overseeing the Rangers finances and weren’t going to budge for that much overslot. I have not heard of another instance where MLB rejected a deal though…but I am sure there have been others. But to answer you question…it is extremely rare.
Almost never. In fact, to be honest, I’m not entirely sure the commissioner’s office actually has the ability to force a team not to sign a player, just to hassle them and be a pain in hindquarters if they do.
And I disagree with Karmaloop that Jenkins isn’t that special. I think he has a monster upside.
I disagree, he’s a great athlete with a very good arm who has alot of upside.
